the greek phalanx was a very situational formation, it only worked on flat open terrain, and was vulnerable to attack at the flanks, and could only attack in one direction; forward. That is why Greece was defeated by rome's superbly manuverable and versitile soldiers.

1) giving too much power to the middle class..
3) too expensive: it was not so much value for money. For the same money you would arm 3 or 4 times the number of men.
The early legionaire was in fact a light infantry but carryign a heavy long oval wooden shield. Not excellent protection, nor amazing flexibility as people think. But value for money. You could arm vast numbers of men with cheap low quality weapons...
Romans did not defeat them so much in war but mostly in poltiics. 80% of Greeks, pretty mich everyone was with them apart Epirots, Macedonians, Syracusians and Corinthians who resisted, It is not difficult to conquer any nation when the 80% is politically allied to you!!! To me that sounds most certainly far, faaaaar ahead of the timeline in which the phalanx was born. But yes, pikemen later on did form phalanxes. (just not hoplite phalanxes)
the hoplites were a superb ighting force greater than the roman leigonaires the only problem was that the phalanx formation was slow and difficult to manuvere but still a great army.
I think it would have been great for history to have witnessed battles between hoplite phalanxes(not the pike phalanxes first utilised by Philip) and roman legions. Most hoplites, especially the Thebans, were brutally effective in single combat, whereas the pikemen were worthless in close quarters, especially those of the hellenistic era. I think hoplites vs legions would be the ultimate infantry match-up!

In those days it wasnt the individual soldier that won the war it was the commander. In the ancient world Greek hoplites were among the very best in the world, till Phillip came around with his new and improved Macedonian army. Alexander the great took them and bravely conquered the world.
Dear friend, I think you need to refresh your history. The Athenians and the Thebans in Chaeronia were routed and killed respectively only after they had been attacked from the flanks and the rear by the heavy companion cavalry. That is because the pike phalanx was primarily a defensive formation suitable for 'hammer and anvil' tactics. When in the hellenistic era the role of the cavalry distingerated and the phalanx became the main offensive weapon, it was a huge tactical drawback.
If the Romans could somehow manage to break the pike formation and bring the fighting to close quarters (as opposed to the 4-5m distance the sarissas were supposed to pinch the enemy) the phalangites would be massacred, bearing only a 60cm diameter shield without a grip, a phrygian helmet or laconian pilos and a linothorax. But unfortunately Philip's and Alexander's success had conviced every other greek army to copy the macedonian type of phalanx.
Hence all those crushing roman victories, save their early defeats at the hands of Pyrrhus.
Therefore I do believe that a traditional hoplite phalanx, especially with the Thebans spearheading a return towards archaic era models of heavy armor, would have performed much better against the Romans, just like it had done against Bruttians and Leucanians in Italy or Carthage's Iberian and Gallic mercenaries in Sicily, who fought in a very similar fashion to the Romans
@the5thillusion I do not disagree. BUT you miss 1 little detail. In the 2 main Roman victories over the Macedonian army, the cavalry REFUSED to participate in the crucial moment. Cavalry were the aristocrats that resisted the kings' power. Following the Pudna vicory "suddenly" all of a sudden 100s of pro-Romn citizens appeared from nowhere betraying their compatriots.
Romans simply had NOT found any answer to the phalanx. Flaminius still remembered his shock years after, in his nightmares...

Actually the Hoplites were alwas largly succesful against the roman army.Just that the Romans had so much more man power you just couldn't beat them. and the romans could easily use large amounts of calvery to swing behind and murder the hoplites, or use long range weapons such as bows,balistics and such. romans knew how to destroy a macedonian slow phalanx and ONLY from behind and sides..from the front was unstopable ether of infantry or cavarly..BUT the old phalanx formation of spartans and thebans was more mobile with 4 meter spear and the big unbreakable hoplon shield.so the pilum was only to destroy light shields such as macedonians litle shields(they had litle because their spear was 7 meter)and not to kill or to destroy the hoplon shield!!

To me that sounds most certainly far, faaaaar ahead of the timeline in which the phalanx was born. But yes, pikemen later on did form phalanxes. (just not hoplite phalanxes)

I think it would have been great for history to have witnessed battles between hoplite phalanxes(not the pike phalanxes first utilised by Philip) and roman legions. Most hoplites, especially the Thebans, were brutally effective in single combat, whereas the pikemen were worthless in close quarters, especially those of the hellenistic era. I think hoplites vs legions would be the ultimate infantry match-up!

True. Though I think ultimately a well-formed phalanx would beat any legion in a face-to-face match. The length of the spears and size of the shields would give them range and great defense against projectiles, and the pilum would likely not have a great effect on them... or would it? *ponders*

In those days it wasnt the individual soldier that won the war it was the commander. In the ancient world Greek hoplites were among the very best in the world, till Phillip came around with his new and improved Macedonian army. Alexander the great took them and bravely conquered the world.

Dear friend, I think you need to refresh your history. The Athenians and the Thebans in Chaeronia were routed and killed respectively only after they had been attacked from the flanks and the rear by the heavy companion cavalry. That is because the pike phalanx was primarily a defensive formation suitable for 'hammer and anvil' tactics. When in the hellenistic era the role of the cavalry distingerated and the phalanx became the main offensive weapon, it was a huge tactical drawback.

If the Romans could somehow manage to break the pike formation and bring the fighting to close quarters (as opposed to the 4-5m distance the sarissas were supposed to pinch the enemy) the phalangites would be massacred, bearing only a 60cm diameter shield without a grip, a phrygian helmet or laconian pilos and a linothorax. But unfortunately Philip's and Alexander's success had conviced every other greek army to copy the macedonian type of phalanx.

@the5thillusion I do not disagree. BUT you miss 1 little detail. In the 2 main Roman victories over the Macedonian army, the cavalry REFUSED to participate in the crucial moment. Cavalry were the aristocrats that resisted the kings' power. Following the Pudna vicory "suddenly" all of a sudden 100s of pro-Romn citizens appeared from nowhere betraying their compatriots.
Romans simply had NOT found any answer to the phalanx. Flaminius still remembered his shock years after, in his nightmares...

Actually the Hoplites were alwas largly succesful against the roman army.Just that the Romans had so much more man power you just couldn't beat them. and the romans could easily use large amounts of calvery to swing behind and murder the hoplites, or use long range weapons such as bows,balistics and such. Hard to beat Rome back then.
