I was at the site in 1970, I met Smithson my father and grandfather where involved with the construction. I live only 50 miles away as the bird fly’s, I drive 90 miles to get to the site I have been their many times, I shot some great video three days ago of the jetty. The lake has reseeded drastically, I stepped it off it is approximately 412 yards from the shore line right now. It has very metaphorical look to it right now. kevin d. blanch
I have always hated the sight of SPiral Jetty. Its form is ugly to me. However I have recently become interested in Smithson via research into Matta-Clark. His fascination with entropy and his diatribe on monuments. Matta-Clark went at it with monumental de-architecture but Smithson in all his glory spins himself into a desperate jetty a- hires a helicopter to show his abrupt stop at the end of his train of thought !(?) Mark Tansey paints a wonderfull comment on spiral jetty
Look up Smithson in any books on art and you'll get this one, look up Land Art a Complete Guide by William Malpas and you can put it into context. Lets face it it smacks heavily of American money and politics in art!
This is amazing. I was studying for my exam (taking History of American Art) and seen it from my textbook to video it's unbelievable. This Spiral Jetty is located in Great Salt Lake, Utah.
Isn't it amazing? I simple love it. The way he did it was because he was doing like a research and saw the way the molecules of the crystal salts are form and with the shore of the Lake it came to be like a spiral!!!
This is a fundamental piece of Art History and Earth Art...I've always wanted to go see this. You really get a sense of the enormity of the project as the chopper flies away from Smithson on the tip of his jetty.
I knew it was him talking there but wasn't sure if it was him there running on it. I showed the video for my art history presentation. Tis a nice little vid.
I went here yesterday. It was underwater but the sunset was pretty awesome. I was in a SUV but I could've done this in my hatchback no problem.

Was that the helicopter that killed him?
superjules 3 years ago
This wasn't the plane that kill him. I'm pretty sure he was showing the people his work when it was done (1970) he died three years later.

It was really awesome, but ungodly hard to get to. The "road" is so bad, it takes a big 4x4 truck of SUV just to make it there.

Can someone post the remainder of this film? (If possible.) I've always wanted to see it.

The art professor I had this past semester told us about the video so that is how I knew it had to be him.
