I feel like they are far from being similar at all.Maybe in size but that's it.He didn't cover gestures, the ability to play flash,e-reading.Especially now with the 16gb being $200 and the 64gb only $300.And android apps being added to the playbook.when they came out the playbooks were not worth the money. But now they are far better.I remember reading a good quote about them.If you want an e-reader that looks like a tablet, the fire is for you.But if you want a good tablet, the playbook is better.
@pablo95m The apps in the appstore kinda suck. You can run android app on it now. There's a list of apps that have already been converted. I can't put in links but if you google "list of android apps for playbook" you will get the list.
They both share the same processor, motherboard, LCD display. And some other Samsung components. Oh and the Fire does have an ambient light sensor just like the iPad.
Set exposure to -0.3 or -0.7 stops to make up for the bright screens. Or use more lights to decrease difference between ambient and screen brightness. Digital cameras suck with dynamic range.
@nerdycanadian you can always browse the apps available at the blackberry website. I am going to most likely snag the blackberry cause of the memory size, the hdmi output is a bonus, and a cam for the price is very reasonable its 200 currently originally 500, so before i buy im gonna do a instore review as well. just remember guys do your research and buy what you need not what you want
How stable is the Playbook O/s? I had a crackberry a couple of years ago and it froze/crashed etc constantly. I hated it. I do want a tablet and thought a Nook Tablet was the way to go but it's too locked out of apps and the latest update means no more rooting etc. HELP! I am not an Amazon Prime member and I will not be becoming one. Is there a date book app sort of thing on the Playbook? What about weather?
@bubbleface59 yup fully capable, but because the os interface is most fluid in landscape that is what they suggest. In the case of E reading, apps ect. its great!
The light sensor on the blackberry playbook is a pain in the but!! trust me, its awful when you are just in the right amount of light it will flicker bright dark bright dark non stop.... i shut that off!!!
to get andriod apps on your blackberry you need to jailbreak it and a jailbreak was realased a couple months ago. Serach up "Playbook Dingleberry jailbreak" on youtube to download it and there will be walkthrough videos on how to do it.:D
Dude sers what the hell... Based on features and specifications u gave the playbook the upperhand n u chose the kindle fire in the end... Hahahaha ur a gimp baaaaad...
i have used both and i prefer the kindle. more user friendly. took me about half hour to get used to the blackberry playbook and get to know its features. and it took me about 2 minutes to get to know all the features and how things work on the kindle fire.
(Note: BlackBerry Playbook does not have skype, or netflix. The kindle however does.)
@custompcreview all of the android apps because i like android and i want to get a honeycomb tablet but the bb playbook will save me a lot of money and i have 2 android phones and dont have a blackbery but i kb=now how to use the playbook so should i spend more money and get honeycomb or save my money and stick with bb playbook
@QualityHoops android isn't coming. android app compatibility is coming with playbook v2.0. It should be out within the next couple months. Beta is already out and you can test drive it.
does the kindle have word,or is there an app I can download to get something it? also I have the fire and I have a prediciment. I dont want to register my fire to my moms account on amazon (the one I mainly use) because it will be in her name and send her the emails. instead, i have it registered to my account, but she has prime, not me. would there be a problem logging into her account while the kindle is registered to me and using her prime, and how would cloud storage work(my account v. hers)
@maninabox32697 Yeah there's quick office for the kindle fire that works for documents. I think in order to take advantage of prime features you need to be logged into her account.
It's pretty clear to me that the fire is the right choice if you are an amazon prime member. However, if you aren't the playbook comes out on top. Seeing as the Fire is not available in Canada however, I am happy the playbook is a solid choice at $199.
@CanadaMMA Yeah, the Playbook is an awesome choice at $200. If you can get it at that price though. I don't think Blackberry can sustain the Playbook at that price. The Kindle Fire has less features hardware wise and according to iSuppli, Amazon is only making like $10 on every unit sold. At $200, Blackberry must be losing money on each Playbook.
Blackberry needs to get it's act together. They still have a solid lock on the business side of things but that's starting to slip away because of their service problems. The fact there is no BBM on the playbook yet (and from the sounds of it April is the earliest we are going to see it) is inexcusable. I have no idea WHY they have yet to add it and the fact they haven't told us why is even more frustrating.
I must say thank you for your time and efforts :) It was a nice video, just that sometimes the camera was out of focus causing blurred view.... otherwise a lot of content, nicely covered all aspects..... Thanks a lot
@JoeCoolTV No promises, but I'll see if I can get one. Otherwise, it should be similar to the Steelseries 6Gv2 or Mionix Zibal 60 (Cherry MX Black mechanical switches)
Just gonna say this, bad review. The only reason anyone would possibly choose the amazon kindle over the blackberry playbook is if they were going for an e-reader, the playbook has flash, two camera's and blackberry OS 2.0 which brings in android player, giving the blackberry playbook the edge over everything including the screen. In the review you said first that the blackberry has a light sensor and has a brighter screen yet you still called the screens even, what?
@troymanify It's a personal choice. Playbook has flash, KF has flash. 2 cameras and no skype support. As useless as no camera to me. If you walk around with the playbook in snapping off shots more power to you. I got other cameras. In my experience 2.0 beta is pretty buggy. Lotta wifi drops so I've actually been using the Kindle Fire even more. Yeah playbook has a light sensor and a slightly brighter screen that I like but most importantly user experience and apps? IMO KF > Playbook
