I am an American from NYC I was married to a Danish woman, she even says people in Denmark are more rude than people in New York. I lived in Denmark for 4 years. It is a nice place to visit and stay for awhile and yes there are certain people that are nice there but ask any Dane and they will admit it, when you say Hey how are you doing they become awkward and don't know how to answer back. Another thing I hate They stare entirely too much at people.
I wish I could live there; I know exactly what the garbage-collector meant.. This is the way I try to go about my life, being nice, taking pride in my work, but in the USA nobody seems to get it at all. I read many books, and am well-educated but I work as a gardener and on computers and cars. I wish I could live there. You don't have to worry about getting money for you children's education because you get it for free (through taxes of course). You don't pay for driving on our roads. You get help when you are old. Im Danish and American. I have lived in the states but most of my life i have lived in Denmark. I love denmark. Even though its cold most of the year i love the way the Danish system and people help eachother. Not like in the states where there really isent that much help for the people that really need it. "Happy" is too broad. What "happy" means to Denmark is not the same for Americans. Their idea of happiness is "would you change anything?" I'm an ethnic Iranian who is born in Denmark. In all my life I've never experienced racism, sure I've experienced some occassional ignorance, which I've always responded to with sarcasm and a smile.
During my upbringing all my friends, co-students, collegues and acquaintances considered me to be a dane. I finished school, high school and university with no problems and high grades. I got a job that pays far above average 2 weeks after I got my degree...

"Happy" is too broad. What "happy" means to Denmark is not the same for Americans. Their idea of happiness is "would you change anything?" They are a very self-rightoeus society and somewhat arrogant. To say they are unhappy would mean they were "wrong." To be happy for a Dane is to be "right." As an American who has lived in Denmark for 3 years, I have observed what appears to be mostly very ornery people. Denmark is "the happiest place" is a myth.
