John Hiatt is a great song writer but his voice is less than desirable. But if you like that kind of voice then go for it. I prefer to hear a voice of an angel. Suzy has also made Night Riders Lament (Ian Tyson)her very own.
This great singer was said to have the largest range of any singer he had ever seen. That was Roy Orbison. She used to play the local circuit here in Peoria Il when she started. She was never bad or homely.

Don't get me wrong she has a beautiful voice, and she is a beautiful woman which never hurts your appeal. But John wrote it, feels it, and you can't copy that soulful voice. Check out John's "Have alittle faith in me" for a better example. He's also a much more accomplished musician (guitar, piano etc.) Also for a truly beautiful voice and guitar work without the "glitz", check out Eva Cassidy's "over the rainbow", and read her story. You noticed. Up until he met Suzy, Chet Atkins' favorite singer was Tammy Wynette.
Then he heard someone with perfect tone, pitch and phrasing with a full three-octave
vocal range who could leap from one end of the scale to the other without 'hitchin' up
to go'. She always hits each note dead-center, and as Chet said, "she ain't hard to look at, neither!"
Her greatest vocal performance is her 1990 version ( not the new 2010 one ) of 'The First Noel'.

Don't get me wrong she has a beautiful voice, and she is a beautiful woman which never hurts your appeal. But John wrote it, feels it, and you can't copy that soulful voice. Check out John's "Have alittle faith in me" for a better example. He's also a much more accomplished musician (guitar, piano etc.) Also for a truly beautiful voice and guitar work without the "glitz", check out Eva Cassidy's "over the rainbow", and read her story. Hey Ro, don't take things so serious! the LOL was not meant as you took it. Just laughing at my comment. But if John was such a bad singer I guess vocalists like Springsteen, Huey Lewis, JJ Jackson, John Fogarty, John Mellencamp, Danny Mccafferty, Lowell George and most roots rock artists suck too. Hey silkat2, sorry if I took it the wrong way, but I read your comment to the wife and she took it the same way I did. You bring up a very good point about the other vocalists you mentioned. I happen to like the artists you mentioned. I've seen Huey Lewis four times and even got to meet him and the guys after the show. When I get a chance, I'm going to check out some other songs by John. This time, I'll be more open minded and not so quick to judge.

No problem, I'm sure we both have alot of things to experience in the music world. I think it's harder to gain respect as a vocalist if your not a born saprano or alto. I know John's experienced alot of tragedy in his life, which is where he gets his "soul" from. Check out "Feels like Rain" and the upbeat "child of the wild blue yonder". No harm, no foul! peace

John Hiatt is excellent, but as John himself said in an interview, it was Suzy Bogguss singing this song that enabled him to pay his bills.

I'm afraid you're wrong again,as usual, pattismovies! Suzy's version is way better than John's! And, it took the late, great Jeff Healy, to make a hit out of John's "Angel Eyes" because John's version sounds exactly like picard32 said,"Like he's going to the bathroom!" You should hear John try to sing either song live picard32! It sounds even worse!
