Haven't you noticed how manufacturers rate there RMS from, example of 150 RMS to 500. If you don't power it correctly it clips and you can blow your sub just as easily as over powering it.

No. It's still receiving the same amount of power.

Hooking a 1,000 watt sub to a 2,000 watt amp not playing at full excursion can still fuck up your sub. Same concept.

It's just that the amp has to work harder to push the sub, which means it was clip at a sine wave, because it's pushing too much than it's supposed to, which, yes, it will screw your sub.
