It´s a matter of taste. I prefer Mitsuko Ushida, Zimerman, and Arrau interpretations. It´s also a matter of interpretation. For me what he says doesn´t make any sense. anyway...
Of course the expressions on his face are a bit absurd. But then, it's not natural to see them so closely - one is normally in the audience! And frankly the expression when he plays the penultimate F# is very touching. Also I find it rather touching that as accomplished a musician as this flounders around when trying to explain the piece - he has to fall back on the trite Orpheus reference. On balance I like Paul Lewis's interpretation better, however.
@jeffg2020 I don't think you're a true artist if you think this man's facial expressions are "absurd." They're facial EXPRESSIONS. Expression in the face. I'm sure you don't sit there dead faced when listening to (for example) Beethoven's 9th symphony
Before playing Beethoven 4th, he has to show some performance on his sonatas... Preferably without commenting, as in the last 200 years so many great comments have been made on all of them.. He should spare his and listen to some recordings of Gilels, Backhaus, Gieseking, Lupu, Michelangeli...
...just what we need! Lang Lang explaining Beethoven's 4th! All the energies he waste making those "expressive" faces could be actually used to produce a less percussive sound. Just atrocious!
If I were Beethoven, I would kick his ass.....

Isn't Lang Lang describing act 4 of Orfeo by Monteverdi? He's saying that's what the piece is about.

Should listen to the trills in Zimerman's performance or Arrau.
