I am one of the Marine tankers that participated in Marine Week St. Louis. In fact, I am the Marine standing infront of the tank, hooking up the slave cables and firing it up. Immediatley after this video was filmed, i drove this tank onto a HET in the middle of what i assume was market street in st. louis. I was wondering if anyone had a video of the tank actually being ground guided onto the HET. I need that video as a reference for junior Marines (drivers) in my company. Please email info.

hmm, if wikipedia is correct the m1a2 has greater operational range than the leo2.... suck that turbo diesels. and a turbine engine is only one rotating shaft with fanblades on it.

and a diesel engine had piston, crackshaft, valves, and hundeds of bearings that can fail

American Generals complained about their logistics of having to support the Abrams ALL THE TIME, so much in fact, that they looked into designs for replacing that thirsty engine...

@Birdy890 i will im waiting to get back to the states right now i gotta start small though my first gas turbine will run on propane and after i master it i will make one with an evaporator for diesel with a larger turbo thats when ill make the tank but the first one will be a racing gokart called PRO-PAIN by design and the way im making it when started people will have to stand atleast 75m away on startup and once it spools up ill dump a clutch and that sucker is gonna FLY

@Sovereign1023 Aren't sabots just things to carry projectiles out of barrels? I agree though, DU darts are very scary on both a short and long term basis, anyone who get hit by one is gone, and fertile materials aren't good for your water tables over say ten years unless you really need Pu-239.

@wikieditspam Yeah, the SABOT is the mechanism that allows the dart to travel down the barrel. We just call the whole thing SABOT for short.

Abrams starts fast enough, only whiny euro countries worry about fuel consumption, packs can be changed by superior trained mechs WHEN THEY ACTUALLY BREAK. tell your story walking son. M1A2 SEP is the most dangerous tank in the world. Challenger, leopard, leclerc, t80, bitch please...

Assuming you average 45mph, a car gets 4500 hours of running time. An aircraft turbine gets 10k (equal to about 500,000 miles) before even being overhauled. Tank engines don't last very long, and we tend to refurbish early rather than replace our engines, but we still have better engine life.

Abrams = cheaper & easier engine maintenance. Until bunker oil is $20 a gallon (doesn't NEED JP8), it's cheaper.

@Towel1e The gas turbine has it's advantages though, rapid acceleration, quieter, and less visible exhaust. And in my experience with the M1A1/A2, the Turbine was never an issue as far as maintenance. Oh, and the Abrams is a "real" tank too ;)

@phillyslasher Plus, if your crew has some serious testicular fortitude, you can pull off the governor and dash at ~65mph and scare the shit out of your opponent when you're suddenly behind his lines. Meanwhile, at those revs, in top gear, a turbodiesel will eat itself.
