  • Much more articulately put then my blasphemy contribution. kudos :)

  • Would you like some coffee?

  • @VicBlack20 she's not a big fan of coffee... she dislikes it more than rape

  • good video I liked it, and I think that anyone who has commented that you are are retard, bitch or what ever else in the comments on your about mythbusters etc vid really need to look at your other stuff before passing judgement.

although I think on both sides weather pro or anti to what that guy said I think people have blown it out of proportions would agree with me and say that all you were saying is that the guy was stupid rather than sexist which is what people thought you were saying?

  • I am in full agreement with you that Freespeech and Freethought should be tolerated, and even ENCOURAGED, as long as that knife is allowed to cut both ways. We condemn hypocrisy and rudeness, so civil debate, whatever one's viewpoint, is where the best ideas come from. Anytime this is stifled, something is lost. But speaking of Free speech, and the censorship OF it, we are down to the wire from political viewpoints. Would I vote for ANY law to silence ANY viewpoint. Never. Thats just ill..

  • BTW, rkwatson, there is a drastic difference between the opposition of criticisms leveled against the incorrect statements described in the bible and the depiction of Muhammad in a derogatory manner...While those vast minority of muslim brothers/sisters are apparently irritable and zealot fanatics, the vast MAJORITY of muslims across the world were protesting peacefully against the depiction of Muhammad.

  • Mens laws do not change people, they only bind them. People must be changed in their heart for any real lasting change to be made. Example: jails dont change criminals in majority. most who are changed decided to change their life. People discount scripture, but if anyone was to live by the principles that Jesus taught, we would not need man made laws of any sort....ever.

  • The bible does not speak against science or astronomy, it actually advocates them, but not the worship of those things. True followers of Christ will not force their beliefs on anyone at any time. They will show you the way by living it themselves. They may speak out against certain things, but they would never seek mandates against such things from the government, because that would be recognizing gov. above God. Anyone who forces others to be a certain way is seeking their own glory

  • @warrioroftruth71328 Well remember, there is a difference between what is ASTRONOMY ( and Cosmology), and Astrology. NOT the same. Astronomy is the marvel at God's cosmic creation. Astrology is occultism....

  • @Apologist4Christ973 ... i agree

  • As a Protestant Christian, I abhor the historic persecution of people who 'held and espoused opinions that differ from the world's religious fuundamentalists'. However, atheist states have persecuted Christians for 'blasphemy' (differing with the state's beliefs) and still do today (in North Korea particularly).

Threats to free speech and 'unacceptable' opinions today principally come from political correctness (received left thinking) and Islam. Lets be even handed here

    kind regards

  • Offending the religious - a "right."

    Offending women - "wrongful discrimination."

Makes sense. Your sacred cow is not sacred. My sacred cow is untouchable.

  • How did the law get put on the books "hundreds of years" earlier, when the US was barely 100 years old at the time? LOL "Hundreds of years" -- how old do you think the US is? What "books" are you referring to? English law? the colonial laws of Massachusetts Bay Colony?

  • @PeytonFarquhar1 The U.S. may not have been too much older than 100, but Europeans DID live here for a few hundred years before--Sorry.

  • Another great reporting on a wikipedia entry. Nice!

  • Thanks for sharing! I hadn't heard of Reynolds before, but that speech was worth reading.

  • Oh! That's that chick that got mad at that guy who wanted to have sex with her.

  • really, she is like a half a@@ christian preaching on there soap box.

  • RAYON MCINTOSH IS INNOCENT

    FREE RAYON MCINTOSH

  • Funny watching this video against religions, when you tried to burn a man at the stakes for simply asking you if you'd like coffee. Radical feminism is an evil religion too.

  • @LW3KFK4 That's not what Rebecca said... research FAIL!

  • had any males speak to you lately ,and have you reported it ? AMEN

  • Love your videos. I think you will enjoy mine. check them out.

  • Nothing about the universe has debunked Christianity.

Also they may be free thinkers But they do not sound "Great" by any means.

Challenge your philosophies and read "Mere Christianity" by C.S. Lewis.

