I think I can understand although didn't make it so it's just an opinion. A werewolf can imprint on any age... and because of the absolute devotion he has for Nessie, he is whatever he needs her to be but although Jacob isn't physically aging, he's so much older than Nessie and because of the differences between them, and his asserted role as her protector, he can't believe that he is really what she needs. Thankfully he is wrong... also if Bella knew that puppy would be vampire meat! :)
