  • I love this guy, he has such a great imagination!

  • you fools!!!, are you still debating about Guillermo been Latino and not Anglosaxon or European?? why is it than people think than only a kind of people can have talent... haven't you learn after 10,000 years to see trough the skin. By the way the more many he has the lees i like the film from Guillermo, thus i like Cronos, skip helboy and mimic, and really love pan's and devilsBb.

  • I just saw the movie and checked up the cast. I loved it all. I loved the movie, even though it was in spanish and couldn't understand, i had subtitles and the expressions on the actors faces we're enough too. Love this director, And i can care less if he were a white mexican or a white european so drop that convo people. Anyways movie was perfection for me, looking forward to some more movies from him.. Greetings from Hawaii.

  • I just love how people turn the comment space into an entire cultural debate :)

and i also hate, and agree that it is the "Cholo Mexican Raza" that always live in the US and seem to leave Mexico whitout learning any history but carrying a false image of Mexico the ones who makes us look bad all arround the world.

  • Del toro has a unique accent. He doesnt sound like a Mexican at all

  • he looks like Micheal Moore

  • Lean nuestra reseña de “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark” en nuestro sitio en español… pero cúbranse primero con las sábanas y miren debajo de la cama!

  • Since when did he turn mexican? I thought all this time he was spanish!

  • @veronica9956 well hes of spanish descent since hes white but he was born there.

  • @thunderheart226 lol this is stupid... so u'r are Englis?

  • @chuyorey what is stupid? and no im not English not even european

  • @thunderheart226 u say if Guillermo aren't brown Mexican then are a full Spanish...

  • @chuyorey yes mexicans arent spanish just like americans arent english. spanish means european from spain....like english means from england.....if he isnt brown then he isnt aztec he is a white guy of probably 100% spanish ancestry.

  • @thunderheart226 yes then u'r a guy citizen of usa with 100% English blood... (actualy u have to know than in Latinamerica is rare a pure white even't a white guy can have mix blood, except for a few percentage.. we call them Criollos, they look like whites but they not have ever pure spanish blood..

  • @chuyorey im not white ..many whites in latin america came recently like WW2 Italians in argentia germans in brazil. etc. most whites in america have black or native american blood too like johnny depp and cameron diaz(white latina) so who said anything about pure OBAMA isnt pure but u still call him black right?

  • @thunderheart226 H\Jhonny deep is not White his is mix a Mestizo.. (half French half Native like latino)

  • @chuyorey latino isnt a race not all latinos are mestizo sammy sosa celia cruz arod are mulattoes and latinos. cameron diaz charlie sheen are also latinos and they are white..mestizos only make up like 30+% of latin america whites and mulatto/blacks make up the other 70%

  • @thunderheart226 i know that but latino in 21 century have a diferent sense..also is a movement and a stream (is the Latinoamerican) i know that in latinamerica we have pure natives africans & European.. & also the mixed ppl, but all our culture is a mixing thing & because we are pride for our mixed culture & legacy cause evrething is part of us we fell like one so that's for we are latinos not race but like one culture...

  • @chuyorey latino isnt one culture mexicans and domincans have almost nothing in-common except for spanish and religion. most countries in latin america have different cultures a brazilian has no idea what Guatemalan food is. bolivian music isnt the same as puerto rican music its like america new york culture is nothing like texas culture. and cajun culture is nothing new jersey culture.i dont get how u are 1 culture the same way america isnt 1 culture.

  • @thunderheart226 naive... ofcourse everyone we are unique culture in we have iunique countrys but when we speak about the latino Culture yes we are reference to all our cultures, & yes meaby we are not so close to dominicans on some thing but if u search in othr things u will find that we have million times more comun with every latino than the rest of the world u must open you'r eyes, then u must understand than in Latin America we have many cultures but all are Latin American just like...

