What I really like about the Kinks (except of course the tremendous music) is how contemporary their lyrics are...you get the feeling that songs like "Skin and Bone", "A Gallon of Gas", "Low Budget", "Plastic Man" and of course "Brainwashed" were written in 2011...
I wouldn't call anything The Beatles, Dylan, or Brian Wilson did "effortless". In fact, making Pet Sounds pretty much destroyed Brian Wilson for years.... he's still a casualty, in my opinion. I think the Stones unfairly don't get the same accolades as the others for their songwriting.... they wrote alot of great songs. Especially, the songs during the Brian Jones period.
I was talking to somebody on here who was asking why the Rolling Stones don't command the same respect as Brian Wilson,Beatles,Dylan etc.. and I said it's because for the Stones it was not effortless.Mick and Keith put extra effort into the songs that would be singles but their album songs are often crap.So the Stones aren't invited to the 'genius party'.The Kinks most certainly are though.
@PeasGraveny So you think Pet Sounds was "effortless" to create for Brian Wilson ? If you re just interested by Stones singles, your opinion about them is irrevelant. Like knowing the Kinks just for Sunny afternoon, You really got me and Lola.
anyway... I love the Kinks, love this album, love this song !
@deaconbluesful Of course Brian put a lot of hard work into Pet Sounds but the things about his compositions that people find original and inventive seem to just come to Brian easily. Also I have every Stones track and the fact is the Stones fell back on substandard songs to pad out their LPs etc because their stockpile of 'grade A' material was a lot smaller than the people I originally listed. Finally my opinion is ''irrevelant'' is it?I could say much the same about your opinion. But I won't.
I love the "Village Green Preservation Society" as much as the next guy, but this album, to me, has so much more bite. Not that it's necessarily better, but so scathing...and accurate!!!
Record reviewer George Starostin says that this song alone made all the punk rock that was to come unnecessary. That may be a bit hyperbolic, but I agree with the spirit of that statement!
@PicnicHikeMusic Outside the fact that Village Green is just better - VGPS is an idealised version of an England that may never have existed while Arthur is a sharp dose of reality, don't you think?
sounds like a 70s tv show theme song transitioning to an alternative/metal/way before its time rock riff...then i read the lyrics and it blew my sox off!! pure gold. wish it were twice as long...it makes me sad when i see the view count of these amazing KinKs cuts...then see a no talent ass-clown like leon russel getting hundreds of thousands of views. the only thing that amazes me more than the kinks is how unknown most of their brilliance is...
"They" want you to Listen to Foo Fighters, Green Day, and Ga ga,......but I listen to KINKS !!!!!

I think 'Sleepwalker's really ace. Their last blast, along with 'Muswell Hillbillies'.

For me it just doesn't compare to "Village Green" album - the true highpoint.

Yeah, you're conditioned to be
What they want you to be
And be happy to be where you are
As relevant today as ever.
