  • This is a very good to use solar enrgy in my country who I can get apower for water pump 20 kw are there any stirling engine in this capacety. pls advice

  • interesting video and very informative

  • can you hook up a gen and see how much amps it generates?

  • excellent idea...i hope these inventions get furnished and done so that we can make use of it and at the same time conserve energy... we have to conserve energy, now that were already feeling the effects of global warming...

  • Great idea since the radiant energy from the sun only heats the area it hits anyway- no issues of hydrocarbon except the energy burned to build the machine. How big would this piston driven stirling need to be to generate say 500 kw ( or around 670 BHP ) of electric energy ???

  • how is the FRESNEL lens compared to the parabolic mirror if they are both the same size which one would concentrate more sunlight into a given point

  • @baselb80 The same energy is concentrated in both cases.

  • if i can prove it, i have people with bucks big bucks that will back it\

  • come on show me a stirling engine that turns a generator that produces power that is useable and and some point otherwise why are you here

theory is why i am here i can do that too

  • what is causing the piston to move up and down

  • the power of the sun in the palm of my hand

  • Cool video....u rocks man

  • dude you can shut the sun off? cool!!!!!!

  • way too small and way under powered.... and we need silent ones as possible.

now we need power to run a freezer and air conditioner for say 2 BILLION HOMES!

    and MORE!

so I think it be wise to try to setup such things where the lens does not move "much", and power is created on scales we can use!

Most of the need of power on the planet goes to heat or COOL homes and devices. free heat to make cold is a valuable thing!

  • @Peterwhitlock see, a stirling produces either hot or cold air, depending on the direction the wheel goes. so it would be possible to cool down a freezer while producing energy. dont ask me why we are stupid enough to do it the other way round.

  • @pilzvergifter

and with Billions wanting to cool a room or house we can't anyone to build larger than toys! I am confused why they do not go large scale or safe scale, and have permanent unit that works only if light hits, it and goes off if you cover it. Just basics is all we wnat but toys is all we get as examples! I want larger scale! LOL

  • Watch your electric meter go backwards after installing your wind turbine and solar array! Net Metering will help reduce your bill. Solar only works 8 hours a day. Wind is operable 24 hours a day. Go to to sovdepot dot com We have all your inverters, charge controllers, wind turbine, and solar array needs.

  • with sunlight it can be free 150Liters of hot water everyday with thermal solar panels and very cheap to set up

  • So you could theoretically, set up several Stirling engines and move between them with one mirror/lens? Interesting. I'd never head of a Stirling engine before, I wish I had. Going to watch some more vids and do some more research, but this looks very interesting indeed.

  • Hey injected a nos in that cylinder

  • can you show us if that can turn a small generator to generate some electricity to charge a 12 volt battery?

  • What if you used a long pipe, with a cap at one end & a cylinder/piston at the other & put that pipe in a parabolic trough? Would the extra, heated air volume produce more power?

What if you set up several nozzles down the pipe to inject water mist directly into the hot pipe on the piston's back stroke?

  • What would happen if you injected a small shot of water mist directly into the heat chamber through a small nozzle tapped into the side of the chamber? Flash steam?

Wouldn't flash steam create more pressure? Wouldn't more pressure give more horse power?

  • good in theory but it doesnt hold a candle to magnetic motors and nuclear fusion

  • what would happen if you put a dildo at the end of it????

  • hit it with a blow torch

  • What is the bottom line? Given the area of the fresnel lens.....can you generate more watts from it using a mechanical to electrical system vs the most efficient solar cell? Then there is the cost...Can you get more watts per dollar than an efficient solar cell than you can using a sterling or steam driven generator?

  • do you ever have to change the fuel or gas in the STIRLING ENGINE?

  • @JacobH420 The working fluid is just hot air inside the cylinder of the piston assembly. The fresnel lens concentrates solar energy on a focal point on the aluminum cylinder encased with the metal casing. Once the initial rotation is applied on the fly wheel. The piston compresses the hot air and then the whole reciprocating piston motion starts. So to answer your question it doesn't need a air fuel mixture. Just air is fine.

  • If to a flywheel to attach the refrigerating compressor then it will be possible to raise EFFICIENCY strongly. The evaporator on a cold part, and the condenser on the hot.