The problems that all atheists have to face eventually is explaining where "right and wrong" come from. Do that intelligibly and accurately and you will have done what no other atheist has ever been able to do.

Oh, and do it without flippancy-- if you can.

  • @drewdpd1981 stars aren't ''lights''. so is the moon. the bible was written by ancient people that had no idea what this world, or even this universe, was.

where right and wrong comes from? definetly not from your bible!

    /watch?v=wUVXEmJRGns

  • Shut up bitch.

  • @williamiscool123 Blasphemy!!!

  • id be a huge fan of yours if only you didnt support male circumcision and discrimination against men.

most of what you say is great, but when you start saying women are oppressed because men invite you for coffee in an elevator when the guy asking had 20,000 nerve endings sliced off and was forced to sign up for selective service, i close my ears.

  • I'm proud to say that I, as well as many of my friends, are loud, proud blasphemers, spreading the good word of rationality, skepticism, plain old common sense throughout Jersey.

  • who belives in god, people seeking the truth such Blasphemys as to use the scriptire to promot the the status quo as it is for them to lie buy pulling sentuses from passages to promot the self

  • @OrphanPaper OK. You win, I lose. And no, I'm not Jewish, you antisemitic piece of shit.

  • @HandiCripple666 what makes you think I'm anti Semitic? , its not a game I was hoping for an intelligent exchange of idea's, I have learn being a skeptic means to be an “asshole” or narcissist nihilist ,there no point in discussing any thing except how wonderful it is to shit can those who do believe in something other than them self , peace be with you ,

  • Good video, unfortunately the description which ends up automatically in the facebook preview seems to be lacking, the Muhammad stuff seems like an afterthought. At the least the Reynolds trial seemed much more fascinating to me, and was why I shared. ...I get though that mentioning the Muhammad stuff is probably much better for getting views...

  • @zkriski If you're making a point in whatever setting, it generally helps your cause to make a cogent and well supported argument. I suppose you would expect the same from a religious person when debating them. "Feminists are haters because they hate" is simply stating your premises as the conclusion. You have not provided any evidence to qualify your statement - just like saying "Atheists are immoral because they have no moral obligations".

  • @zkriski seeing as you preffoessed a fondness for logic science and reason i figured you might respond better to that sort of an approach. I was wrong. nevermind.I will just go back to treating you with the same intellectual contempt your hypocrytical hate derived unreasoned assertions deserve.

  • Have you seen all the pro-Mormonism ads lately--youtube and otherwise? You can tell a Mormon is running for president.

  • @zkriski

I re-watched the video to double check, but I still can't find where in this video she injected extremist left-wing feminism, nor can I find where she tried to hijack the atheist movement.

  • @zkriski your assertion that feminism is a hate group is a hasty generalisation. your statements that there is 'no question' about it, they hate x,y and z and want to change human beings are assertions made without evidence. You equivocate a general philosophical position with its extremes. A lack of belief in a specific thing such as atheism does not preclude belief in anything but that to which it refers. Professing reverance for freedom is incompatible with your desire to supress feminism.

  • @zkrisi fuck yea begging the question!

  • @zkriski you think feminism is a hate group? it is clearly more that they are a group that you hate. that is all, you are easier to read than a harry potter book.

  • Comment removed

  • @zkriski all i see is you being loud mouthed and extremist and all you are proving is your own bigotry. Equating feminism to neo nazism further reveals your ignorance of pretty much everything, you are clearly not a modern thinking atheist, probably just vocally anti christian because it provides yet another oportunity for you to annoy people who have strong opinions on things. In other words you are a wind up merchant.

  • Fine words. Muhammad was another of these religion peddlers who advocate tolerance when they are in a weak position and order murders when they are strong.

  • @zkriski *jackiechanface*

  • @zkriski - your misogyny trolling isn't clever; please try harder 1/10

  • you make me sick -_-

  • why did we need a picture of robert ingersol? i understood what you were saying without you objectifying men like that. disgusting.

