I just bought a book, read it front to back, then started over at the beginning, starting with reading notes, and practicing the first scale of E.

ive never had a teacher and can play pretty good now, or at least i can keep learning, having 'mastered' the easy stuff. buy a guitar, watch a movie on youtube how to play guitar, anything really, so u know how to hold it, pick an easy song, search for its tabs on google, then open a "how to play 'name of the song' " video and youtube and you are all set ;p books are pretty useless, all you have to do is practice, everyday. good luck