  • @thunderheart226 ...In Mexico we have many cultures that they either have nothin in comoun with another in the same country.. like yaquis with mayas or aztecs the jarochos,or the mestizo Mexican culture... but they are all Mexicans.. diferent music in each region this is our legacy we are a mixed multicultural land, the native of peru are the brothers of the natives of mexico the africans of cuban brazil & mexico are also brothers is like knits like a acobweb in a circle

  • @thunderheart226 more than a culture is a very old socialist stream for the right of the indigenus ppl & African descent latinos... search it somewhere u can find the latinoamericaism in the muralism (Art) or mives like "el Viaje" from the director Fernando E. Solanas, many ppl make part of this movement like frida kalo, Jorge González Camarena, diego rivera, che guevara, simon bolivar...

  • @thunderheart226 He can be something else lol. Spaniards aren't the only white Europeans that migrated to Mexico and mixed with Mexicans.

  • @58skippy ur right he can be of northern european stock from america.maybe a white texan who moved to mexico in the 1800s.ive seen really nordic mexicans with red hair it confused my friend lol.

  • He is like the mexican version of Peter Jackson.

  • if anyone is annoyed cuz this movie aint in english even though they supply subtitles, i will assume that they lack imagination and enjoyment in reading

  • There's no such things as a Mexican race. Mexico's ethnicity's are based on Latin European, Semitic, and Amerindian origin for the most part.

Pick up a book for once!

I know my roots. I'm not one of those delusional Viva Mexico Cabrones %100 Aztec idiots. I'm Olmec/Hebrew on my fathers side and Yaoqi/Spanish on my mothers. I figure the more roots you have, the less likely you are to be an inbreed.

Thats why I support interracial marrige.

  • @xxDanielTM93xx Yeah I hate the "%100 Aztec pride" shit as it reflects poorly on Meixcan society. Also, it's usually American's with Mexican ancestry who chant this stuff. Even pure native Mexicans aren't Aztec, but some other group entirely. And Mexico's other 2nd biggest group is European/Asian(Lebanese,Syrian,Israel etc...) So this Cholo/Aztec mentality is embarassing and flawed deeply and leaves Mexicans from Mexico(Del Toro, S.Hayek, Bernal) scratching their heads at these claims.

  • @metalmosh6 Good finally someone agrees! There are no pure Mexicans. Just like there isn't pure Americans, Britons, and Australians. Its A friggin nationality!

Stupid Cholo people right! All this "Viva La Raza" shit! If you want to see some real 100% Aztecs, go to the reservation village near the rivers outside DF! The one river with the floral boats. They're real Aztecs. Alot of them hate Mexicans. Yes it's always Mexicans living in the US who are like that! That's why people don't like us!

  • @xxDanielTM93xx Agreed, the "Raza" stuff makes me cringe. I guess that's why alot of Mexico have a negative view of Chicanos, and Americans have that same view but wrongfully slap that label on all of Mexico's people(which is why Mexicans hate that in turn). There's no problem being proud of your heritage, but atleast pick up a book and learn about Mexico's diversity, your family's ancestry and not assume Aztec identity(if your not) or develop a siege/militaristic mentality while your at it.

  • wow it's hard to believe he's Mexican, he doesnt really look Mexican to me, he looks British or German

  • @gatheringleaves thats cuz mexican isnt a race look neither is american. most ppl forget that europeans brought the spanish language to the americas the same way Europeans brought english to north america.you would be surprised how many white latinos there are its about 35% of latin america thats a BIG portion

  • vean nuestra entrevista exclusiva en video con guillermo del toro y lean la reseña de "don't be afraid..", su nueva produccion, en nuestro portal en español!

  • Just to give an example. Louis C.K., the best comic working today, is Mexican.

He was born and raised in Mexico and didn't even speak english until he was about 8.

  • Why the hell are the two top-rated comments on here about race? Why don't we talk about something relevant such as Del Toro's great movie, or the interesting insight he provides through this interview?