  • Please watch:

    SUPER-EFFICIENT ENGINE Newest Design

  • @AndryhaCh A small trickle of water onto linen around the cold end of the cylinder would provide evaporative cooling without the need to compress the freon in a vapour cycle system. Solar power meets water power!

  • ahha! just pulled a huge Fresnel out of a projection tv in the alley. Yay.

  • Next evening, got another. They aren't as nice as new ones, one is a bit yellowed. I'm wondering if that "3m headlight restore" product would work. "Four step process that restores the clarity of yellowed, hazed, or dull headlight lenses."

  • I think the Fresnel lens is the real star of this show. Could that type of lens have photovoltaic or steam turbine applications?

  • Please watch:

    SUPER-EFFICIENT ENGINE Newest Design

  • what does it power?

  • YAY! THEY FINNALY CAN EVOLVE THIS TO MAKE A SOLAR POWERED SEX MACHINE!

  • Is it possible to just modify the flywheel to where you can set up a magneto from a small engine(i.e. lawnmower, etc.) to produce electricity? Might take away a bit of the drag you get from attaching a generator to it.

  • There's no much new about these engines...they've been around for over 150 years.

  • very cool idea to support us this way, thanks!

how much power can you get out of this?

  • Anything I type here is tweeted - how convenient

  • The function of the displacer is to transfer the air from the hot space to the cold space. This sets up internal pressure cycle variations, which in turn drives the power piston in and out. A mechanical linkage links the power piston to the displacer and drives it at 90 degrees phase advance. Neat little solar engine - with a water cooled cold space and a glass jar (greenhouse) around the hotspace - it would really run well.

  • i actually thougt that something would happend 3 min of my life wasted :(

  • Don't show this to the GOP (Giant Oil Party), they'll crap their pants.

  • whats this engine's rpm?

  • wow thats awesome, im planning on building one of my own as part of a project to generate electricy, you know using alternative energy sources, how can i build one???

  • I have a natural gas boiler and radiant heat system but it still needs an electric pump to circulate the water. Is there a way to utilize something like this to run without electricity?

    Thanks!

  • Wow, that's really cool!! If hooked up to a generator, do you happen to know if this would be a more efficient way to generate electricity using solar power than, say, solar cells? Just curious if you could get more power output from the same patch of sunlight, or less?

  • @WhistlersBrother have you seen the ted talk dedicated to this concept? their design evolved to look like a solar tracking silver flower.

  • Humanity is so behind.

  • i wanna get one

  • Espero alguien se apiade de nosotros los hispanos y lo traduzca para aporvechar la informacion

  • @Libreriabibliofilia better start learning english,it will be better for you /mejor aprende ingles ,sera mejor para ti....

  • @lucianfotache

    Is good.

  • im in the process of making a home made stirling engine for a school project but then my friends asked me whats the usage of it...honestly i dont know and i'd like to know whats the uses of these engines...

  • @kawaiiushii For one example, they are used in sewing machines. Just anything that might need linear repetitive motion normally fixated on one position.

  • if ur living in a cloudy rainy area, just dig a hole deep enough to get some lava! Then it's a done deal.

    : )

  • What is the power output of the Stirling engine? Is there somewhere to get a blueprint of this sterling so that it may be built by experimenters?

  • @gesnarfel

depends on the weight of the fly wheel the heavier and larger the fly wheel the more torque it will have. the harder it will be to slow down.

  • Is there one of these that runs off rain, we don't get any sun here in Ireland. LOL.

  • @FreindlyRanger Yes. It's called Hydroelectric.

  • Oh right, well then we're already ahead of the posse. hooray.

What's the one that runs off potatoes called?

  • You don't want that, it's a waste of Vodka.

  • Wow, I didn't know you spoke Irish. LOL.

    Is maith liom Vodka.

  • now wouldn't it be cool if the gov would have send out items like this to be manufactured for places that need it and stimulated the economy with "free" energy... some low users could have used a few of these,,,

  • Can a sterling engine be powered by magnets?

  • Hi. Very interesting.

    I have some questions:

    1) Could you add a dinamo to this engine?

    2) Could you do a system that follows the Sun?

  • same as a coal train. but how did you get one so big?

