i was on the show - my cousin Robin got tickets as a birthday present and they drove her, me and my brother down from NH to sit in the audience. I was about 8 at the time. I remember being very excited and searching the Boston skyline for the rocket as we drove in. it was a bit of a disappointment when we discovered he did the whole thing on a studio.
anyone else remember that when the spaceship door would open, whoever entered would make an armsweep and have to make their own "shhhhhhhhhhhh" airlock sound? my brother and i would "shhhhhhhhh" along and almost pee our pants laughing! remember the "roger ramjet" and "dodo, the kid from outer space" cartoons? we begged our folks to take us to pleasure island in wakefield to see him but no go. thats the live pic shown outdoors in the clip. thanks for the smile and tear!
Not just the Major and Rex, but also Bozo and Capt. Bob and Miss Jean and Lord Bumblebrook and Feep and Willie Whistle and Big Brother - fun for all ages, a homegrown bonanza!
Sauroid: Yes, he was a terrific personality, not only as Major Mudd but also as Feep and the little remembered Lord Bumblebrook. From all I've heard from those who knew him personally, he was just the sweetest guy you'd ever want to meet. I envy you actually seeing him in person!
MajorMuddCalling: pies, Ricky and the Termites, The Nervous 1 -- yes, yes, yes! The way I recall it, the song by Ernie Kovacs' Nairobi Trio introduced "Letter Answering Time", but I could be wrong.
This guy was awesome. Boy brings back a lot of memories from the 60s growing up in Boston. I saw him once in full regalia on the street and almost peed my pants I was so excited. Mom would whip up a glass of Tang and a bowl of coco pops and I would sit infront of the tube transfixed. Too bad that he died so young.
Water Sausages? Pies in the face? Ricky and the Termites? Who lived in a matchbox. Was it "Hi To Time" on Thursdays? And the 3 Stooges every afternoon? The "Lunatic 1" Space Craft? Or was it the Nervous 1? That was when they moved it to the morning! Long ago and far away! IBBY!
Captain Bob was another favorite, particularly the years when he drew the adventures of hand puppets Jasper and Gramps and was often involved with them in their hand-drawn world via the magic of Chroma-key.
Love it! Major Mudd was the coolest of the children's show hosts in Boston. And let's not forget his alter ego, Feep, host of the horror show Fantasmic Features. Boston was a great place to grow up in the 1960s in no small part due to the great Ed McDonnell.

He did, in fact, do the voice and wore the costume of Feep.

I think he also did the voice for Feep from Fantasmic Features.