  • @ManInBones01 because (sadly but honestly) Mexicans aren't really known to make mainstream/successful movies/music/books, so when we do make something great, it's something to point out and be proud of :) Less drug lords, more Guillermo's :)

  • @DeeBlount20 Actually, Mexico's entertainment world is famous through out Latin America, and to some extent Spain. Though it's not something that appeals to the US simply because they run the business. To be fair also, any countries entertainment media business is modeled after America's, thus I get your viewpoint.

  • @ManInBones01 Because you are watching a YouTube video.

  • Yes, i mean we are human after all, stop racism !

  • All of the comments here are about what he looks like or where he's from, who gives a fuck? He's an awesome director. Who cares what shade his skin color is? I care about the movies he makes.

  • people he is mexican, he was born in mexico, he was raised in mexico!

  • Guillermo is an amazing director

    saludos desde latin TV

  • @latinotelevision I agree. He's kind of like Tim Burton with the type of horror movies he's created. I wonder if they've met each other or might do a film together. That would be pretty cool. :)

I personally hope to get the chance to work with him in a dark fantasy film someday.

  • interviewer is pretty awful. Not really listening to guillermo and obviously got the wrong message from the film. It wasn't about scaring children into doing the right thing... at all. it had such a deeper message than that and guillermo explains this well.

  • hellboy and blade aren't my thing, neither are fantasies but this film is wow, art.

  • why do they look like demon monsters???? alice in wonderland is 100 times more realistic with fantasy what going on this movie

i mean come on, she eats the food on the table, she stands there like a idiot, she could have used the sword e.g "fail"

  • this guy is my favorite fantasy director working today. he has the most interesting imagination.

  • @93johnk i seen way better imagination movies then you can possibly imagine then this crap movie.

  • I love Guillermo Del Toro's whole aesthetic and his kindness to characters. I thought he nailed the whole little girl character--some men don't have a clue and think little girls are just softer little boys. But little girls are often motivated by completely different things, and Del Toro knows it. Plus, I love GDT's conscious manipulation of myth, and his perception of how awful childhood can be---his was no picnic. Didn't his grandmother have him exorcized twice???

  • @metalmosh6

lol @ tea-party convention. I embrace brown pride, even though I'm not brown, I'm still Mexican. and yea I get mistaken for French lol. my family comes from Monterey, nuevo Leon

  • he'll direct and write an animated movie called Trollhunters, to be produced by DreamWorks Animation SKG, that's nice

  • @Chesterball - same here, I'm darker than normal, but I'm still white and I'm mexican. All that means is my family immigrated from Spain to Mexico. I'm the first member of my family to not be born in Mexico

  • @blueterrior Yes, Im tired with the "brown pride" chicanos, they are clueless that Mexico has the 3rd biggest white population of Latin America, behind Brazil and Argentina. I mean, Mexico was a Spanish colony, then part of the French Empire, and the Mexican empire, between those times europeans migrated to Mexico. My mom's family is white Mexican, you couldn't tell my grandma from a Tea-Party convention in Pennsylvania.

  • He is a mexican blonder version of Kevin Smith, although their style of filmaking is totally different. Oh and by the way, all you guys saying hes too white well thats just ignorance speaking at its finest, why, because there is tones of white people( and I mean white in colour not race) in mexico mainly in the state of jalisco and surroundings, sadly the majority of mexicans or mexican american in the USA are dark because they are from the working clase hence more sun and hence the dark skin

  • he is such a hack.

neo nazi disney is a perfect match for him.

    kitsch deserves kitsch.

  • @mysticgirl1000 I fail to see how he is a Nazi? His movie takes place in fascist Spain thats all.

  • Omg !! I love Pans Labrynth its AMAZING !!!!

  • love 'em love 'em love 'em!

del toro has photographic memory...which is AWsome!

