For those who don't really want to do it the old fashioned way (although there is a lot of joy in doing it that way) you can download the app called google sky.. its amazingly accurate and saves a whole bunch of time..
@TycheTheLlama I think it's the big dipper. But I could be mistaken with your weired english constellation names. :) In german the constellation shown is called "großer Wagen" (big carriage) or "großer Bär" (big bear). So its something with "big" in it.
@ELuhn that's a piss-poor judgement made from excessive extrapolation. You should work for the MET office! I genuinely feel sorry for people who make videos anthropomorphising dumb animals, almost as if they can't relate to their fellow humans very well.
oh, btw, I don't know how Ross saw anything through that scope the way he bumped the shit out of it and took it out of alignment. This is how to use a telescope when you can't be bothered
To add, Ross must be not that interested in his scope to not have read about four lines in the easy setup manual showing complete novices (like me) how to align this device.
I got a celestron 8SE and a host of lenses I've had for over 3 months and have not had one night of clear skies :(
but ! when you search google and you see a picture of jupiter I always thought "yeah yeah, photoshopped, touched up" but trust me, it's not ! it's just how it shows up in google images (only smaller if course)
Professor Brian Cox and the comedian Dara O'Briain are fantastic, however I wish O'Brian would stfu at most times and let the master Cox tell us in his own fantastic and interesting way than keep being interrupted !
The UK should most definately have more of these programs - it opens your mind.
The telescope he has in that shed was a celestron SE maybe 6 inch. Piss easy to operate and all automated. Point it to even one star and it will align.
ball of gas...ball of gas..hot rock...cold rock etc. Is the fact that they are so large and so far away supposed to make this interesting? Apart from use as navigation it's dullsville.
"As I looked out into the night sky, across all those infinite stars it made me realize how insignificant they are" -- Peter Cook
for a talk show host and on millions of pounds a year, you would think that the bbc would employ another guy who can at least pronounce his words correctly. jonathon WOSS is about as funny as s**t on my shoe.
Did you know when you see light from space you are litterally looking back in time so you could be looking at the light from a star but the star is no longer there but the remainder of its light is still reaching earth.. amazing eh?
@spress97 because before the live show thay give you a lil taster. thats how you can have a preview before a live show. thay dont make it up as thay go along.. still have a scriped to go with.
@spress97 you use video clips from the program they filmed and editted 6 weeks before, the live part was Dara and crew talking crap to the camera the best part of the whole program was filming with the TShed Low light camera and Bosch Aegis UFLED lighting.

For those interested all of the night vision footage on the BBC Stargazing programmes was captured using the TShed Lunax Starlight HD camera.

@blenderpanzi Thanks! Don't know what I was thinking. The big dipper is part of the great bear (ursa major) in English.

At 1:52 I noticed a very weak aligning on the planisphere. I think you will find Nov 17th has a direct path to Uranus.
