I had no idea what I was In for when I clicked play...2:17 gave me a freaking heart attack, his voice affects me so in a way no one else does....k I'll go try and calm down now :o
Well, thanks a lot MrBitchen, I've only had this song tumbling around in MY HEAD FOR THE LAST 3 DAYS!!!!! How does one suddenly go Mandy? Why him? Why now? After all these years, I can't figure it.
Falsetto and tremolo, what can you say, it's Mandy...amazing. Met him outside a grocery store in San Diego in '86, such a nice man. Mandy beat the deadest dog in history dredging up Suwanee and Mammy, oye, that won't be missed. At least he didn't appear in black face like Neil Diamond. The jazz singer? Oh my aching head. Boys, what did your mothers do to you?
This is from "Something Wonderful," a tribute to Oscar Hammerstein on his 100th birthday. All the performances were as special as this one. A great show.
@SukieTawdry1000 Thank you for that information! I have a few of the other performances from that show. I wish I had taped the entire thing. I do remember there was one ballet performance that I wasn't too crazy about, but I liked everything else a lot.
@MrBitchen Yeah, there were revivals of "Showboat" and "Carousel" that year and cast members from both shows performed that night. They did the ballet sequence from "Carousel" ("If I Loved You"). You either like ballet or you don't.
@SukieTawdry1000 The piece from "Carousel" ("If I Loved You") that I remember was two vocalists: both with brown hair. The guy wore suspenders and the girl ("Julie Jordan") wore a dress. They weren't dancing, only singing. I still have that clip, I just don't know who they are. It's a great number.
Part 3. He wanted to sing a song to her, and sat down on the stage floor beside her. He shared with the audience about how he'd met us the previous night (meanwhile my other friend Lisa and I are basket cases on the floor. LOL!!), then sang "Children Will Listen." He finished by giving her a huge kiss on the lips!!!! What an incredible man he is!!!! :o)
Part 2. I couldn't believe this. Michelle was disabled and not able to walk very well, so our seats were in the orchestra, just a few rows from the front. His concert was spellbinding. When he came out for his bows at the end, I suggested to Michelle that she go closer to the stage to see him when he emerged, as she was rather short. He ran out, got down on his hands and knees, gave her a huge hug, then he asked me to help him lift her onto the stage ... con't ...
This was released the same year my two best friends and I met him. It was in Toronto and we didn't have the money to see his show, so we figured we'd just meet him at the stage door. It was rather cold so everyone at the stage door was ushered into the theatre. When our turn came, he asked us what we thought of his show. I told him that we didn't have the money, and just wanted to meet him. "No money?! Well, then ... you'll just have to see tomorrow's show on me!!" ... con't ...
I was fortunate enough to get to see Mandy live at the Kennedy Center around the same time this video was made. I'll never forget that night. His voice still runs chills up my spine. He is so unique. A fabulous singer and actor too!
I became an MP fan watching Chicago Hope, but I found out later after PB that his real roots are musical stage. That's obviously the real reason he doesn't stay very long on various TV series. He wants to get back to the music. A perfect voice whether it's the lyrical "head voice" or his magnificent "chest voice". Brilliant! Beautiful the way he hits the last note on the actual finish chord of the orchestra and holds it perfectly until they "get there" in the arrangement. A Phantom moment...
