  • @supersaxsonic nice

  • i bet you these guys believ in evolution

  • @The300MightySpartans And if they do?

  • @andyman01869 i know lots of people who believe in evolution, and these guys have similar thjoughts they are related. i think its neat to listen to them share things that make you go "oooooooh" or "that is so cooooool"! i love this channel

  • 2:23 drool? o.O?

  • @Suxicekk rude

  • 1 guy sucks at math.

  • >forever alone

  • Of course your example of a friend numbers is that they are not equal. So your other half will not be equal to you. So you are a sexist...

  • What about Amicable Fractions? 1/27 and 1/37 maybe! (Look at their decimal values, they just cant stop thinking about eachother!)

  • goodness, he's so cute at 3:07, after which Brady said "Awww" :)

  • I'd take the other half!!!

  • @gaymerguy gay?

    ^^

  • How do you like them apples?

  • @FlamezagKing This deserves more likes.

  • @TheExaltedPheonix How about root 2 and root -1?

  • 70, the smallest weird number.

    (BoC)

  • Very Interesting.....this video should have been posted as a valentine's day special..he, he

  • That reminds me of a project Euler problem I should probably finish....

  • Does this work in other bases?

  • @axelasdf An amicable number isn't determined by properties of the base used to represent the number. The divisors of a number will be the same regardless of what base you're using, as will the sum of the divisors. For example, the divisors of 15 are 1, 3 and 5, which add up to 9 (base 10); the divisors of 1111 are 1, 11, 101, which add up to 1001 (base 2). Notice 15 (10) = 1111 (2), 9 (10) = 1001 (2), etc. This is true in general.

  • Math can be romantic :D

  • Find numbers that hate and wanna kill each other. Maybe 'pi' and 'e' is a good one.

  • Perfect numbers are fixed points for the iterative "sum of divisors" function, Amicable Numbers are two-cycles. Primes are dead-ends. Are there any other, higher order cycles known? Any really long paths known?

  • @NekuraCa Look up "sociable number". Yes really long paths are known.

  • FOREVER 220 :(

  • UFO at 2:23

  • Something I just realized: perfect numbers are amicable with themselves. Maybe we shouldn't think of them as perfect but instead as narcissistic.

  • I was expecting to see forever alone at the end lol

  • I'm a 284 and I found my 220. :3

  • My birthday is 2/20. now i have to look for someone with a birthday of 284 ლ(ಠ益ಠლ)

  • @thefuzzyonee Then you'd better date an Euopean person as in Europe data are dd-mm. So find someone born on 28th of April.

  • @WhatforNameIsThat You sir, are a genius!

  • @thefuzzyonee

    Ryzie123's birthday is April 28th.

  • This is retarded

  • 220's can be creepy at times, a byproduct of "forever alone" syndrome.

  • You should do a video on Googol and Googolplex. That would be interesting.

  • I'd well be up for some amicable arithmetic with Dr Grimes... ;)

  • @justtryharder Why not?

  • 1089 is one of my favourite numbers. Anyone agree?

  • That's the story of my life... I'm an 1184 looking for my 1210... a sodium looking for my chlorine... a proton looking for my electron... I know the name of every element... yet I remain unpaired...

  • These ideas are really interesting but completely useless.

  • Its 1184 and 1210 :)

  • lmao rejected!

  • Bless.

  • I love these videos, thanks.

  • @codlgaez - Hahahah :) I see what you did there

  • @supergsx Who says they always have to be useful? As long as they're interesting. And they may prove to be more useful to something that will be discovered later on. You just never know =D

  • @masterlink101 It's a slim chance, but I do enjoy the videos.

  • Time to seduce some nerds

  • This one is really good! Thank You

  • 6 is friendly with itself

  • "Im a 220 still looking for my 284" SO CUTE

  • I'm loving this channel more and more each day!

  • Forever Alone...

  • You look like Shawn from Shawn of the Dead.

  • It actually infuriates me how they always use really shitty quality pens and paper

  • Funny how there's only one negative vote: @AlphaCentauri24

  • this is awesome. how many pairs are there? have any larger ones been discovered?

  • 2:00 still a better love story than twilight

  • Forever alone !

  • I'd be his 284

  • I request the incomputable numbers

  • I would make a video about 1729... First, it's the smallest number expressable with 2 different Sums, second there is an interesting connection to Ramanujan( and Hardy)... I really like this channel!!