  • quiter

  • mexican criollo, The state of jalisco is well known for his criollo population due to the lack of mixing with the native indian population

  • people fail to realize that media in Mexico is very big there are a lot of directors, producers, editors etc because Mexicans love movies and novelas(soap operas)

  • There was a french mixter in jalisco back then like around the 17 to 19 century, and i know because my dad is from jalisco, and back then he was taught that french and other europeans settled their, alot!!! so if your wondering why so many people are white and living in mexico, well its the european influence thats why!

  • His english is really good.

  • Why so many comments about if he is "too white" for being mexican, is stupid these kind of comments, is like if you look an interview with Jennifer Lopez and says she is "too brown" to lbe american.

The important thing about this mexican dfilmaker is that he's agenius, not the color of his skin.

  • damn racist whenever there is a white Mexican argue and say it is not Mexican does not matter as there are many Mexicans who are white and some black brown is nothing unusual about either of mexico people do not choose where to be born

  • There are so many dull debates about nationality and race... fuck, the guy is a genius, despite his fucking skin color or the random place he was born in, people doesn't decide that shit so stop giving so much importance to it.

  • There is so many white looking Mexicans, but trying to explain that to someone from the USA or Europeans is damn near impossible.

  • @mazakiel I'm mexican and I live in Barcelona...even spaniards are not too white, and also have a lot of mix, they are always telling me about if someone looks latinamerican or not...I agree with you totally and I believe is just ignorance.

  • @medaigual008 Yeah Spain was under control of the Moors. But i love how Europeans make fun of Americans on how ignorant they are yet they know nothing about the countries they conquered in the past. I mean France, and Spain both conquered Mexico they should know something about it. But from my experience they don't. . .In fact my trip to Spain I found out Latins are not very liked by some.

  • @mazakiel well yeah, they took the over. Of course they dont like them

  • @mazakiel How about the white looking Italians and white looking irish people too. Just kidding. I know what you mean. I just think the whole color thing is funny.

  • @JimSweet It's stupid the whole color thing but, as long as people make such a big thing out of it it's not a joke. I think it would help if people knew that not just Mexicans but Latins are diverse and still have a culture of their own

  • @mazakiel im constantly called white ;.;

  • @wootsausemanman Who cares just play along it's what i do till i can't and i have a fit lol

  • @mazakiel he is white his family never mixed with the mestizos

  • @SwishaHouse7777 I don't personally know him so i could not tell you. He could be and you would never tell. I know his fellow directors in Alfonso Cuarón and Alejandro González Iñárritu are mestizos. Why do you want him to be white so bad? I seen him in interviews he is mexican up the ass

  • @mazakiel idc if he's white I'm not. I'm half pure cherokee and a quarter pure german and a quarter english. I've just read stuff on him and it said he was a minority in mexico and considered white.

  • @SwishaHouse7777 He might be considered white that is a whole different story. White in Mexico is not the same as white in the USA. In fact white changes it's meaning form place to place in Mexico. Also minority means less than the majority. If it was 51% 49% that 49 is the minority. Mexico is hard to get a number. Probably 20%

  • @mazakiel yeah id agree maybe even a little less than 20

  • @SwishaHouse7777 No i think it's more maybe even way more but, it depends what you consider white. People who look white it's over 20 way over. 100% white no mixing at all, way less than 20

  • @mazakiel yeah you are probably right

  • @mazakiel you've been talking to the troglodyte and uneducated varieties all this time, my friend.

  • @mazakiel They are not "white looking Mexicans" they are actually "white", "Caucasian".

  • @mazakiel I'm from the US, but I agree.

  • The accent is sick man

  • Guillermo looks like a typical white dude, he is Mexican. In fact there a lot of blondies in Mexico from European Ancestry, now remember that in the 1930's from the US Great Depression a lot of white people went to make a living in Guadalajara, Mexico that's the reason there are a lot of blond and blue eyes ladies there.

