It's real - I've been there. Theory is that the vortex affects the space between atoms in anything that enters the vortex. Thus, any instrument you take into the vortex to measure will also be affected by the same ratio. Proof that its not an illusion is that blind people can feel the effects as well.

I stumbled on to that place on a road trip and thought it was some cheesey tourist trap. I was totally floored, You can actually feel some sort of physical compression as you walk towards the center of the vortex. You have to see it to believe it.

If I were to come up with a theory, it would be that objects nearing the centre are more dense due to some unexplained phenomenon, so if you measure the length of a stick close to the centre with a ruler, it would still measure the same if you were to measure the same stick with the same ruler outside of the vortex. I'm a highly scientific guy and I don't believe any of this kind of stuff, and I still don't, but it sure was cool when I went there.

I went there last summer; we drove all the way from British Columbia, Canada. It was unbelievable. A lot of the stuff was crap and made up stories, but when you actually stand there and do the experiment, it's crazy. I'm 5' 11" and my dad's 6', when I was on one side and he was on the other, it seemed as if I was slightly taller, but when we switched, my eye level was like looking at his neck. We then measured and our heights were normal on both sides.