  • could be pretty cool if you could cool it with ln2

  • Wow, the lens really concentrates a lot, and in a smaller space than a parabolic mirror

  • I've seen a lot of Stirling Engines, but all of them are little size. What is the power they can generate ? If this system were able to generate power I think It would be spread in many places. It seems just can generate movement but without a reasonable amount of energy.

  • so could you hook it to an electric heater and heat the motor to run the heater and have free heat?

this is the first ive heard of these engines so i dont know a thing about them but i like the idea

  • If heating were your goal, you wouldn't put this in the middle, reducing efficiency, you would just use the sunlight that heats the air chamber directly. This is to demonstrate making mechanical power from heat energy, which has it's own uses. The actual amount of energy this produces (especially at this scale) would be rather low, probably enough to drive a small light bulb.

  • It already uses heat as input. Why to triple convert it with losses if you are not electric junkie?

  • you'd be running a energy deficit doing that... it wouldnt be possible according to the laws of thermodynamics

  • Wouldnt be possible to do what?

  • Comment removed

  • sorry was supposed to be a reply to andrew0901280

  • OMG awsome how the hell is that working?

  • Nice video demonstrating the use of solar energy and the stirling cycle engine. Keep up the good work.

  • What's the size of the frenel lens?

  • if you magetize the fly wheel and case it up right , can you run it as a generator

  • this is the future of all energy on the space doesnt exist night

  • I dont know much about this stuff but why cant you generate electricity with this engine

  • you can, that's the point.

  • because we dont have the tehnology to make the energy we need... solar energy makes around 10% the energy we need

  • there's enough energy coming from the sun every second to power the entire world. we just need to find out how to absorb it more efficiently.

  • @Juturn4 grow a lot of grass and burn it

  • Hmmm, If I would collect all my organic waste products for methane gas to run a larger size Stirling generator it's could be enough for my simple live style. Where is my calculator....

  • All computers have a calculator, no need to try to find anything.

  • Except for financing, material and time to build it I realy do not need to find anything ;)

I also can run a CAD software and design the whole thing first.

    I guess planning is crucual...

  • Check out the suncatcher system by Tessera, they are building a 500 MW Plant in the US right now. Also check out the video responses

  • thats a one banger,,a strait 6 would power your house right now,,,, i could see a mearor scrolling a cross mannt cilenders...i realy like this engine,,,pg&E PROBALY HATES IT,,LOL

  • Critics: This sterling engie is cool for a homebrew project, but the design is short of the state of the art in the same way that the engine that powers a weed trimmer is short of a 32v Northstar V8 or a TDi internal combustion engine.

You (guy who put this vid up) rock for building this and showing how it works. It would be awesome if you made some more-efficient designs, but as it is it's very cool.

  • theres already a company which produces this product professional

sterling maybe not state of the art but its efficiency isnt worse at all!

this motor has some disadvantages...it would work in cars pretty well but it does in this situation here.

  • Interesting concept. However I don't see how something like this could be used on a residential, let alone industrial scale.

However, something like that should be able to power a small generator - great for camping.

  • the INFINIA company produces sterling engine which produces 1lmost 4kwh of power from just single unit, which if you harvest hundred or thousand of the unit in a vast open desert like space you can generate large amount of energy, ofcourse the cost of unit still is high as the unit is heavy and needs a dish which can track the sun during the day.also these system in industrial units where there boiler or furnaces can be used from the heat wastage from chimney output as long as furnace works.

  • Did you mean space as in the final frontier?

I'm not saying this idea doesn't have merit it needs to be refined and put in a much bigger scale.

If companies saw it was cheaper to run, they would invest in an engine that ran on piss.

Hit them in the wallets, that's how you motivate people.

  • I said space not outer space, I mean a place open place, open land where you can keep more number of these unit for power production. I did not mean outer space,

it may be possible to cultivate the energy by sterling engine in outer space also, as there one can have 24 hours sun for energy production. I think NASA scientist must have taught about these thechnology to use in space also. already these system is being used in submarine where they harvest the boiler waste energy by using S engines.

  • a steam engine won't work in space, the water would boil instantly.

    Heh.

The people at NASA have enough trouble finding money for the next launch and with the shuttle program ending next year don't expect anything great from NASA in the next 15+ years.

  • This is not a steam engine, you need to research about the sterling engine, industrial version they use gases like helium for piston movement and the gas is enclosed, and is not wasted. the gas is recycled by cooling fins or radiators.