My sister got the kindle fire and i went out and bought the playbook and i feel that the playbook goes beyond anything the kindle fire can do. The kindle fire either way you look at it is still an ereader while the playbook is a tablet pc
I would choose the Playbook Hands-Down....BUT the reason i kinda want the kindle fire is because what it offers, store wise. The apps/games are much cheaper and there are MORe games. Ex. Angry birds is 99 cents on kindle but 4.99 on the BB App World. So I'm thinking of gettin the Fire because it offers more to purchase and the prices are reasonable.
just for the record the playbook runs amazon prime just fine. i was able to sign up and stream 2 movies for 3.99 each and an amazon prime subscription free movie. what makes this even sweeter, i was able to use the playbook's hdmi out to display the movies on my 40" screen in full HD.
@kylegrantmorgan 1. Yes, I will do my best. 2. But, but I likkke it... =) 3. Yeah I am usually more prepared for real reviews. This one isn't really a review. It's just me spewing out random thoughts. I will write something down next time though. Appreciate the feedback!
@custompcreview the playbook seems really awesome, the graphics seem nice and it looks to run quite sleek..the apps are just the only thing that gets me,lots of people have been saying that blackberry has barely any apps,is this true?
@ChanFan03 Yeah, the app store sucks. It is supposed to get android app support when 2.0 is released. Should be sometime early next year (Feb I heard)
@RobiticGamer You have to upgrade to Playbook OS 2.0, jailbreak it, then install android marketplace for android apps. You'll have to look up how to do that. When you upgrade to v2.0 the auto updater will still work. Updates will be pushed out OTA. Hope it helps.
i cant decide which on to get.. i really dont like alot of things about the fire because i hear it laggs so much.. but at the same time the content on the playbook isnt that good?? or least thats what im hearing someone help??
@TheAlex108718 Well the Playbook can access Amazon's content, but yeah you do have to use the web browser to browse over to Amazon's site unlike how the Kindle Fire has native apps that do it. Amazon just released a new update a couple days ago that did speed up the Kindle Fire.
@custompcreview cool so which on do you suggest? i think im going to end up going with the playbook just because it has a camera.. and theres a suppose update where you can use apps from andriod?? is this true??
@TheAlex108718 If you plan on purchasing prime for ~$79 a year, get the Kindle Fire. If not, grab the Playbook. The camera on the playbook is pretty much the same as the camera on your cell phone. It's not that great lol... The update for the Playbook to support aandroid apps is supposed to be released February.
@XenEON999 It should come out when Playbook OS v2 comes out. I've heard within the next couple months maybe February. The beta is currently out so it can't be long.
I have a question or two. Does the playbook have apps like skype, or a video editor. Is it possible to record video with it and upload it to Facebook or YouTube? I'm debating between the playbook or the acer iconia a100... Also since the playbook is flash compatible that means that hulu and other streaming sites will work on it correct? Thanks!
@XenEON999 No skype or video editor (or at least I haven't found them yet), but you can upload video to youtube and facebook. It's flash compatible which means it should work on hulu, but hulu blocks the playbook. Youtube is supported and Amazon prime videos are supported.
I have a question or two. Does the playbook have apps like skype, or a video editor. Is it possible to record video with it and upload it to Facebook or YouTube? I'm debating between the playbook or the acer iconia a100... Thanks!
Gosh! Thanks I just pick one up for 199.99 but my ??? Can I play my Facebook games on the playbook? Please I m a big FarmVille yoville cafe world gamer And wanted a tab to move from family house to family house without having to lug my laptop!
Very good review. Thanks, it's really helpful. Couldn't decide which one to get. Do you know anything about Nook Tablet by Barnes and Noble?? Anyway, my friend just got a bb playbook and he said the wi-fi is slow and keeps turning on and off. Is it supposed to do that??
@prupe109 I've played with the Nook but I didn't buy it. It's not that great lol. I don't like the interface as much as the Kindle Fire. The design is lousy too. I really like the simple black tablet appearance. I think it looks good. Of course, beauty in the eye of the beholder. As for the playbook wifi issues I haven't experienced that. Is he using the new playbook 2.0 beta? Maybe thats why?
@minimaxa The Playbook is currently $300. So it's $100 more expensive. IMO it wins in hardware and features, but like I said in the video, I personally prefer the Kindle Fire. I don't think either of them "win" completely. They're two different products that win for 2 different groups of people.
I have both also and agree with your conclusion I was able to pick up the playbook for $189.00 during the Thanksgiving Holiday. I do have my Fire rooted so that I can have the Android market as well and once custom roms start coming out I will change it. The Playbook hopefully will get better if RIM sticks to their Feb release of OS2.
I dont care about storage 8 gb is good enough for me my 2 year old 3rd gen 8gb ipod touch has 2 gb left. I'm still wondering what I'm going to do with 32 gb on my preorder asus transformer prime plus 1 year free cloud storage plus 2 sd cards and a flash drive. WOW!! I wish there was a 16 gb model for $400.
@custompcreview I know its a little much but I've been saving up for a while and with its tegra 3 chip and 32 gb of storage its pretty much a steal for $500 but it's killing me that I can't have it until Christmas morning because my dad is making me pay $300 for it and he's going to put $200 in but thats the only thing I'm getting for christmas but I think I'd rather have one huge gift than have a ton of small gifts. Also I'm in school so it's also going to be a replacement for my computer.
Good video. I believe the Playbook is a better buy, judging on RIM's promises in February of a new update. However, we know how RIM's promises play out.
@dougaldow4 Yeah for me it seems like the Playbook has a lot of features and has a lot more potential than the Kindle Fire, but it seems like RIM doesn't know what direction to develop it in. IMO tablets are consumption devices. I can't imagine writing an essay on a tablet. I just can't. On the other hand, Amazon got the Fire's purpose right. They defined a specific purpose for the device (entertainment) and did a great job on execution.

