In the UK it definitely is the sign of drug dealer but I didn't know in Canada as it's the first time I've seen it here since I arrived two years ago.
@Pubgoer I've never heard of it being an indication of a drug dealer; if you watch the video, you'll see there are hundreds of shoes on trees, hanging from wires ... this is outside a small town, and I just can't see the entire town being drug dealers, lol !!
It is my understanding that a pair of shoes draped over a hydro line in a residential area indicates a drug dealer location ....Anyone else heard that ?
Obviously at some point the hydro guys have to come with their cherry picker and remove the shoes, or the line is going to break with the weight of them. We'll drive by one time and there are six pairs hanging on the wires. Next time, no shoes. Next time, three pairs....
Yes, wizardeal, that's what I thought a shoe tree was too! Now I'm thinking - if those trees ever fall, how are they going to cut them up, with all the nails in them??
I think it is a great idea: Clothes you can't wear anymore or shoes, boots etc you hang them up e.g in a tree and anyone can take them home; recycling.
But I think the shoe tree started as a joke and more and more people added their old shoes to those trees.
Well, the problem with that is - almost all of the shoes are NAILED to the trees and posts! So they're not re-usable. But I've noticed since I posted my video that there are others like it, so this isn't a one-time thing. It seems to be a fad!
While I can't speak for other people, we have a family shoe tree. At the end of each camping season, we hang the shoes we grew out of, wore out, etc. As we look at them years later the memories come flooding back... its also sort of fun
Hmm, so it's a camping tradition... Maybe that's the way it is with these trees. Assuming that the people doing it drive by the trees on their way to their cottage too. Maybe they don't have trees of their own??

Now i thought a shoe tree was a piece of wood with a bunch of protruding pieces to hand shoes on that people put in their closet