  • videotitan1: Because he is white. Mexican is a nationality. There are also Afro-Mexicans and Asian-Mexicans. Blond hair and blue eyes doesn't matter. You could have Black hair and brown eyes like many Spaniards and Basque do, and be white.

  • Touching obedience, he is right that we shouldn't just obey blindly. There is a fine line, I think . I don't think that most kids have trouble disobeying, it comes pretty naturally. I can say that from personal experience.

  • is he spaniard or mexican?

  • apetyt4destruxin: His nationality is Mexican but he probably has Spaniard ancestry.

  • I agree

  • hes mexican

  • @apetyt4destruxin Mexican of Spanish descent. There are lots of people in Jalisco, mainly in los Altos, that look like him, some are even blond. Their Spanish ancestors went there in the 16th century and there are many descendants living there to this day. Mexico sought independence from Spain because they treated the criollos, new world Spaniards, as a lower class and natives as an even lower class. If they hadn't done that Mexico might of stayed as a part of Spain.

  • He has what alot of directors lack today, great Imagination, And yeah, he really is underated. King of Horrow!

  • my favorite thing about him is the fact that he has an answer to every question right on the spot. that shows that he is sure of himself and of what he does

  • He's a really underrated director, i bet he's gonna do a great job with the hobbit.

  • Both of you are wrong! Guillermo hails from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. Guadalajara is full of european ancestry along with the native indians, so its no surprise that he has the looks of an anglo-saxon. Please seek the proper knowledge before you key in your comments.

  • Guillermo is great.I loved Pan's Labyrinth,I loved Hellboy I and I'm gonna watch The Orphenage and other films.I just don't know how is he gonna make The Hobbit, the film that is for children(unlike LOTR who all were for little mature audience)when he is King of Horrors?I hope he knows what's he doing.

  • this director is just amazing ! the storyline on pans labyrinth is just wonderful !

  • I looooooved Pan's Labyrinth, and Devil's Backbone was just as good.

  • I have to stop watching interviews from Guillermo's movies, I'm slowly falling in love!

  • Who isn't?

  • It's neat to see film directors draw inspiration from other stories that aren't films and life itself. His films seem to touch the little kid in many viewers, albeit in scary, demented ways.

  • U couldn't be more exact!

  • for me his one of the best Mexican directors

  • im really excited about del toro, he is really taking off now, pans was fantastic, so excited about him doing the two hobbit movies, after years of boring dreary crap like stardust and enchanted and all that crap, finally someone comes on the scene and does fairy tales properly, good director.

  • i lol'ed

  • Del toro asked Mike Mignola to help out in the hobbit movie with art designs

  • he should of directed dragonball! james wong sucks at directing.

  • HE SHOULD HAVE.

  • It wasn't Wong's directing that made DBE bad (granted i liked the movie, but will admit it is bad) it was due to the scripts co writer, Ben Ramsey, who put in certing things that Wong did not want. Such as the high scool scenes. To tell you the truth, it's a goood thing wong was able to make changes to it becase EVERY One of Ramsey's scripts sucked. I fully trust Wong writing the sequil by himself and hope it does much better than the first.

  • maybe but its not his style and i doubt he likes anime/manga, he also turned down halo bcuz he is not into science fiction

  • Del Torro did director work on Splice..So he must not dislike it THAT much. His name is in the opening credits.

  • He is amazing.

  • This was a very good movie. I love his visual imagery.

  • he has a cool accent. :)

    and films too.

  • he is gonna make "the hobbit" in 2012.

  • we all know dont need to tell us

  • guillermo you and peter. are fucking awesome at directing!!!!

  • lol, the hobbit is partly co-written and produced by jackson

  • u think it'll be an awesome movie?

  • i guess i have my hopes up already, del toro is a pretty good director and peter jackson, fran walsh, del tor and some other person are involved in the script. but if the movie is going to be good, well your guess is as good as mine

  • Don't stone me for this, but I think what's a problem with the Hobbit is that it's source material (i.e., the book) is much more... odd and childish than LOTR. But if anyone can pull it off, it's gotta be del Toro. It's very hard making a decent children's movie, and that's what he's gotta turn it into, kinda, to make the story work.