XenEON999 2 months ago
@XenEON999 It should come out when Playbook OS v2 comes out. I've heard within the next couple months maybe February. The beta is currently out so it can't be long.

I have a question or two. Does the playbook have apps like skype, or a video editor. Is it possible to record video with it and upload it to Facebook or YouTube? I'm debating between the playbook or the acer iconia a100... Also since the playbook is flash compatible that means that hulu and other streaming sites will work on it correct? Thanks!
XenEON999 2 months ago
@XenEON999 No skype or video editor (or at least I haven't found them yet), but you can upload video to youtube and facebook. It's flash compatible which means it should work on hulu, but hulu blocks the playbook. Youtube is supported and Amazon prime videos are supported.

@cuqui52 Not sure. I don't have farmville. It plays flash ok though so if that uses flash, it should work fine.

Very good review. Thanks, it's really helpful. Couldn't decide which one to get. Do you know anything about Nook Tablet by Barnes and Noble?? Anyway, my friend just got a bb playbook and he said the wi-fi is slow and keeps turning on and off. Is it supposed to do that??
prupe109 2 months ago
@prupe109 I've played with the Nook but I didn't buy it. It's not that great lol. I don't like the interface as much as the Kindle Fire. The design is lousy too. I really like the simple black tablet appearance. I think it looks good. Of course, beauty in the eye of the beholder. As for the playbook wifi issues I haven't experienced that. Is he using the new playbook 2.0 beta? Maybe thats why?

good review, the playbook wins although it is 3 x more expensive than the fire?
minimaxa 2 months ago
@minimaxa The Playbook is currently $300. So it's $100 more expensive. IMO it wins in hardware and features, but like I said in the video, I personally prefer the Kindle Fire. I don't think either of them "win" completely. They're two different products that win for 2 different groups of people.

interesting tab...

The Kindle Fire looks like the User Interface is more unique. I would perfer that one:)

MotorolaTriumphUser 2 months ago
@MotorolaTriumphUser Whoa! Nice man. I'm envious. Need Transformer Prime... but it costs so much lol... =(
custompcreview 2 months ago
@custompcreview I know its a little much but I've been saving up for a while and with its tegra 3 chip and 32 gb of storage its pretty much a steal for $500 but it's killing me that I can't have it until Christmas morning because my dad is making me pay $300 for it and he's going to put $200 in but thats the only thing I'm getting for christmas but I think I'd rather have one huge gift than have a ton of small gifts. Also I'm in school so it's also going to be a replacement for my computer.

Good video. I believe the Playbook is a better buy, judging on RIM's promises in February of a new update. However, we know how RIM's promises play out.
dougaldow4 2 months ago
@dougaldow4 Yeah for me it seems like the Playbook has a lot of features and has a lot more potential than the Kindle Fire, but it seems like RIM doesn't know what direction to develop it in. IMO tablets are consumption devices. I can't imagine writing an essay on a tablet. I just can't. On the other hand, Amazon got the Fire's purpose right. They defined a specific purpose for the device (entertainment) and did a great job on execution.
custompcreview 2 months ago
bottom line the the only advantage about the fire is android since you can root for CM7
JacobBeh 2 months ago
I think the Kindle wins simply because of the ecosystem. They have way more content then RIMM and blackberry could ever provide.
ZeroSection 2 months ago
You are correct the fire is using Gorilla Glass.

why do u own both lol
JumpinJimmy18 2 months ago
Why are you comparing these? A 500 dollar tablet vs a 200 dollar tablet? They're both in completely different price ranges!

@AmateurDrumCovers Blackberry makes everything expensive.
galesx95 2 months ago
@AmateurDrumCovers Blackberry playbook is $300 ATM and on Black Friday it was $200. It used to be $500, but not anymore.
custompcreview 2 months ago
@custompcreview I think you can get them as cheap as 220 on amazon used lol.
