Nice man!! Im 15 and Im worknig with my band, were almost on Itunes and Ive been playing guitar for over 6 years. I love metallica, and this video helped me, the tabs I looked up are confusing... and I finally got my favorite Metallica song down! thanks man!
The idea is that learning a song can be easier when you see someone else play. We all learn from each other. In fact, watch the way I form chords with my left hand (close to the neck, almost like a fist, instead of wrist extended out from the neck and playing with fingertips). I picked that up from watching Kirk Hammett himself. It's easier for me to control. Anyway, I trust you get the idea--seeing other players can help you learn quicker than figuring it all out the hard way by yourself.
do you recommend that randall half stack for metallica style based players? i know thats the brand kirk uses, and i already have kirks guitar, so its either line 6 HD150 or this. i need a half stack for practicing at home and/or gigs. any suggestions?
Well, you can't ever go wrong with a 4x12 cabinet behind you. :) The brand you use depends on the sound you want. 'Tallica played Marshalls in the early days, then Mesa-Boogies, and now (Kirk at least) Randalls. This is an older Randall, and the distortion is straight from the head--no pedals. Mesa-Boogies have a stompin' sound as well. With the latest technology some systems can give you any sound you want. I'd keep hitting guitar shops until you find something that has what you're looking for.
I've got my distortion and gain all the way up. Bass on 10; Mid on 0; the treble at about 7 or 8. Reverb on just enough for some texture. Of course, the amp settings depend on the type of amp you're using, size of your cabinet, number of speakers, etc. The pitch is a standard E tuning.
This is really good. Have you released a tab for this? I only ask because sometimes I can't tell which note you're playing because your hands are in the way.
I dont know what Metallica was thinking when they released ride the lightning....they shoulda made this song a single it is awesome...and you did a hell of a job playing it...this is deffinately one of mt fav 5 from metallica and cuz of this vid i can play it now :)
Sorry. I tried to keep it "beginner friendly." The solo would be for more advanced players, and I wanted this to be helpful to players starting out. Maybe down the road in another video...
A friend of mine, who's played guitar for 7 years now, tries to do songs by ear. But it turns out damn wrong. I've told him several times, but he won't listen. He thinks he's right. Dumb shit. But this was awesome!
As I mentioned in the "About the Video" section, a lot of players like to use tabs, and they can be very helpful at times. My only point is there are a lot of inaccurate versions on the Internet. That's why I hope this video will be helpful. You can compare what I play with the tabs and make sure what you're doing is correct. Don't be too hard on your friend. Learning to play by ear can be a big help in developing a sense of tone. The trial and error of it is a good learning process.
Sometimes. A lot of their earlier stuff was in E. Some songs were in D. A lot of the later stuff has been in D, which has been what a lot of metal bands have done in recent years as well because it sounds just that much heavier than standard tuning.
I think you're suffering unnecessarily. In fact, trying to down pick the main riff in this song, you're lucky your wrist didn't fall off! You are right that Metallica does down picking for their typical muted phrasings--like the riffs in Master of Puppets or Creeping Death, for example. But their high speed stuff--like this song, or Fight Fire with Fire, etc.--is definitely up and down strokes. Listen close to the original recording, and I think you'll hear what I mean.
I could play that when i was 14 in `88. i recorded me playing it along with the tape on my ghetto blaster.. I still got the tape! And shit sounded pretty fukin good! I havent played my guitar in years! i dont think i can play it now!
Planning to learn the soloes in the song, do you know of a tab which is fairly accurate? Your right that there are many inaccurate ones.. those are the ones I found :(
I really don't use tabs, honestly; I prefer to play by ear. But my suggestion would be to look for tabs by Wolf Marshall. There may be some on the Internet. If not, check for a printed version in a guitar store.
Btw, I don't trust the "official" Metallica tabs in guitar stores... I read one of them, and they tabbed the bass intro of "For Whom the Bell Tolls" as a guitar...
Most of their early stuff was in standard pitch, except for songs like The Thing That Should Not Be, and later, Sad But True -- which are in D. If you haven't already, try tuning to the album itself. The fingering on the video should should then be the same. (If you notice, I'm playing along with the CD itself.) If that doesn't work, it could be that your video plays a touch slower on the Internet, making the tone sound lower.
My friends and I while playing Metallica covers in High School found out that Ride the Lightning was recorded in Europe. Most European tunners tune to 443 instead of the American norm 440. if you tune to 443 and play any ride the lightning with the CD you will notice this was the case on this recording. rtguitar, the illusion of being in drop d, is because of the hammer from an open E string to the second fret.

what guitar are you using?

The one in the video is an Ibanez. I have a Carvin as well. The Carvin has stronger pickups, but its X shape makes it harder to play sitting down.

I'm learning it too but I try to do most of the palm muted notes with downstrokes (james only does so) but after some time it fucking hurts my wrist
