wtf why didnt they just leave it where it was. history is not about just one 'thing' that could be moved from here to there. its also the spirit of the place and the atmosphere there. to remember the history you need it all, so you can stand there, take a time travel in your mind and let the history roll. till now i found it always very odd that ppl think they can move even fragile and ancient buildings against all rules of gravity and destiny.
As a life member of Columbian Hose (Eng 132) it broke my heart to see the old station fall. My hear goes out to the members of Centennial Hose on this most tragic event.
I hope that someone has blueprints by which to take the bricks from the old station and re-build it as it was when it first got built. Perhaps someone could find them or maybe even has them and would be willing to copy them and go from there.
Salem, Mass. is planning to do the same thing: move an historic Baptist church to make way for a huge ugly monolithic courthouse complex. I understand they were supposed to use the same company to move the church but I haven't verified that. Let's see what they do now....
Open your eyes. You can hear in the background when they say pull the building. This was a controlled demolition. It fell so fast like nothing was stopping it. The government did this because...oh wait..wrong video. never mind.
Thankfully no one was hurt! I do have to say that I am terribly saddened by this. I practically grew up in that building as my father, Ken Benedict was a very active member of Centennial Hose.
@mercuriocs That sucks... I remember saying that It should be saved.. Later my wife tells me they have plans to save it.. I was happy but you know the rest.. I have a pic from earlier that year of the place.. No more buildings around it.
EPIC moving FAIL.
saw it on smash cuts! great show.
It makes ya wonder if that place was safe to be occupied if they had succesfuly moved it.

I love the line, "The cause of the collapse is under investigation"
Ummmmm it is called gravity. Maybe the Peekskill City Council will study this "gravity" thing!

Wow, this is so sad. I too grew up in this building. My parents were both members.
You can't understand it if you didn't know the place but that old building had so much spirit and character. It is a very sad loss.
I am glad they at least tried to save it though.
Rest in peace Centennial Hose. The Dock Rats will all miss you.

Sorry for the loss guy's but look at it this way.
No one was hurt and I am sure the contractor was insurred so make him rebuild it with all the old bricks then move the trucks back in.

Pretty sad, but very predictable when there is no roof to give it some strength.
Fortunate there were no injuries and even without the building, the memories still live on.