  • secondly it doesnt mean the whole thing is kept under vacuum , the system is enclosed and does not have any contact with vacuum environment , which will cause boiling of water or any liquid used .

these engines are presurized gas which are sealed properly not to fill every now and then gas inside the system, therfore proper sealing of engine in needed, because of these problem new technlogy of sterling engine uses the helium gas in ther systems.

  • I'm an accountant so I don't know. Hehe...

When somebody wants to depreciate the equipment after a few years thats where I come in.

  • i could use my death ray to power this

  • can you do a video explianing how exactly those work

  • namely the rotation of the drive axle, the inertia from that compresses the cylinder keeping the system going, stopping that cylinder stops the process. though i think thats true of all engines...

as for torque, the power of the engine depends on the difference between the hot cylinder and the cold cylinder (or the hot part and the cold part) so the colder the cold part and the hotter the hot part the more energy and the more subsequent torque. your heat sink was hot enough to boil water..

  • i do wish you would make more practical engines. use a bigger cylinder, have a better coolant system, and please stop using huge lenses for small engines, if you cant do the work with a proportional lens then scaling becomes an issue, if you actually NEED a lens which is 10x the size of the engine you have problems with your design.

if you use a better cooling system (such as cold water or something) you will get better power, but torque can be an issue, it depends on its motions to keep moving.

  • I'm with you on that last comment ???? Do you make these Fresnel lenses and parabolic mirrors? you can make a pretty good v low power generator out of an old computer HD. A couple of these would be just the thing to demonstrate a few of your ideas.

  • ???

  • @GREENPOWERSCIENCE (He calls his p#^!$ his coffee.)

  • well i must say that you randomly responded without even loking at the vid O_o

anyways very nice vid im making a similar engine but its for a school project this helped me a lot

  • @silverpizza100 stupid !

  • @silverpizza100 No, it is actually "Stirling", my friend

  • @silverpizza100 wtf? stirling

  • @silverpizza100 You sir, are the idiot. It is a Stirling engine. Named after its inventor Robert Stirling.

  • well, most of these videos show models that CAN'T power anything, they are for display only, that size of model right there, at full speed can be stopped by one finger on the flywheel. Mine doesn't have enough torque to produce the 1.5 volts required to light one LED. the smallest generator I could find to attach to it only made about .5 volts. To do work, it has to be pretty freakin big. It's the weakness of the stirling concept. They don't do torque.

  • Couldn't high rpm be somewhat exchanged into torque with cogwheels? Just a quick thought

  • i think it has a ienie mienie bit of torge though

cus if he would grab the fly wheel righ away it would pull a bit right ?

  • I think if you changed the cooling to a drive system E,Z . the cooling system could be a transmission the dodge bros came up with the hydromatic now its automatic if you use the cooling system as a automatic trans insted of trans fluid use a gas like a/c with oil freon / oil /one way ports the gas expands at a coole temp and canot go back through a smaller port

  • hi dan thanks for your great vids :))

  • I hate how most of these videos show next to no load against it. If u had a constant load on that engine, soon as u cut the sun from it. It would of stopped very quickly.

  • This engine was just a small demonstrator model; it's purpose was just to illustrate the concept for using thermodynamic principles to generate mechanical energy. The more advanced systems are hooked up to generators that can then supply renewable energy. If Obama is going to put us into as much debt as he is, I hope the Federal Gov. starts handing out big grants for the building of thousands of energy stations using this system. Excellent video!

  • !! Safety First !!

Always wear arc welding glasses or very dark sunglasses around large mirrors! If you are using sunglasses then check their UV rating with a sunglasses shop.

Even the glare reflecting off the equipment can cause long term eye damage.

I like the earlier comment by a viewer about painting it black.

  • that is quit cool

  • So hook one of these bad boys to a cars exhaust for endless supply of heat. They could then in turn power battery packs if you turned your flywheel into an alternator.

  • Wow, you could probably power a house with a sizeable one of those.

  • Where did you get the engine?

  • good..... ;)

  • lo it sounds like somone having a power wank

  • How much was that model and where can you find them for sale

  • What was your questions, I usually only delete something if it has F#*k or similar profanity.

  • Very COOL!

