  • When I first fought this boss, I thought it was an evil Casey Jones until his head flew off his shoulders.

  • Dat ass.

  • A Shogun does appear in the episode Combat Land in the original TV series.

  • His dieing scream sounds like a cow being slaughtered.

  • I love that weird scream when he dies.

  • When we were smaller we though he was carrying around a Hockey Stick. Then the name The Goalie came up and we called him that ever since.

  • I always had to continue at this level or this Boss.........EVERY FREAKING TIME I PLAYED!

  • Good old memories! thanks a lot lmphk for sharing :)

  • The Technodrome had machines to build hundreds of foot soldiers, when all they really needed was to build a few of these guys. Man, Krang was brainless not to realize this!

  • I love the music on this game, especially the boss theme. The thing I always hated about this level was those damn black-and-white tigers that jump out of the wall and run over you. If you time your A+B special attack just right, though...Well yeah, I'm sure you would know that if you're fighting the boss, lol. The thing about NES games, including this one, is that they seemed impossibly hard like 15 years ago, but now that I'm an adult, I can finally beat 'em...with hard work.

  • yeah i could never beat this bitch....lol i was so frustrated!!!

  • I remember. This is how far I got in the game.

  • i remember hating the head as well, but nowadays i think he's really easy. because the head moves in predictable circles. so the only secret is that you shouldn't kick shogun when you know you'll hit the head. 0:50 onwards shows this (but you were too impatient) other than that shogun NEVER hits you himself because he's so slow. and can stand very little damage. the one danger is if you do get hit by the head, then both head and guy will beat you up quickly

  • that was the last boss i was able to defeat as a kid, i want this game

  • do you remember the samurai panda figure? i thought he was that panda

  • i know they added this level and the frozen level to the nes version, but in the arcade version they never existed.... all i have to say is, the 4th level where you fight Tora is great, but the level here where you fight Shogun... blowssssss assssssssss

  • ...much like your comment, Palewhitehorseman?

  • Okay, I've said this before, but...

When you're battling a dude whose head can detach from its body, let alone fly around the room, you've got serious problems! *laughs*

  • This boss was cool but a royal pain in the ass because of that floating head of his but that head is actually pretty funny if you can keep it afloat when you beat Shogun as it seems to fall and burst into flame on the ground as Shogun explodes then falls on his knees(never did understand why his knees emerged intact while the rest of him exploded)

  • Sorry, his head doesn't burst into flame, but it does seem to deflate a bit.

  • This level was quite the headache. And the boss wasn't any better. Ahh memories......

  • I love the way the bosses of the last three levels let out these long moans before 'exploding'... How come so many of these villains explode?

  • You know, coming from a person who actually played TMNT first in the arcade (and had beaten it on his first time that he ever played the game with only $2 to boot, too), I actually find this fight even MORE difficult than the RockSteady and Bebop fight (which is replaced by an easier, though more annoying, fight with the fly form of Baxter Stockman in the NES/Famicom verions of the game) in the arcade version of TMNT.

  • I still get spooked at how this guy enters; he looks really menacing. And he is. Because of that misery-causing head, it is indeed almost impossible to get through this battle without losing at least one life, even with the pizza around. I do like his hockey stick attack though - I still imagine that's what his weapon is (come on, Casey Jones uses 'em!). What a surprising ending, too. One of that game's most inspiring moments, imo.

  • Actually, his weapon is a Japanese one called a "naginata". It's basically like a spear, but the point on the end is longer and curved.

  • TURTLE POWER!!

  • he was pain in the ass! very hard to kill:)

  • shogun was indeed tough

  • This game is ultra mega cool.

  • (Me neither.) When I was a kid this guy was kinda scary and I thought his naginata spear was a hockey stick, lol.

  • I never understood why they called the remaining lives you had "REST"

    what was up with that

  • A lot of Konami games had that, including Contra. My guess why they went with "REST" instead of "LIVES" in this game was that it might've been confusing since the life bar was called "LIFE". In Contra though, there was no life bar that you could confuse with the lives, except for the MSX2 version. I guess it was used in so many games that the players pretty much knew what the "REST" meant. The "REST" could also mean that it shows "the 'rest' of your lives".

  • @lmphk I know I'm replying to an old comment, but here goes. I'm pretty sure that the use of "REST" is a bad translation, 'Engrish' thing. Many Japanese games refer to lives using the word "nokori", which means "remaining", "left-over" or "the rest of". Therefore, "REST" does in fact refer to the "rest of your lives".

  • @lmphk Rest = Restarts

  • @EightFlew0ver rest=restores

  • @EightFlew0ver REST of your lives. They really should have changed it to Left as in 4 Left.

  • any of u guys wish they would bring back the old characters to teenage mutant ninja turtles?

And make it as threatening as they use to be in this day and age?

  • Every day.

  • That mufukkaz head used to bother me seriously. I remember finally beating him and taking a 2 hour break. I just left the game on pause since there was no way to save the game. :(

  • This is undeniably one of the toughest bosses in the game, because of the head. Krang from TMNT 3 kinda reminds me of this boss, since in that game, Krang splits his exosuit-thingy in half, with the upper body flying around trying to shoot laser or hit you with a hammer, while the legs gallop around and follow you to kick you when you're not looking. This and the Krang fight from TMNT 3 are two of the most difficult fights of the two beat 'em ups. All the other bosses were very tough as well.

  • im noticing this level and the frozen level aren't in the arcade aracde versoin up on here why not?

  • Huh? The arcade version didn't have these levels, the NES version had them because it was released as a port after the arcade game. Konami decided to add the two levels to the game when they released the NES port, the levels don't make much sense plot-wise, but it was a nice extra for the people who bought the NES version.

  • If Konami had made this level into the arcade version of the game, I could have easily seen Shogun deliver more attacks than him just swinging his naginata and letting his head fly off. He could have used shuriken and hopped around like Rolento from the Final Fight games with bombs and knives and if he were paired with Chrome Dome (a TMNT bad guy that looks somewhat similar to Shogun but then he was reprogrammed into being a good guy), then that would be a totally beastly dual boss battle.

  • Oh, and by the way, in the arcade version, he could have more hits and when you defeat him and Chrome Dome, their bottom halves will not explode until a random Turtle hits them with a drop kick and then the door will open and Shredder will announce something like "Prepare to enter your doom, you meddlesome Turtles!"

  • Cool video, i liked this game, more than TMNT 3

  • Yeah, even on 2 players the head was a bitch. I couldn't abuse flying kicks and had to work out an actual variety that I wasn't used to. Plus he had pretty decent mid range and attack speed thats hard to evade.

  • a true gem!

  • it seems there is no way to not lose a life on this boss, even with the pizza. I guess there's a reason why he doesn't take many hits like Granitor or General Traag.

  • According to the game's manual, he's called Shogun. And yes, that head is vexing.

  • Okay, I'll name him Shogun then, thanks for commenting, watching and telling me the name.
