My last hour of being "sweet little sixteen." It's amazing how quickly time flies by, isn't it? I'm gunna be 17 in less than an hour now, so I thought I would spend it with my favorite band ever.
You can clearly hear the attempt to create stereo effects from the original mono recording. It seems that it might be time to re evaluate the original tape and remaster it with the latest techniques, this time in the true original mono. This has not been worked on since the late 1970's to my knowledge. Cheers
The Beatles will ALWAYS be the greatest rock n' roll band of all time. Some groups may be your personal challengers or favorites, ..but the Beatles brought about a virtual revolution in rock music that you will only see once in a lifetime. If you ask the members of any rock band of any substance out there who their favorite band and influence was, they are more than likely to reply the Beatles.
@IwillKillYourCerealChuck Berry and Chess records threatened to sue the Beach Boys who settled out of court with Chuck Berry getting the vast majority of the royalties.
i know you're all gonna tear this apart.. but i just love the stones so much more, to me they had a more back alley bluesy sound. i can see if you're more into the trippy stuff why you'd like the beatles more, but c'mon jumpin jack flash, the entire beggars banquet and exile on main street albums were both masterpieces
@neverbeen2graceland In 1963, The Beatles gave the Stones "I Wanna Be Your Man" as a single so the Stones could have a hit, which they did with John and Paul's song. And then John and Paul gave it to Ringo to sing. The Stones weren't even songwriters then, and The Beatles had 3 No. 1 records by then, and had sold staggering figures for record sales. I love the Stones, but the Beatles started, and made possible, the British Invasion. The Stones benefitted from the Beatles leadership as artists.
Even if this recording is in poor quality and muffled you can tell the Beatles owned the stage whereever they played. And Harrison called this sessions as a drunk guy recording a bunch of drunk players! I can't even imagine how they played when sober.
The Stones are fine. Consider, however, that "the boys" never felt it necessary to pout their lips, gyrate, posture and generally look like angry youths. They were wild enough. They weren't bastions of morality or anything, but they actually smiled like they just felt so dang good and the music and singing, consequently, had more power and intensity than if they'd done the angry thing. Ya know?
@blowinviper the beatles were that way because their image was managed by a professional. He knew how to make money. Mate, this totally is the Beatles. December1962 - a long time after Tony Sheridan had them backing him. They had already released Love Me Do 3 months previously
@dougalmac54 The tapes were originally described as having been recorded in the spring of 1962, an attempt to pre-date The Beatles' June 1962 contract signing with Parlophone, but they were actually recorded in late December. John even says between songs a rhyme about Christmas and Tommy Roes 'Shiela' covered with George singing wasnt even released in the US until August 1962.
@benreturns What you say is possible, but according to the liner notes on the album, it was from April '62, which would pre-date the Beatles being signed by George Martin to Parlophone in June anyway. Sheila may have come from The beatles touring with Tommy Roe in England.
@dougalmac54 No.Benreturns is correct. What he was saying was you can't trust those liner notes you keep quoting because the company that released the Star Club tapes knew that there was a good chance they'd be sued and so just lied about the date and Ringo 'sitting in' for Pete ("The sleeve note, apart from being inaccurate, seems to have been written with a court case in mind."-J.Lennon 1978)
@RodCow Yeah, I concede that now. After doing some research it became apparent to me that the actual performance took place in Dec. well after Ringo joined. Benreturns point is correct.
There is. This whole concert was recorded from a single microphone then buried for 15 years. The Beatles thought the sound quality was absolutely hopeless, but when you're dealing with something as hot as this, miracles can be made possible. Lingasong Records invested $100,000 to clean up the tape as much as possible and reduce the audience noise in the background through a 16-track transfer and remix. Later, the vocals were brought more forward. Still, it's the Beatles, live, with Ringo.
@gpietsch Who cares about the sound quality? Anyone who judges this on that basis is a fool and is totally missing the point. Listen to the performances. The Beatles are like a roaring forest fire, red-smokin' hot rockers. This has balls galore, and it amply shows why they were a sensation on stage. Who the hell else was playing rock 'n' roll like this in 1962? The Beatles, as always were light years ahead of their time.
@gpietsch I wondered how the Beatles' Hamburg tapes have been sounding so good on YouTube. Years ago, when the albums came out, you could hardly hear the voices. But these cleaned up tracks present really clear renditions of what are the only recordings of the Beatles pre-fame repertoire. It's amazing to hear the energy in their live performances. These recordings are now a "gold mine" toward understanding the Beatles evolution from "local band" to "global icons". Thanks for the info.
@coolhilts The one thing to understand is that the Beatles got so good because they were on stage eight hours a night playing their hearts out. They started out as a Top-40 band before they wrote their own hits. When they left for Hamburg in 1960, they were a bum group. When they came back to Liverpool two months later, they were vastly improved.
@nairegui In one of the books I have, there's a photo of them with Pete Best in the stage suits, so the suits came before Ringo. I think that Brian Epstein got them the suits so that they could appeal more to the entertainment establishment back then.
@funkadelic123 No, Ringo was filling in for Pete on this particular night, as documented by "King Size" Ted Taylor, who recorded The beatles on this show.
The sound of the piece is much better in Chuck. Here with The Beatles is very monotonous.
