@cruzinwrx This line runs through a place called the Chicago Area, where whiners and sissies live. Because people bitched incessantly about the horns, they are not prohibited except in emergencies from blowing the horns. Despite the fact that often times, pedestrians will play chicken with the trains (especially in Downers Grove and Berwyn!)
@mt90945557 Despite the fact that I'm a Chicagoland resident, I loathe its reputation about being the breeding ground of impatient, rude sissies who keep busy 7 days a week, and it's horrible on taxes and stuff. Sadly, Wisconsin is getting a lot of quiet zones too, particularly in the bigger cities (Fond Du Lac, Waukesha, Burlington, Green Bay, etc...).
@mt90945557 Well that QZ through Berwyn has been in place as long as I can remember. And I grew up there in the '70's. So the quiet zone is nothing new. Oak Park ave is my old stomping grounds. Trains are just a way of life if you live along the racetrack.
Metrolink in LA doesn't let you ride up in the very front of it's cab cars anymore because of accidents that have proven the Cab Cars lesser durability compared to a locomotive. I assume this isn't the case with Metra?
@phillyslasher Most Metra lines lock out the cab cars except on the UP (former CNW) lines. Also Metra gets so much priority around here, there is hardly a train in front of them to hit!
what my friend is saying is this is a push-pull operation commonly used by the LIRR in New York. The Locomotive is on one end supplying HVAC to the passenger cars, so as not having to turn the train around the process of push-pull is efficient.
It's like the MARC, except a lot bigger in scope. I think there are only one or two lines that go beyond 50 miles. There are no roomettes, just seats; it is a commuter railroad.
Thanks for the ride. When I was a kid we use to go from Naperville on BN, or from Winfield on CNW. Back when they still had the E's and F's. I remember on one CNW train in the morning, they would throw morning papers to all the tower and depot guys along the way as they went. Yours must have been Sunday or something, because there's barely any other trains.
The Aussie way too! When some rich idiots in Sydney tried to stop trains giving a single toot before entering a tunnel in a wealthy suburb, the train drivers suddenly found the horn not only capable of a single blast, but suddenly they could also play "la cucaracha", "Shave and a haircut", etc etc. :)
@5292Nate just give the horn a couple toots nothing long just too keep folks on their toes cause there is always gonna be some dumbass that will ignore the gates and try and beat the train or somebody that wants too do sucide by train and fuck up rush hour
@5292Nate its happend in downers grove back in the 80's before metra back when it was still BN and they had their own passenger trains some lady got taken out and its on YT

Hello and I was wandering if riding the metra would be the same as riding the DC metro? Or is it like it has cars with roomettes and cars like that?

@metroliner89 I would say riding the Metra is like riding VRE or MARC in DC, it's nothing like the underground metro.