  • @zkriski What will damage atheism at the group level isattitudes like that. Religion permeates every aspect of our lives as such so does unbelief and so should unbelief. Disagreements occur within the atheist community because you can wed atheism with virtually any other ideology/viewpoint, it is not a 'closed church'. We have feminist atheists and patriachal ones, left wing and right wing etc etc. Such a diversity of perspectives is why atheist discourse remains vibrant.

  • @zkriski "So you don't care who represents you or speaks for you? "

    Absolutely I care.

People like you do NOT speak for me or for many other atheists.

    Thank no god!

  • Robert Ingersoll is a truly inspiring figure in the free thought movement.

    Great video Rebecca!

  • @zkriski "Why is this feminist speaking on behalf of atheists?"

Grow the fuck up - *please*

  • @zkriski "if we allow..." How exactly are you proposing to prevent it? Anyone's free to say what they want about anything.

  • @zkriski

What about Richard Coughlan or Terroja Kincaid? Should we silence them because they might cause the general public to associate atheism with smoking or obesity? Should we tell Dawkins to keep quiet in case some atheists don't agree with evolution? Should we squelch all discussion about gay rights because some atheists are anti-gay? What about abortion? The death penalty? Atheism does not exist in a vacuum, you don't have to agree with every atheist on everything, just let them speak.

  • Superluminous (beyond merely brilliant) quote there, Rebecca Watson.

    Great video. Thankyou. :-)

  • I don't think that the O.J. trial is a good comparison because in O.J.'s case he was clearly guilty of murder but he took advantage of the racial tension of the time and other things such as his celebrity status to get away with the murder. In this case, buddy really was not guilty of anything reasonably.

  • Yey, it's always refreshing to see your skeptical face again, Rebecca.

  • Definitely among your best videos. Thank you!

  • @rkwatson will you be at T.A.M. in 2012? I'm so sad I missed 2011 but I hope to be there this coming year!

  • This is why I come here. Great topic -- and a reminder is a good thing.

  • "In the minority, Calvin advocated toleration -- in the majority, he practiced murder." A very powerful quote. Humbling for all people fighting from the minority.

  • on subjects they new nothing about ,i find that statement and the preceding one ,logically misplaced and directionless, theirs a scripture all have fallen short of the glory of god , meaning in this context that the truth is twisted and restrained by the conduit in which it is conveyed ,and more to do with the writers own personality floors ,while the statement about astronomy showing that illogical truth as dose the u should be like me attitude of the presenters ,qualified end

  • @OrphanPaper as for the term dark ages is such a statement and only ended by the acceptance of some Germanic kings adopting roman elitism

  • :))))

  • "If all mankind minus one were of one opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person than he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind." - John Stewart Mill

  • Yay! New video! The post you made 9/29 on the Skepchick site made me afraid that you would stop posting videos. Keep it up!

  • Don't take this the wrong way, but would you like to have cup of coffee with me?

  • I didn't know that 19th century science knew the speed of light. Interesting.

  • Ah damn I missed blasphemy day, still I'm a walking talking blasphemer anyway so i guess its ok

  • Excellent video, RK.

  • Bloody hell! I missed Blasphemy day again!

    Love that quote btw

  • Fucking brilliant.

  • I shall blaspheme feminism.

  • @vdgsify Get over it, please.

  • There are a lot of topics on which I disagree with the Amazing Atheist, but on this I think he's spot on:

"There are too many people out there who think that just because homosexuality offends them, that they can tell homosexuals what to do. They think that them being offended makes the object of their offense indebted to them in some way. But it doesn't."

  • In honor of this occasion, today I sold my soul to the UBC Freethinkers for a cookie. Totally worth it.

  • I find your voice relaxing and there is no sexual connotation involved.

  • @nontheistdavid

How many guys do you say that to? *facepalm

  • @nontheistdavid It's a good thing you specified that, or you could have been in trouble.

  • Ingersoll. True American Hero!

  • Awesome. Thank Rebecca!

    Thanks for the link PZ!

  • Fabulous video.