Note: There are some *good* children's movies out there. What struck me about the beauty of PL was that it basically was "a children's movie for adults".

  • Is he spanish or Mexican? 'cuz on wiki it says hes mexican but on Rotten Tomatoes its spanish.

    So which is it?

    Love his movies BTW

  • He is Mexican. He's from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mex. but his movies usually take place in Spain.

  • um he is Mexican it also says so in Rottentomatoes

You were probably looking at the Film bio which is set in Spain so it's in Spanish

  • well he looks but his doesn't and why? just cuz is blond and not brunette? or brown skined c'mon man coby bryant is black and is not african,

  • this guy is quickly becoming one of my favorite filmmakers. I'm eager to see what stories he will bring us in the future

  • Gotta' love this guy. :)

  • his genius is inspiring.

He introduced me to the foreign horror genre and now I cant get enough.

    Pans was great.

    Orphanage...wow..just wow

  • viva los mexicanos como este, long live mexicans like him!

  • guillermo del toro, peter jackson, martin scorsese, clint eastwood, godfather dude, and steven spielberg = legenday

  • ROFL

    right on man

Godfather dude = Francis Ford Coppola

  • fuck peter jackson... overrated fat bastard

  • lol he's lost a lot of weight dude...

  • @manny4life Forgot about Tim Burton =P

  • @manny4life you sound like an ignorant fuck when you say the godfather dude. and also lumping those directors in the same category. scorsese, coppola, and spielberg are one category, peter jackson and guillermo are another.

  • Guillermo Del toro is the pice to proof

Mexicans we are able to create movies

    direct movies, etc.

but many media people still saying.....where are the mexicans?

who are the mexicans, bla bla bla, HELLBOY.

    HELLPEOPLE.

  • hellpeople

    rofl

  • there are 5 Mexican directors working in hollywoos as of today (When I say Mexican, I mean directors that crossover from Mex). Alejandro Gonzales Iñarritu (babel, 21 Grams) Alfonso Arau (A Walk in the Clouds) Alfonso Cuaron (Children of Men, Harry Potter III) Guillermo Del Toro (Blade II, Hellboy) & Luis Mandoki (Angel Eyes, Trapped) + Alejandro Gomez Monteverde (Bella) Rigoberto Castañeda (blackout), so we do have some talent in hollywood. Hopefully only the beginning.

  • @juanrr24 Robert Rodriguez

  • I just taped Devil's Backbone and am dying to see it, since alot of ppl like it better than Pan's. Supposedly it is the "masculine" version of Pan's also.

  • An exellent film! You've probably seen it by now. Did you enjoy it? I thought it was like a sibling of Pan's Labyrinth, just as good.

  • What happens in the Devil's Backbone?

  • ghosts

  • Paisano!! :)

    Que viva GDL

  • i wish i could touch him so his genius might rub off on me!

    P.S.

    his accent is cool!

  • WHOOOSHHH!!!

His obey and disobey theory is amazing, and true

  • there is a vampire in the Bush cabinet.

    actually, a couple of them

  • This man is a legendary director! A true visionary.

  • He looks like Michael Moore :)

  • sans the baseball cap, lol

  • Michael Moore or peter Jackson

  • Excellent!! the Mexican Del Toro is directing the Hobbit is amazing that show what Mexicans can do and what Mexicans are proud Guillermo excelente trabajo y felicidades!!!!

  • yes, it's going to be amazing

i just can't wait to see him put his own touch to the story

  • ign is a fuckhole

  • im gonna met guillermo today :D

  • really?!

  • He's ALMOST certainly doing The Hobbit. God willing. It's not 100% set in stone yet.

  • yeah, I know. Still will enjoy him making The Hobbit. He is great.