  • You need to do one on ABC triples

  • Im LOVIN this channel!!! keep it rolling!

  • Brady . . . you political mastermind. You know we would love a break in the pattern. Giving us all these single-number videos, and then, oh! You know what would be cool? Two god damn numbers in the same video. Oh. No problem.

    <3

  • is there gonna be one based on a fraction

  • nerd love

  • do a video about ZERO! :)

  • @okmasko If they did that they would have to divide by zero, and that would turn all of Nottingham into a bottomless chasm.

  • 2.07

    ;_;

  • again amicable numbers.....man this hurts my mind

  • so?

  • Can you do 23?

  • @electrona What makes 23 so special?

  • Dave Gorman might have an explanation for you not finding your 284. Find the video "Maths - Dave Gorman Stand Up"

  • You don't look as gingeriffic today... :(

  • I'm a 220 still looking for my 284. A single mathematician's personal ad.

  • devisers = factors?

  • @Duplooytim yep!

  • "thank you for

  • This is definitely going to get you some ladies.

  • Singingbanana? On my numberphile? It's more awesome than you think.

  • This will be my new pick-up line: I'm 220, will you be my 284?

  • It's fun to see videos like this once in a while, and I really love your channels Brady. However for this particular channel I think time will be better spent talking about examples that make math so useful for science and for any other number of applications. Just my 2 cents.

  • @cristianfcao that sounds like a very "worthy" and noble series of videos... and I'm sure we'll have some films along those lines.

appreciate your 2 cents and interested in all feedback!

  • "so you would wear one talisman, and you wold give the other one to your liver" 1:45

  • I HAVE THAT KNIFE IN MY KITCHEN

  • @KajsSwedishMeatBalls so do I!

  • The B stands for butt, right?

  • Both Thâbit ibn Kurrah and Euler had rules for finding some amicable numbers, but are the amicable pairs finite or infinite? Do we know?

  • don't worry james, there is a 220 and a 284 for everyone out there. Plus i'm loving these videos both on numberphile and on your personal channel, top stuff and very interesting. Thanks for taking the time to make them :)

  • Keep it up!

  • Damn, this is what happens when I go into a video late. I miss all the action :) Great video, this provides great ideas for Valentine's Day haha.

  • Actually, in my opinion, these vids are really not bad, but they are a bit too general for me (so far), I like and prefer these in depth vids (as those of singingbanana) but I am patiently waiting for some of this kind (which you had promised, hadn't you?).

  • @JumpingNoCrime there will indeed be depth... and there will be just fluffy trivia and fun... and there will be pure numbers... and there will be culture... and history... and whatever else I find interesting!!!

And I am quickly learning I will get flogged for all of them! :)

  • @numberphile You will get flogged for anything you do, but keep doing it! I love these videos! (15 bumfit is my least favorite but that's ok.)

  • To hear about properties of numbers like this on Project Euler and then seeing them in more detail again on this channel is really interesting. It's fun to know some uses for the numbers I'm spending my time calculating.

  • Dr. James Grime is adorable. Thanks for sharing this info!

  • great video! keep up the great work.

  • If you guys ever put these number patterns and alghorithms, I'd be stuck on the first level. :X

  • these videos are awesome. Thanks for putting them out here, and teaching everybody so much!

  • @jddevos1 no worries... glad you like them!

  • aww Dr.James Grime is so cute when he smiles.. why wouldn't anyone want to be his 284?

  • This might be interesting, but it's incredibly useless :D

  • Another interesting tidbit: In the Bible, Jacob gives 200 female goats and 20 male goats; 200 female sheep (ewes) and 20 male sheep (rams) to Esau in order to appease him. Rabbi Nachshon Gaon (9th century) teaches that Jacob gave part of an amicable pair- 220- (misparim neeahuvim in Hebrew), because that is how you get someone to like you.

  • "I'm a 220 still looking for my 284." That's my new motto.

  • What exactly was AlphaCentauri24 expecting?

    Anyway, great video Brady. Thanks!

  • I love your videos but the sound of the markers sends chills down my spine lol

  • This one was kinda interesting, but is it possible to get on an higher level with this stuff, a bit more complicated stuff

  • I'll be your 284! ;)

  • I absolutely love your videos!

