Jussi put all the emotion into his singing that it required. Fedora Barbieri said as much. He could sing with power. He could sing with sweetness. Listen to his recording of "Cavalleria Rusticana" with Tebaldi if you want power and passion. He also had a refinement of technique and an emotional timbre that Caruso couldn't begin to duplicate.
His recording of the opera is my favorite complete recording of it with it's great cast besides Jussi, Nilsson , Tebaldi etc. but live of course Corelli with his dramatic sound is the best Calaf I ever heard, of course Jussi didn't sing the opera live but did sing the aria often in recital and on radio. Corelli 's voice fit the role like a glove and I am not a Corelli fan.
When it comes to voices it all depends in your style i prefer a more dramatic voice like Corelli's but Jussi wooww BRAVO!! there are no words to describe how good he is him and Corelli my favorites
His 1944 recording is the rendition to end all renditions of this aria. Having said this, the greatest tenor of all time, for combination of both immense power and beauty has to be Enrico Caruso. If Enrico had end the modern recording technique this often debated topic would be far more easily resolved.I love Jussi but Enrico will always have the edge. It is well known that Jussi loved to belt out arias while listening to Enrico. 2 Giants!
Incredible singing capacity, beautiful sounds.Considered by many experts, the PERFECT OPERATIC VOICE of the past Century. Also take into account the time he recorded that aria. Imagine his incredible voice and pure sounds uttered with the new recording techniques on cd.
For all people who want to know more about OPERA singing just Listen to JUSSI carefully: sound by sound his technique is amazing, considered by opera EXPERTS the PERFECT voice of past century. When said greatest voice, we are not comparing him at all with any other, but Instead " singing"... we aknowlege his vocal expertise and magnificence.
As he is a dramatic tenor, he's got a lot of strength and squillo (metal) on his privileged voice. Moreover his voice has a big extension. One of the best tenors ever.
The best tenor of all time! He could sing a wide variety of songs because of his wonderful voice and perfect technique. I don´t agree that he sings with any less emotion than others- I f you listen to live performances he is perhaps even better. For example Pieta Signore from recital volume 2.
Jussi never seemed to put much emotional effort into any of his songs, but went instead for perfect technique at all times. Of course, it is up to every individual what they prefer. Myself, I must say I prefer the more intense, dramatic approach to this specific aria.
Emotion doesn't have to be expressed an overly dramatic approach. I love Caruso, gigli, and all the Italian greats, but if you are saying Jussi doesn't have emotional effort in this rendition you must be tone deaf. God help us!
more often than not that dramatic approach is hurting the singer. jussi was smart giving himself a long career by singing technically sound. If you watch him do it live he has an abundance of facial expression he just doesnt let bad technique infiltrate his clear tonality

The greatest voice! Bjorling was sent down from Heaven to straighten matters out where it came to singing in the tenor voice. The ears "guide such singers" and his were perfect!
