The faces on the Lionel version have sort of a squatty, "anime" look to them for some reason. The Bachmann versions seem to be a bit more detailed and closer to the show. But the Lionel's also seem to have more "reliability" to them. It doesn't matter how well a train maker does, they will never perfectly reproduce the original Thomas & Friends trains.
Though I would love to see Bachmann make Gordon in this scale, he'd be HUGE. He may be an ass but I have to say Gordon's my fave. :)
@Slane583 It would be great to see Gordon is G scale. Emily is next and should be out at the end of this year with a bit of luck. After that who knows? We'll definately be getting any new releases so keep watching to see what is to come!

@JaysizzoLOGE I think the James would look a little odd with the Linoel James, there is a large difference in size. Personally I would get a Bachmann Thomas too. Alternatively, you could get a Lionel James so they match, you can put them up in eBay. At the end of the day it's you fleet but I would go for bachmann. Hope this helps! @bluehairedgirlstudio The Lionel engines with 2 wagons cost around £100. It's about £160 for bachmann locos with coaches. Both come with a circle of track and a controller. Remember, Lionel ones were made over 15 years ago so there will be some difference in value. Thanks for watching and keep following!
What scale are these? The HO Bachman are very "Less accurate" due to the engines such as James, Edward, or any engine with an open cab is just a block. Where Horby has the actual engine look like a real engine in todays modern world, with a face and the paint scheme.

bachman looks quite a bit better than the lionel but lionel lasts far longer and is tougher than the bachman. i have also had many problems with my bachman locomotives like , they dont run smooth, they are loud, and i left one sit on my shelf for a year with all my other trains made by lionel and atlas and cleaned them when i used them again and the bachman locomotive wouldnt run at all...........i strongly suggest that if your looking for quality o scale trains spend extra money on lionel.

Hmmm, Lionel was great back in the day, and it may not be the most accurate model now that Bachmann's doing it, but the sound effects that it makes at speed definetly makes it abit more realistic than the Bachmann counterpart. If only the sound effects could be put into the Bachmann models...
@eddierools Sound could be put into these models. In the Lionel Thomas and James the sound systems were added after they were bought. Let's put this into perspective, the Lionel is prototypical, as in the films and books, yellow steam dome for one point, It's like comparing an early ford Focus with a 2011 model, Bachmann have done just that given it a new look, both excellent models of their time. Well done Scott for the comparison. When Lionel was all we had it was great, now we have Bachmann even better.
@BirstallNorth Well said, When Lionel brought there models out, there was only the original series to go by and therefore made them to that design. Since then Thomas is now being shown in CGI (Digital) so the bachmann model capture the CGI look. I you wanted to buy one of these now you can only by the bachmann brand new. The Lionel's James face looks close to the original model, and the Bachmann looks like the new CG James. I'd stick the Lionel's face on the Bachmann James LOL :P But the Lionel's overall look super weird lol

It's no contest, really. The Bachmann model is by FAR the superior. It pays homage to the detail and captures the essence of James.
The Lionel model simply looks like a Tomy toy modified to be an attempt at Hornby!

The Lionel's James face looks close to the original model, and the Bachmann looks like the new CG James. I'd stick the Lionel's face on the Bachmann James LOL :P But the Lionel's overall look super weird lol

@fighter4luv Bachmann have based there models on the CGI Thomas and Friends, so it depends what you prefer!

Bachmann make them look like baby's toys. Lionel loses just by LOOKING at the models.
