I tend to think of Samba as a dance whose character is variant with the particular song, but these kids have certainly put the attitude in it! Of course it is better than Dancing with the Stars; don't get me wrong--I like the show myself-- but the pros are forced to teach adults, most of whom have never danced competitively. These kids are probably training daily, and have been for many many years. Comparison is moot.

No, it's not samba and it has nothing to do with samba. I'm Brazilian and I know very well what samba is. First of all samba is not a ballroom dance... the ballroom dance people (probably the americans) made up this style and called samba... but if you wanna know what saba is, take a look at this video:

Everyone who dances knows that what we call samba in ballroom doesn't have much in common with the original samba from Brazil anymore. Just like the European tango differs significantly from the Argentinian one. Still I don't see why you can't accept that they've got the same name. Also, if you know enough about ballroom-style samba you'll see that they still have certain moves in common. The music of Latin dancing as well is currently moving closer to its roots again.

In the IDSF (International Dance Sport Federation) the two divisions are Latin (samba, chacha, rhumba, jive and paso doble) and Standard (slow waltz, slowfox, quickstep, viennese waltz and tango). Both divisions together are called "ballroom".

That is, if we're talking about international style dancing. The crazy stuff that the USAmericans do (Smooth, American style) is their business.
