when i try to go to the external flash func. settings menu it shows me a message saying "this menu cannot be displayed. incompatible flash or flash's power is turned off" what should i do?
@javflo2204 Oh thats happened to me, you just need to power off the flash, take it off the camera, and clean the contacts on the hot shoe on both the camera and the flash (with a tissue or cloth) and re seat the flash back in the shoe.
on the camera? The camera can be in any mode, PASM or any of the automatic modes.
Most people would set the flash mode to "E-TTL", but you can manually set the flash in "M". "Multi" is for stroboscopic flash mode. Where you set the power and how many flashes per second (Hz)
"E" or External thyristor mode, you can only access as a custom function.
I own a 40d and 580ex is this also possible with my setup? As far as i know and can find it's only possible to set the ETTL II and flash exposure compansation... Or do i just need an firmware update?
Do you mean with the built-in flash on the 40d? (or any other EOS SLR) no...
You'll either need a PC-sync Cable, Off camera shoe cord (OC-E3) or the speedlite transmitter (ST-E2) or another 550ex, 580ex or 580exII to trigger the flash off camera.
thanks, i also have nikon and couple of SB800 and i'm able to do it w/out the need for any transmitter or commander attached to the cam... only the built-in flash does the trick via CLS systems. hopefully canon do the same thing soon.
i think we just can controlled the flash within the panel.... i just know that the camera 40D can control it also... my 40D is on service place right now... so i can't test my flash... now i use it in 400d it works well and great... thx 4 the video

People dont waist your money on this flash totally over priced... Canon ripped you idiots off 1 time already on the 580EX now they want to rip you off again on a 580EXII because they added a sync socket? Mindless amateurs.
Yeah! Of course! And you, as the biggest Flash expert in the whole world should have the right to call people idiots if they want to buy something you don't agree, right?
Hey Domenus.. Feel free to continue to be a chump.. Its because of guys like you I been making it for 17 years.. SO please by all means buy that 580EXII
Yep.. I'm a chump because I got an flash.. so much better than you that are an stupid idiot that think you're better than other people and your opinion is the only one that matters. It's because of idiots like you, that can't leave others with their choices that many people end up giving up photography.
Now, since you are doing it for 17 years and is the all mighty lord of the lighting, why don't you just become an consultant on "what to buy"? Mr. "Only I know what's good"...
Well... theres not really much to see there, theres other videos that show the 580ex II, or just Google image it. If you want to see the 40d controlling the flash in action, ...Its just the flash of the camera as it takes a picture.
I wanted to show the user interface for flash control in the 40d, since there wasn't a video of it.
O ok Sorry mate, I was bit angry at something else when i was saying that. Sorry. Can you do a video of like the controlls on the flash stuff you can do with it, I don't have a camera my self and love looking at the things. Heh heh.

Can I manually control this flahs with my canon 50d?
loco039 2 years ago
Through the flash control menu? Yep you sure can!
KaiAdin 2 years ago
step by step to do canon 40d to control speedlite 580ex II.
First, have to turn on 580 then M or E-ttl?
Somehow, when i go to 40d manu to set exter flash. the message i got is flash power not on.....
could you do one step by step to show how?
swim2003summer 2 years ago
ah ok!.
1. Turn on the 580EX II
2. Set it to any mode (M/ETTL/Multi)
3. Mount it on your 40d's hot shoe
4. Navigate to the Flash Control menu, it should work.
(You might need to make sure the contacts are Clean on the Flash and the Camera hot shoe)

i had hard time to understand.
first, 580ex ii needs to be on and which mode?

Ah, sorry nope. You need the new speedlites, the 580exII 430exII or the 270ex.
A firmware update wont work because its the *flash* that needs to support the camera/flash communication.

can you fire the flash off camera w/out the need for triggering device just like the nikon CLS? thanks.

this guy doesn't know what he's doing. Look how he plays around with the zoom setting numbers, then he sets it back to "auto"
heyrob69 3 years ago
Well I had just bought the flash when I made the video, playing around with it is a good way to learn how to use it...
Anyway 'auto' is the best setting to use, as the flash unit automatically zooms to match your zoom setting on the SLR.
KaiAdin 3 years ago
yea, for me its easier to use the panel on the flash itself to control it, but you can use the flash control menu on the 40d if you want.

Nope, their grayed out unless the 580exII is detected (ie It must be turned on)
Though you can access the pop-up flash at any time.
KaiAdin 3 years ago