  • Guess what I did on this Blasphemy Rights Day? I saw Tim Minchin live in Detroit. (I think it was his first time there.) He brought up the topic of Blasphemy Rights Day, before playing "Thank You God".

  • A profound secular "Amen", sister Rebecca. Well said.

Some people need reminding on a regular basis that blasphemy is a victimless crime.

  • Excellent

  • 0:07

    read-een and think-een

    wtf.

  • What an incredible speech. Thank you so much for sharing it with us.

  • I only Liked this because there isn't a Love button! Rock on, Rebecca!

  • @sailorcozmoz No, there is a love button. It's just hard to find some times. Guys seem to be the ones who have trouble finding it. ;-)

  • @shadowmax889 haha obviously not! As soon as I started watching rebecca I saw the resemblance.

  • Ingersoll rocks.

If John Calvin is the founder of Presbyterianism, then what's the deal with Calvinism?

Well yes, technically, the trial was a defeat for Reynolds and Ingersoll, but that punishment was a veritable drop in the bucket compared to what Reynolds could have been in for if the prosecution had gotten its way.

  • @lazyperfectionist1 Calvinism/Reformed theology is the theological position of Presbyterians, like Arminianism is the theology of Methodists. Calvinism is found in other Protestant churches but I guess it's generally associated it w/ Presbyterianism. Confusing (and boring) stuff, I only know this b/c I come from that background.

  • That the ad before the video was for "Single Muslim" amused me greatly.

    Also, awesome video.

  • great video

  • "Every Sperm is sacred" (Meaning of Life)

  • @debaser71 What are the fundamentals of feminism?

  • @lazyperfectionist1 rape culture, patriarchy, nice guyism(tm), shrodingers rapist, etc...check out finallyfeminism101 for the entire horror show....if you think feminism is merely "the radical idea that women are people too!" then you haven't been paying attention. I only became aware of the nonsense because my favorite atheism and secularism websites were overrun with theses self proclaimed "radfems". They are a scary , foul mouthed, hateful bunch.

  • @debaser71 Well now, I've been subbed to rkwatson for a while now. If these are the fundamentals of feminism and she is a feminist fundamentalist, how come I need you to detail them? They should be everywhere, permeating every video she makes.

  • @lazyperfectionist1 did you miss elevatorgate and the videos where Becky flat out calls students misogynists? Did you miss where she practically calls for a boycott of Richard Dawkins because RD dared disagree? Look beyond just her youtube videos that she posts under rkwatson. After elevatorgate she took several weeks off from youtube posting..really, you missed all this?

  • @debaser71 Back to my point. If RKWatson is a feminist fundamentalist and these are the fundamentals of feminism, then how come they don't permeate every video she makes? Is she just really sneaky about concealing them here, but for some reason, utterly unable to conceal them elsewhere?

  • @lazyperfectionist1 rkwatson is also rebecca watson and skepchick...if you simply google her and elevatorgate then you'll see way more information than you ever really wanted to know...as far as her youtube videos, look at the one on circumcision and some of the don't be a dick videos. Again, look beyond this one video to get a more complete picture.

  • @debaser71 "rkwatson is also rebecca watson and skepchick"

    As I am well aware.

"if you simply google her and elevatorgate then you'll see way more information than you ever really wanted to know"

None of which has anything to do with my question.

"as far as her youtube videos, look at the one on circumcision and some of the don't be a dick videos."

You mean the one where she explains that female circumcision is worse than male circumcision because it's more akin to castration?

  • @lazyperfectionist1 Here, she's essentially saying that the amount of pain a man goes through when castrated is the amount of pain a woman goes through when circumcised, and so as much as one objects to the first of these, so much should one object to the second. What's wrong with this argument?

Incidentally, I saw each of the 'don't be a dick' videos and I don't see what any of them have to do with feminism in any sense of the word.

  • @lazyperfectionist1 These were her advice about how atheists should treat believers.

The first video I saw of hers was her first response to the Blasphemy Challenge, and in the comments, I expressed an attraction. Here we are three years later, and she still hasn't gotten around to blocking me. Why do you suppose that is?

