Tortoises cannot hear their name!. But the smells it, when you near them. When my Tortoises sleep and you breath to them, they wake up. I think they also can feel the vibrations of human steps.

And if you feed it when you come around then it's associated all those things with food and comes out wanting a meal. My tortoises do this too, I wake them up by walking by and they come out expecting food in my hands. Too cute though.

I found a water one in the centre of my city,ok,well, a friend found it,but she didn't have the environment or knowledge needed to take care of it.So she gave it to me!And now I care for it as well as I can.I can't say i can provide very good living conditions,but it's summer so i guess that it's not so bad for now..I already have one small tortoise(water one) but this new arrival is the size of football.It is big and store-bought,too.What kind of people would throw it away!! According to everything I have read, tortoises don't technically hear. They feel vibrations. I think she responded to you flashing your light in her face and thumping on the ground.

P.S. The short tail seems to indicate you have a little girl :)

@mistresslegato We have a tortoise too and I think he hears pretty well. Because while eating he turns his head to look if you call him. And stops walking if he hears someone calling.

And about the gender , you can't really tell which one it is until he/she reaches maturity. We were told that our tortoiste is a girl, but when he turned 14-15 we noticed that his tail grew and that he probably was he not she. Now he's 17 years old Russian tortoise with a girls name. ;)

Tortoise are very smart! Murphy came to me always, followed me around, when I would say it's time for bed he would head for the bedroom into his bed I had made up for him. he would play with my cat and dog and when I would pick him up and he was BIG! he would streach his neck out and hug my neck!. my daughter had a smaller one it would kiss her. they are very fun pets.
