You beat me to it. Just as a side note, another thing that can be done is changing the plane angle on a 4-rotor engine to 0, 45, 180, 225 to get the sound of the 2011 Yamaha R1 crossplane. Fun stuff isn't it!
Flat-plane V8s breathe better and deliver more power than the cross-plane design favored in the US. However, they're less well-balanced so they've traditionally been limited to small displacements to keep vibration from being a problem at high revs.
Thanks for the comments - The vid was recorded on a little Digitl camers, so the noisy sound is exagerated, it's not that bad in real life. But the AJP V8 is not a refined engine. It's based on a Formula 1 engine design, it's a Flat Plane crank V8, totally different from the classic 'yank' V8, so a very different sound altogether.
the tappets have been set correctly, they are done every 12k.
@jensencerb Yeh, the sound, think of it as two in-line fours rather than a complete V8 that you find with cross-plane types. Lotus V8 is the same. good stuff.
that is a stunning looking cerb, especially in white with matching wheels, cant the tappets be adjusted to get that noise away,my integra has solid lifters and they get adjusted every 20k,iv done mine to the spec honda clearnces and it sounds better and still runs the same.go on take the plunge.great car m8!!
@zpunout, in case you run out of TVR videos, the Ferrari F355, 360 Modena, and F430 all have a flat plane crankshaft as well as V8 indy cars.
I am planning a 55 Chevy build, and I love the sound of a flat plane V8. Hopefully I can custom build either a small block chevy V8 or a Cadillac Northstar V8 with a flat plane crank.
@travelbytommy Thanks for the infos. That would be very interesting about putting a flat plane crank into a chevy or the like. Do you think there may be any problems with second order vibrations?
There will definately be second order vibrations, but there are steps that can be taken to reduce or eliminate them. Unlike a 2nd order on a 4 cylinder which goes up and down, a flat crank v8 would be side to side. This can be reduced by reducing the stroke of the engine, using lighter rotating assemblies, or using 2 counter rotating balance shafts. So to answer your question, yes they would be a problem for a stock engine, but the problem can be fixed with some changes.
@Nickthebassist01 it shouldn't make a difference as long as it is well maintained. I have a Corvette Z06 that, while it is garaged, I drive it in the snow and even take it up in the mountains almost every week in the winter to go skiing. Not driving for long periods could do damage through condensation and what not, but as long as you drive it and clean it, it should be fine.
that sounds absolutely horrible when cold!

Just so you know, a small block "yank" V8 can be fitted with a flat plane crank. It's been done by quite a few people. :)

sounds like piston slap from forged pistons, wouldn't surprise me if smoked a little on startup too.

@creamyfilling102 without the foreigners you wouldn't have a V8 mate. It was first patented in 1902 in France lmfao ;)

that's one great engine... pity it sounds like a diesel when cold.... but when it warms up........ uhu

must be the lifters bleeding the oil out at night

sounds heavier......like piston slap?
marek0086 3 years ago
I'd put money that the bottom end is forged, so quite possibly piston slap.