Because she has no objection to guys having taste and a subsequent attraction to her. The problem she has is being cornered about it, and she made that pretty clear.

  • @lazyperfectionist1 Since I did not corner her, she tolerates my presence on her channel.

Now back to my question. You alleged that the fundamentals of feminism are rape culture, patriarchy, nice guyism, schrodinger's rapist, etc. You also alleged that rkwatson is a feminist fundamentalist. If these are both true, then these themes should be the rule on her channel, not the exception. They should be impossible to miss.

  • @lazyperfectionist1 You have pointed to a handful of videos of hers I happen to have seen and insisted they are there, yet I have watched these videos and seen nothing of the kind. So if your premises are both well founded, then where are these themes?

  • @lazyperfectionist1 Hey Mr. LazyP. I'm a long time subscriber. Good to see you running the inexperienced thinkers through their laps. Give them some mental exercise and they might grow up strong.

  • @TheThomaswastaken We can hope.

  • Fantastic video.

Has anyone ever told you that you remind them of Amy Farrah Fowler?

  • @DProulx19 So i was not the only one who though "Rebecca" when i first saw Amy Farrah Fowler

  • Nice quote Rebecca. I love the idea of donating $75 in honor of Charles Reynolds to a worthy secular organization. In addition, I think that on July 21 (the date of the verdict in the Scopes trial) I will donate $100 (what Scopes was fined) to the National Center for Science Education (ncse.com).

  • as always: lovely (as in intellectually stimulating) ;)

  • Probably one of your best videos

  • lets blaspheme and put it on youtube so god knows whats up....as long as the asshole doesnt ask me up for coffee i'm good.

  • Well said as usual.

  • Do you have a link for the text of the speech?

  • Great Video! Time to blaspheme!

  • Great words for this day, and I shall be checking out the entire speech. Thanks.

  • Brilliant! Thanks for the excellent quote. :)

  • Jehovah! Jehovah! Jehovah!

  • I sorta lolled at the end; "It shouldn't be a crime to hold and espouse opinions that differ from those of the worlds religious fundamentalists." You blocked me from twitter because I politely disagreed with your tone toward those of us who would neither call ourselves feminists nor masculinists and did critique your outrage toward masculinists.

  • @GingerAtheist "YOU BLOCKED ME ON TWITTER, AND THAT IS THE SAME EXACT THING AS CHARGING ME AS A CRIMINAL!" Get over yourself, kid.

  • @brittanythecaptain I didn't say that. I was pointing out that she censored me not that she charged me of something. Her censorship of peoples is just as closed minded as those fundamentalists. Also it disgusts me that you would mock such a serious challenge to Ms. Watson; maybe you should rethink how much you trust her word. Lastly I am not the 'kid' in this case because you are the one who took me out of context in an all capitals rage.

  • @GingerAtheist No, you're the one misunderstanding. The all caps rage was making fun of you and your ridiculous comment. She said it shouldn't be a crime to hold different opinions from religious fundamentalists, and you likened that statement to her not wanting to talk to you over Twitter. You were not censored. You were not vilified. She just didn't want to talk to you. There's a big difference between the two. Once again, get over yourself, kiddo.

  • @brittanythecaptain I don't feel like I should be all capped I don't care that much about the situation. I disagree that blocking someone from twitter is akin to not wanting to talk to someone. If she really wanted to not talk to me then she doesn't respond. Her response was an action; it silenced her from having to hear criticism. She doesn't act well toward serious critics that happen to be 'smaller' . I am on her par or more as far as critical thinking skills. And your tone is condicending.

  • @GingerAtheist The vitriol she received over something so tame was overwhelming. She probably blocked a lot of people simply because she no longer wanted to see it. You act like you're someone important, but I can tell that you're not. If the situation is truly something that you don't care that much about, why bring it up at all? Your indignation shows that you're an angry, little man; probably sexist to boot. For the third time now: Get over yourself.

