KTM and dakar is different from 2 unexperienced riders going the long way round. For dakar specially prepped, a professional driver, excellent technical support,spare parts,and just few days it takes from start to finish. KTM did not believe that the bikes would survive 3 month of abuse. And that would be bad for business. BMW on the other hand believed that no matter who rides it, and no matter the conditions, the bike will make it.

@PeterXL700 Which pretty much proves the point that KTM bikes are inferior. BMW KNEW their bikes could take the abuse of two amateur (albeit well off amateur) riders under the worst conditions.  KTM could of stepped up and proved the critics wrong, but they knew they could not.

KTM would've been capable of the trip, but would they have been beefy enough to handle the paniers and add-ons? No. BMW makes beefy endurance bikes FOR THIS kind of thing. Which is why Ewan wanted the BMW to begin with.

I think the BMWs a better all the time you're on the road, off the road the KTM may be quicker, but the beemer will be more comfortable. Its a more sturdy bike I think. KTM really missed a trick there though. The sale of those BMW GS things must have sky rocketed. I've seen so many since this was released. To be fair they are fantastic bikes.

@F1X0R121 You're right. Sales for BMWs did increase quite a bit because of this very show. Problem with the BMWs wasn't because they're not good (built) for server conditions but because this version and the next version of GS was actually too heavy. The version after that was totally redesigned and was around 30lbs lighter.

@F1X0R121 You've got to keep in mind that it may only be 20k but a lot of it, especially through Kazakhstan and Siberia, was really, really hard mileage. The BMW bikes failed technically, snapped the frame then the dummies tried to weld on the frame without disconnecting the electronics. I honestly think that KTM did not have confidence in their product enough to supply the bikes. "You might fail." That's the whole fucking point of an adventure. KTM lost a lot of my respect because of this.

@greewone: No, you missed the point. KTM did not want to GIVE for free the bikes and supposrt to McGregor/Boorman. If you watch, the BMW's have problems too, broken shocks, electrical problems, cracked frames.... ANY bike would make the journey provided they had the support that McGregor/Boorman had.
