Hi everyone. I'm currently 17 years old and looking to join a tennis college in the U.S. Please check out my tennis recruitment video on my channel if you're interested! Thank you for your time! :)
Since I watched your instructions videos, I'm improving my tennis play level every week...thanks a lot for take hee time to do this tutorial... greetings from Chile (southamerica)
@Champ2056 don't know about you but I think it's a lot easier to hit with more topspin if you've got an extreme grip like a semi-western or western. Continental and eastern can also produce as much spin but when the opponent hits with a lot of spin as well and the ball bounces high on you, it's hard to control the high ball with an eastern grip. I switched to semi-western and it works even better
@DestroyerAlexandros oh you know what it turned out i was using the eastern grip.but now im starting to use semi western since it works better.but i want to try out western grip before i finally choose my grip for my usual forehand.
@DestroyerAlexandros yeah but i guess it wont hurt to try out the grip just to see how it works.im pretty sure ill stick with semi western though.muscle the ball?
@Champ2056 by "muscling" the ball I mean that you use a stiff arm and most of the power comes from the arm. Whereas not muscling the ball in my opinion would be where you use both your body weight and your arm weight to hit powerful shots.
@DestroyerAlexandros oh ok well ive been playing for about 3 years and i tried the western grip.so far i like it but im still gonna see how it works out.also how old are you?
hey will , just to say that your videos are just awesome , but i have a few doubts
I started playing top spin quite recently since i wanted to start playing different, but when i play top spin i kinda find that ball kept hittin' my racquet frame most of the time. is it because i incline the racquet a lot so to create a heavy topspin or is it the timing?????
hey coach, i have a question....whenever i try to hit a low ball, it tends to go out of the court ALL THE TIME..I guess the fault is in my contact point or something, because i swing exactly the way you tell me to. Can you tell me why this could be happening???
(i'm terribly sorry if this is a stupid question, but i'm just a beginner and you're my only coach...hehe)
well you're probably falling back after hitting the ball. If you don't follow through with your body the whole swing, the ball tends to get really high and you don't get any control. Try to see if you're doing your swing as it should be, hitting the ball with some spin and high over the net with the body follow through.
omg...i guess you are right..no wonder my shots go 25 meters away from the court!!:D So follow through is the key right??i'll work on it,thanks a whole lot man!!!!:D
yeah, if you say your swing is ok, then you only have to put you body weight on the ball by not falling back. With a good amount of top spin, you should get those consistent grounstrokes! Practice that, start slow, don't try to hit with much power, focus on the body follow through, then when you're doing it right, you'll naturally add more power to your strokes eventually :D
Also, because you say you're hitting low balls, maybe you're not getting into position early enough, so try to get into a position where the ball will bounce to your waist height. Low balls are very difficult to generate topspin from because it's harder to get underneath the ball (which is why hitting the ball at waist height is standard technique)
just you a semi western and angle your racket so that its tilted forward and brush over the ball,. This will allow you to add tremendous spin and power.
People, when he says that the strings point into the same direction in a spin forie and a normal forie, its wrong, you have to close your racket head a little , like 55 degrees, so you cant confidently hit a low to high shot, but with alot daster racket head speed.
Closing the racquet head to 55 degrees will send the ball nearly straight down into the court. The difference in a "closed" racquet head will be almost insignificant at the point of contact. This is a point he is trying to make in the video.
umm i have a bit of a problem now heheh i used it a few days ago and i always end up hitting my side of the court or the net ive never hit past it :(... help please
And 'its" should be capatalized since it's the start of a new sentence, and you should have inserted a comma in between the "t" and the "s" to indicate the combining of two words. Also, you should have a period at the end of your sentence.
I disagree in part with your comment. While I agree that the western grip will allow you to generate more topspin and consistency, I disagree it will make u hit harder. The simple fact that you're applying topspin to the ball will reduce the pace at which the ball travels, as opposed to a more conservative grip like the eastern, where the ball travels with less spin at a flatter angle, but is pushed faster by the racquet.
I think u miss understood me I mean u can hit harder, but I am not saying that u will create more pace on the ball. U can hit harder n the ball travels slower becouse of the spin but it more consistent going in.
Really exaggerate the topspin motion, make sure you have a lot of racket head speed going low to high. It also helps to put a safe amount of wrist action to try and whip the racket a little more, but not enough to risk injury. Also make sure you are using the correct grip and footwork.
Hey will, I got an extreme eastern forehand grip and I was wondering if it is possible to generate a lot of topspin while still getting good penetration? Is there a secret to this? or am I just hallucinatin?
Im not a professional but I use the windshield wiper alot and I use it fairly well, so I would give you an advice to swing out more and push your weight into it. sorry if this doesn't work for you, but that's what made me a better player.
I lost a USTA match in 3 sets. the person i played pushed the ball a lot and i was usually the one to mess up first. my coach said i should learn to hit with a lot of topspin and really deep into the court. Im wondering should i do a windshield wiper and is there any specific grip i should use for hitting it with that much topspin and also if that ball is a sitter should i switch grips real fast and hit that ball flat with power.
Hi Ken. Switching grips is a bad idea. Choose one grip and stick with it. I don't have a specific grip recommendation -- do what you like best. In terms of the windshield wiper, make sure you have the fundamentals down first. Then you can start learning the windshield wiper (and you should learn it).
ive been using the same standard forehand since i started dont know which one it is but i think its for flat balls. In your other video you said people should change their grip so it can affect their type of groundstroke. you said you should use more of an extreme grip for topspin like rafa. So im just wondering shouldnt i switch to like western or something so i can maximise topspin?
More extreme grips tend to make it easier to generate spin but it's certainly not necessary to have an extreme grip to hit with a lot of topspin. Choose the grip you find most comfortable.
Should you try and change the contact point since you are going from low to high? i.e. instead of trying to have the ball hit the center of the strings (sweet spot), should you try have the ball hit the strings a little on the top half of the strings so that the ball has a chance to "roll" down the strings as you go from low to high in the swing path?
Hey Brendan. You want to hit the ball in the center of the strings every single time. The ball is only on the strings for approximately 5 milliseconds so it can't really "roll down." The physics of imparting topspin on the tennis ball is explained quite well in "The Physics of Tennis" by Howard Brody. I suggest you buy that book if you are interested in reading up on that subject and others related to the science of tennis. -- Will
I have been watching your videos for about a year now and i think they are the best on the web. I have also told at least 10 other people to subscribe to them. Thanks for creating such excellent material for students.
I have been watching many of your wonderfully-crafted clips. And wanted to find more. You would be able to talk more about the strategies involved in tennis (especially in singles as there are many doubles strategies out there).
I have reached high-level of tennis but need some guidance on strategies in order to advance my game. E.g. If an opponent hits a wide ball, what are the appropriate shots? Hit cross court near the service box? High backhand lob? Any ideas of case studies? Thanks!
Hi zeb. We're thinking about ways to work in strategy. Stay tuned!
As for getting pulled wide of the court, a heavy / high topspin groundstroke crosscourt works well. Make sure you keep it deep. On the backhand side, a well-placed slice can be a good option as well. You need to give yourself time to recover back to the middle(ish) of the court.
Get down via your legs. Don't bend your upper body over. Also, hitting topspin off low balls require lots of racket-head speed. That can take awhile to develop so just stay persistent and work at your game. You'll get there!
Get a gym membership! Running -- both long distance and sprints -- is important as well. I can't really get into all the various tennis exercises here. There are tons of them.