  • @brittanythecaptain Miss I don't take myself very seriously; I take criticism of ideas very seriously. I am worried that her voice is one that is being followed without the consideration that she doesn't have a mechanism for self criticism. If she silences those that oppose her through censorship she may looses the option of being incorrect which is somthing Authoritarians do. Furthermore you don't know me; your prefference for ad hominem attack is telling. I am a gender-egalitarian.

  • @GingerAtheist Are you fucking kidding me? How about you go check out her blog where she talks about the constant barrage of attacks and arguments she receives daily since making that video? She BLOCKED YOU FROM TWITTER (keep in mind, this is what you're angry about) because she was tired of all the arguments. It has nothing to do with her silencing opposition or being an authoritarian. It has everything to do with her trying to just move on.

  • @brittanythecaptain It was the week it occured. Why bother? Thanks for your critique.

  • @brittanythecaptain and how about you check out the various sites where people tried to have meaningful discussion about feminist theory...and they were shouted down, insulted, and literally excommunicated from certain blogs. Don't forget about "lol what about the menz!?" "the patriarchy hurts men too" "if you approach me, you are shrodingers rapist" "women don't have privilege" etc. Watch what happens when feminist theory is challenged.

  • @debaser71 What does this have to do with anything? Is this what Rebecca did? No.

  • @brittanythecaptain Becky was throwing around the misogynist slur against anyone who dared disagree, in public against real people using real names...and maybe you missed her other videos, blog posts, and all the commentary on her blog. Stop pretending Becky is innocent of not stirring shit up. Just like "radical" feminism isn't just about the equality of women, Becky's actions are not limited to one simple "don't do that guys" admonishment.

  • @debaser71 Do you know Rebecca personally? Your use of "Becky" seems patronizing. Of course she stirred shit up. There's an obvious problem in the atheist community, and I think it's something that needs to be addressed. Yes, I did see the other videos and blog posts from Rebecca. I don't feel like she did anything wrong.

  • @debaser71 Wow I had never heard of this "Shrodonger's Rapist" idea before, that is insane! I could say the same thing to her (her being the uptight bitch who uses that phrase), how do I know she is not a Karla Homolka serial killer or robber type of person? They don't realize that walking around with that kind of paranoia is really self defeating. That idea disgusts me so much. I hate girls that think like that.

  • Rebecca, you're so pretty

  • YOU ARE AWESOME! I wish I knew you in RL...

  • Going to New Jersey is always a bad idea...

  • awesome video

  • Great video, skepchick.

  • I don't agree that Astronomy has - above all things else - enlarged the horizon of human thought. I think he probably overstated things..back in the day. The universe it not infinite practically speaking...if we can only gaze at it from our vantage point.

The great part of his speech was the beginning, about how demagogues are created. He said "church" but the same principles apply for any group..such as Atheists.

  • @xy11xy How are atheists a group that try to suppress the speech of others? Maybe I'm missing something here...

  • @saganthelizard

Maybe you are....missing something, that is. You only have to look around a bit online for examples.

  • @xy11xy So to be clear, you are saying that atheists are attempting to limit the free speech of religious people. Could you please link me to an example?

  • @saganthelizard

To be clear, you have to posess certain character traits, then use those traits as a detector to find the examples. Those traits will drive you to do your own research.

The character traits are: honesty, fearlessness; moral courage; independence, maturity; integrity.

  • @xy11xy So, rather than provide an example to back up your claim, you are going to instead suggest that someone you have never meant lacks the character traits of honesty, fearlessness, moral courage, independence, maturity, and integrity? You have the burden of proof, not me. I have searched and have not come across any examples of atheists trying to suppress the free speech of religious groups. There are many examples of the opposite, however.

  • @saganthelizard

It's like demanding an example of racism...if you need an example, you're probably a racist. I am way, way, way ahead of you.. And, now we understand each other.

..just being CLEAR right backatcha, buddy!

  • @xy11xy It's obvious you aren't interesting in an actual dialogue. You are only interested in making claims you aren't willing to substantiate and and insulting people who are simply trying to understand where you are coming from. Maybe one day you will grow up.
