I think that the game's actually well balanced, insomuch as there are no overpowering characters in the main cast - as far as the bosses and bonus characters are concerned, well, they're hidden for a reason.

It's only been emulated for a year or two though, so most copies are still a bit buggy.

Its mainly that the sound emulation isn't completed yet. The music seems to play fine but the voices and sound effects keep looping during the game.
