Doug, im in high school and was really confused what profession to choose. Im intersted in architecture but was confused whether or not to become an architect but thanks to your videos I finally decided to become an architect because its my passion....thanks again.
It's great that you mentioned failure as an important part of the learning process. Years ago, I watched an interview with David Bowie, in which he said that failing should be more valued by people. Anyone who knows about his career, knows that it took him years and several failed projects before he was successful. thanks for the advice! :)
Doug, I am studying to become an architect.. I am 19 years old and I was studying to become a dentist but I failed and dropped out.. Now I am enrolled in architecture and I'm into 1st semester.. I do not possess any art talent whatsoever but I am interested in this career so my question is, should I keep studying this career. I mean I like it and it's all fun.. What's your opinion on this?
Doug, I have been watching your videos. Moments ago I was in a crisis, I didnt know what I wanted to do and I was getting really depressed. I started looking for the thing I love the most and reserching about architecture I came upon you.
You have inspierd me and I have decided I want To Architect!
man you really A great guy, i just somehow cant stop listening to you. totally agree on the doing stuff. im kinda lost on the career stuff, from economics to graphic design.
anyway....you are driving people to move, to do, at least a little bit, and thats amazing, hats off.
Im 15, my passion is to become architect. But my parents are so against it since theres such limited job opportunities here in UK for it, and not to mention pay for trainees are unbelievably low. But I love it so much and its what Im going to do. They want me to go into the medical field where theres more pay, more jobs..., bleh..
Brilliant advice! I am an architect and still love the profession in spite of the many frustrations involved. I really love your series and your generosity in truly sharing. Thank you.
The difference being architecture and architorture is only two letters 'ec' becoming 'or'. Be inspired to be an architect or whatever. When inspired, self motivation will be there. Doug Patt, you are an inspiration!
i am 29, an architect , have been in school for 6 years, in the practice for 3 and somehow ended up resenting it terribly. i am trying to understand why i wanted to become an architect, or what sort of work i should do so i took a leave from arch. and tried old loves like painting and illustration, graphic design and somehow i still get drawn back, but differently. i think it was helpful in that it gave me some things to think about. it's hard, but i agree that in doing/failing you get clarity
@rheakurokawa that's quite a comment and very honest. I admire your attempt to find happiness and applaud it as well. The only way we move ahead in life is by trying, moving, doing, and working. I can also sympathize with your description of getting "drawn back but differently". Much the same as I. I wish you all the best and thanks for the comment. Kind Regards, Doug
@howtoarchitect To understand meaning of success, you must go trough fail. I would say something else, if you are just an architect, it can't work. Do something else, Make some music, go to nature, travel, cook...
For me, inspiration is engine of creation, and doing is fuel for inspiration. You speak as I think, and I'm watching.
@rheakurokawa evolve and re-invent has been the story of my own carrier, which has been long enough to force me to endure several economic downturns. I never lost the desire to do something, anything creative. I have grown as a human being and connected on a higher conscious level mostly from my experiences during harder times. Hitting those bumps in the road has taught me to steer, eventually, in the right direction...the direction my heart takes me. Peace, Brad
I always love watching your videos. They're funny, entertaining but most importantly very informational... one thing thou, Is that really how you talk? your tone goes up and down and up and down and up and down.lol!!
Hey KURUMACO,your case is 100% like mine.I am 27 years old and I have a passion for Architecture. The only difference between you and myslef is that unfortunately I have a post grad degree in Business Admin. But as he said it is not about what you are doing,it is about what do you love to do...
I'm 27 years old and recently decided to move to Montana (haven't moved yet) to go to arch. school. I have a couple years of college behind me (none of which applies to arch. school) and must become a resident before I can afford to attend this college (1 year in state). After that 6 years of school, point is I will be about 34 when i finish. This is scary. This video reminded me why it is the right choice. Because I love architecture and if I dont I could never be happy. It's in the doing.
I noticed u said what drives u to become an architect and what drives u to get out of bed in this video. If i said i wanted to be an architect because i like drawing im creative good at language and average at math would any of that be a good enough drive to keep being an architect?? I really like architecture because i like how buildings look and what architects do, ive read a few books by Frank wright and like some of his works and that inspires me alot. Also keep up the good work and continue
Yup u r awesome broooo
