I always liked how the villains in this flick had a kind of sexualy perverse edge to them. Like in this scene here, .. "You tortured her didn't you ?!! .. "Yes! A very interesting girl! I do think she rather enjoyed it !" ... Not exactly lines you'd hear Darth Vader say. Very novel and interesting touch, .. which makes it not so much a total kiddie flick ( like most sci-fi / fantasy / adventure films tend to be very juvenile ). Gives it an adult quality .

What important lesson did we learn at the end of this clip? When you are 2nd in command of the entire empire, and generally not well-liked, it's a good idea to take a few guards with you when you come off your shuttle. Especially, when you only have one good arm, and you are about to tell an important prince that he's under arrest. A cool black costume and a cocky attitude will not prevent you from getting a good ass kicking!

I don't see how a movie having good actors like Brain Blessed and Timothy Dalton would get bombed the way it did especially with Queen added to the movie. I think the critics are miserable people who needs to get laid and know what it is to just be a kid against even as an adult and not take thinks so seriously when judging flicks.

This was only a year after Star Wars, when there was still a generally very negative attitude towards sci-fi in general. Critics at that time would generally pan sci-fi movies, just out of principle

Thing is, THIS movie didn't just imitate SW ( like most other sci-fi flicks were doing at the time ) but actually kind'a DISTINGUISHED it'self , in many ways, from THAT movie, .. and thats something which it SHOULD be admired for !

@Skulldini what you need to remember is starwars did indeed come out in the 1970's, how ever Flash Gorden came out in the 1930's so the question really is who copied whom lol so in my humble opinion starwars and any other sci-fi movie copied the black and white version of this movie.

@mistle26 Well, even before the 30's movie serial, Flash Gordon was a comic. And, if you've seen that you'll find that THIS movie is actually more similar to THAT ( in terms of visual style anyway ).

Tonewise though, I finde this movie is actually kinde of similar to Barbarella ( ever seen that ), with the campiness, humor, and sexiness, .. and it also has some elements of the Wizard of Oz. It strikes me as being much more simmilar to THOSE films than to Star Wars .

@Skulldini Barbarella was an awesome flick, and yes I have seen the comics and what not, I just hate when people compare everything to starwars like it was the first sci-fi film ever made, yes Lucas did make a hit movie and a winning franchise but he was NOT the first to make good films about space or robots or w/e. Metropolis 1920 or 30 silent film is great, little slow but very good.

@pandaphil you are joking right? his hammy acting was the icing on the cake for the Flash Gordon movie. If the main character could actually act, the swirly backgrounds and silly unrealistic fight sequences would have seemed totally out of place.
