There were drugs whose molecular structure had two terminals where hydrogen ions were substituted with deuterium (heavy hydrogen, or D2). One such product was invented by Dr. Shulgin. It resembled mescaline, but its subjective effects in the human being were not as pronounced. It was determined that the enzymes which transform ordinary hydrocarbons into metabolites could not act upon this chemical as well. Heavy water also sinks when it freezes unlike regular water which would float as ice does.
