I rememnber my big bro buying this record on Jamaica Ave in Queens back in 1980 ans me sneaking it to listen to it whenever I could. The roots of rap truly. When we didn't even have a name for it.
I had this playing through my phone the other day at an outside bar and someone wanted to know if it was the Beastie Boys! I can definitely tell they were influenced a lot by the Funky Four Plus One. I play this all the time and wish I could get an mp3 or CD of it- It's impossible for me to listen to it and feel sorry for myself at the same time.
I am mostly a fan of the golden age BOOM BAP hip hop era from 1992-2005 but this joint right here is FUNKY. I am vibin and feeling this whole rhyme and rhythm from my head down to my feet. Very nice, i am definitely giving this a THUMBS UP. peace to all my hip hop junkies.
@leotheloser it's only childish if you never came from it...it would be more childish to rap about something you don't know anything about. I do love the rap from late 70's/early 80's but I don't put down other rap in general terms.
when i thought of "fuck the police" i remembered a couple of skater punks cursing in public thinking they were cool while playing that song on their phone. douchebags.
but i wasnt thinking that back in that time black people were oppressed by the police
I knew this was the longest rap song! Check the label 16minutes! The problem is trying to find it, this is on Enjoy Records, the other versions are are Sugar Hill records and they cut them short for some reason. Question, if there is a 16min version, why is yours only 9:42? Thanks for putting it out for us.
omg...remember sneaking out to the club hear this song and bought it when i got off punishment 2 weeks later. those where the good days the 12in long play cost me 2.99 plus tax lol
Wow...thank you for posting the long version. This is history right here, recognize...first female M.C. on wax..and I think they were the first rap group on national T.V. = SNLive. THIS is HIP HOP to me. Lil Rodney C, KK Rockwell, Keith Keith, and Jazzy Jeff AKA Raheim (later with The Furious 5)
Fellas lets get this straight 1st things 1st. Jazzy Jeff was not Rahiem. The original Funky 4 was KK, Keith Keith, Sha Rock and Rahiem. After the battle with the Furious 4 (Mele Mel, Kidd Creole, Cowboy and Mr. Ness) Rahiem was offered a spot with the Furious 4 and thus became the Furious 5. Funky looking for a replacement recruited LiL Rodney C who wouldnt join the group without his friend Jazzy Jeff. So the group recruited them both thus The Funky 4 Plus One More was bornREAL TALK

These muthafuckers was hot to def back in the days. As far as the street goes they were neck and neck with the Furious 5, as kids we use to sit around and debate which group was better. I must say even though the Furious 5 was tighter the Funky Four was the new blood. and ThemaddproF is right even though they are in hip hop's history books they should have gotten way more recognition..REAL TALK
Without a doubt this is my all time favorite rap record, with it's harmonizing and interesting stories as well as dancebale beat. Too bad it's so hard to find and the Funky 4+1 More never got NEAR the recognition they deserved.
Sha Rock is a legend.