  • do the golden ratio

  • @nmuller789 we will!

  • 0:34 can you spot his spit on the board.

  • @nyce2meetu Yes, and at 1:18 he wipes it with his finger.

  • Make a video about Happy Numbers!!

  • Neat :) This guy's got to be an excellent entertainer!

However, it would be great if you could use a portable whiteboard, instead of those huge sheets of paper.

    Have a great day, everybody!

  • Forced to enjoy 8128 alone instead. :(

My girlfriend is a computer program with artificial intelligence. I think she might appreciate this.

  • @TheLoonwolf Oh my Karen. Oh my Karen. Oh, my computer wife Karen.

  • @kargelr Is she related to Kari? Might be her sister.

  • I know why he dont have an 284 girl... This guy spit's all over the place LOL. 2:23 or 0:34...

  • 284 is the best - considering I'm born on the 28th of April :)

  • @Ryzie123 Now you just need to find someone born on the 22nd of... Uh, nevermind.

  • @codlgaez haha..what about 20th of Feb?

  • Numberphile is awesome

  • @Wtfcantheal thank you

  • I love these videos! Dont ever stop making them! :-D

  • I really despise these bad markers.

  • D'awww

  • @AlphaCentauri24 we may have lost @AlphaCentauri24 but for those who remain, there will be much more to our upcoming videos and some rather unusual takes on some numbers (which will cost us even more subscribers - ha ha)

  • @numberphile First Kim Jong-il and now @AlphaCentauri24. The world is doomed! :'(

  • @numberphile I really enjoy this format to be honest! Keep them comming!

  • @numberphile You will never be able to get me to unsubscribe! Partly because I'm too lazy to click the button. But all great physicists are. Lazy and absentminded... What was I talking about again?

  • @DaTux91 stay lazy if that means we keep you!

  • @numberphile Don't worry, I will. If you keep throwing us these awesome videos, I'll remain lazy as a domesticated cat. :)

  • @numberphile Do the rules that some numbers have. Especially 34.

  • @AlphaCentauri24 I agree with you man, my life is filled with times where I walk into furniture shops and ALL they have is just furniture. I often think they should have brass bands in furniture shops because they will make it more interesting. Often disappointed I walk out of shops when all they have to offer is exactly what they say they have in them. Can we be friends?

  • @AlphaCentauri24 they has been only 8 videos. Maybe you should stay a little longer just in case. Videos improve over time you know you criticism is going to help them.

  • AWW I'd take the other half <3

  • geeks, gettin all excited about numbers and things that have no meaning... well, maybe they have a meaning, but they dont have an obvious meaning...

  • @Zee96969696 ... and you would prefer a gibbering simpleton who only cares about whats in front of them if its obvious enough for them to immediately comprehend ? ... what a boring existence.

  • @Zee96969696 I think the word is appreciation. Either that or understanding.

  • Oh so that's why my marriage didn't work!

  • yep....life of a mathematician is rough!

Awesome stuff, keep it up! (Y)

  • Y don't u do it on Valentine's Day?

  • Like a boss.

  • That was.... pretty awkward

  • lol

  • forever alone.

  • @ethoxyethaan LOL

  • @ethoxyethaan Are you kidding, he's completely adorable.

  • I will be a great math guy in the future(after comparing the hand writing of me and singingbanana

  • Please know this joke is not meant to be negative (and it's not factual as a metaphor).

Chemists do pair-bonding, physicists do magnetic or gravitational bonding, mathematicians don't do bonding.

    :)

  • @gulllars They may not use the word bonding but 1+1=2 is the same or combining like terms 1X+1X=2X or maybe 2<3 haha I was bored had to reply.

  • 8th

  • People see even numbers as females. Since 220 and 284 are even numbers does that mean that... you know. :D

Just a thought, are there any odd-even or odd-odd pairs of amicable numbers? Are there an infinite pair(s) of amicable numbers?

  • @PullarBearBear OMG I was thinking the same thing about 220 and 284 both being even.

  • Damn it! aboood578 messed it up...

  • @KittySN LOL, i love his accent and the way he said "but" :P

  • I'll take the 284

  • And I'm 4th. Let's keep going until we're at 284! ... :p

  • BUT

  • wooow am I 3rd?? :P

  • hey, I'm second :-)

  • Wooo I'm the first view so exciting.

    Excellent vid, as usual.