  • Where can i purchace a large Fresnel lense?

  • We have some on our website greenpowerscience

  • I'd love to see high definition thermal view of this process. That way you might also determine better heat processing and where possible further improvements of the design would be possible.

  • I think your lens would run a much larger sterling engine or generator judging from how long the engine ran after the heat was removed.

  • Large engine? Be nice to see something that works in a practical sense, as part of a house, doing something truly useful!

  • Cool vid,Idk about the jesus fish thing.Still +5.

  • i'm only 12 so i dunno how you would normally make a fresnel lens stand or w/e u call it and where/how u get a stirling engine and what the purpose of the engine is.

  • If you can slow it down that much with your finger how much electricity can it really generate, though? That's not all that much power... :(

  • this is more of an example of the concept, a larger version of this could easily be a viable source of power. sorry that sounded nerdy

  • carnot cycle

  • young boy - you'll be in love with a woman soon enough, dont worry. But please stop spamming youtube with your childish comments, would you?

  • you tell him!

  • you need too change out the air in side the engine too hydrogen its about twice as efficient as air in side the motor... hydrogen can be gathered by dc current and a battery or a any dc sorce and water.

  • Hydrogen engines have to be ridiculously well engineered with no leakage, not something you can make or even buy cheaply. Hydrogen in this engine would all escape very rapidly...It's still an awesome video though!

  • a simple heat exchanger would increase power output by alot

  • Water cooled one I mean

  • What if electrostatic cooling was applied to the "radiative cooling" part of the sterling engine? How much would this increase the temperature difference and power of the engine?

  • is it possible to build a wankle rotory type engen that would incorperate the sterling drive techneci

    ciao

  • Google "suncatcher stirling energy systems" to see a 25kWatt solar stirling powered electric generator.

38' diameter parabolic dish made up of 82 mirrors. At the focal point is a stirling engine driving an electrical generator.

    Peak efficiency of 30%.

  • You could use a synthetic diamond as a lense. This is now feasible. And he could have used a larger surface area to collect solar energy.

I was thinking take a striling engine, use a pv for the heat collection surface, water cool this with a heat exchange, exchange the heat to a large reservoir, slowly this will build up heat in the reservoir, then you have a steam pipe you could hook up to a fly wheel or something to make electrical output.

  • Just tell me how to make my own STIRLING ENGINE, and where to get the flywheel!

  • The world is full of table-top models of Stirling engines that do nothing but sit there and spin. I would like to see someone actually hook up a Stirling engine to a 'machine' and do some actual 'work' with it.

  • You don't have to hook it up with a machine you have to hook it up to a generator;)

  • That's pure genius. (snicker, snicker)

  • souns like tractor

  • Every time some piece of tech / science is posted on youtube there are always commenters saying stuff like "oh yea thats good but it cant to this so it sux". I'm amazed at how resistant to change some people are.

What I want to know is how much heat can this thing process before it starts loosing efficiency? Would a setup with say 20 full-length mirrors, a heat sink, and a stirling motor be able to produce decent power?

  • Well, Stirling engines were used in the 1940's and 1950's as a small source of power for some companies.

Complaints were initial cost, size, and worse-off power production than conventional methods.

Personally, I think these are amazing.

However, I think steam engines and other very old technology are great as well.

I would like to build one of these myself.

    You have a good day.

  • its just air or some gas

  • I bet this engine can't gewt even 100w of electricity if connected to a generator. People say a square meter of sun light have 1kw, and with mirror and devices to warm water to move a turbine, it would get 60% eficiency. BUT I NEVER SAW ANYTHING CLOSE TO THAT, BUT ONLY PEOPLE PALYING WITH MIRRORS AND SMALL STILRLING ENGINES.;

  • 25% efficient, which is better than most solar panels, and when scaled up can power a decent ammount

  • Thanks. So the guy with the other video and saying that could get 60% eficiency, was a fucking liar. No sun-heat collector system get 60%, even professional huge ones.

  • A Sytem on Israel use high eficiency solar panels, up to 36% eficiency, focused in parabolic mirror. So they also use water to cool the panel, and in the endy they get 35%converted to electric energy and hot water.

  • thats a clever system but i guess that it would result in some water loss so you would have to refill it and stuff,

    the Stirling e
