Just like you said, a slug is just one large projectile, the one you said that shoots tiny balls out is called shot. Shot varies in sizes. One of the smallest shot is #9 shot, which is many tiny projectiles all being fired all at once. One of the biggest is 000 (triple-aught) buckshot which shoots less, but larger projectiles. 00 (double-aught) buckshot is a little bit smaller than 000 buckshot but generally has more projectiles.

Yes, the smaller projectiles the more in numbers

The smaller the number, the bigger the shot

since there is no smaller number than 0 (other than negative numbers, but you cannot use negative numbers in measurements for firearms) so they add more zeroes in stead such as, 0 (aught) and 00 (double aught)

In Texas you dont need a licence, you just get a simple background check and you can get a shotgun. Your dad can get one and you can go shooting with him, or uncle. Im only 15 years old and i go shooting alot with my uncle. To buy shotgun ammo you have to be 18, you just pay and leave no background checks or anything

And if you cripple someone in self defense, just make sure you diddnt use a gun, if you did you would be charged with just the gun thats it

Yeah you need an adult watching you when your shooting, if its for self defense, its most likely not gunna be a problem because your life was at risk, but theres gunna ask a bunch of questions like where you got the gun and how did you get access to it
