gutting your 550 cord completely defeated the whole idea behind replacing your laces with it. 550 cord strength is not in the casing, it's in the complete unit(mostly the internal strands). Complete 550 cord can also be separated into its separate components if need in an emergency. An empty para-cord casing is far less useful than a good set of laces.
@poorprepper The idea isn't about having 550lbs of strength in your damn boot laces. The sleeve has great abrasion resistance and is available when you don't have spare proper boot laces.
@bighitter42 He never said anything about replacing damaged laces or not having proper laces. He's giving people the impression that this is superior to the original laces. I assure you, it is NOT.
The 550 bootlaces sound like a really good idea. Ive never tried it, but i really think it would be an improvement from when my bootlaces would snap in the middle of a climb, or while taking down a heavy canvass wall tent.
@daddyisalwayshere No they are not. As far as I know there are no restrictions on 550 cord. You can buy it from online sites or at your local Military surplus store.
I put 550 on my Acadias. Have you ever tried shock cord? It's great for slipping your boots on and off. You can adjust the tightness with a cord lock. BTW all your videos are great, keep 'em coming!
square knots, bows, double bows - I tried it all still worked lose on a long huff the durability was great but having to stop every couple of miles to tie your boots back up - not so great I eventually settled on a good thick pair of leather laces with lots of mink oil on them
I tried it with and without the inside strands the only thing Im thinking is I was in the British Army so maybe the para cord we had was different ile give it a go with some U.S stuff n see if it works
Cool video! I do have a question though... wouldn't gutting the 550 cord basically negate the value of having it as a replacement boot lace? Without the inner strands for the added strength & durability, wouldn't it basically be the same as regular boot laces? I've haven't had a chance to try it out yet, but I'm going to as soon as I can! :-)
It all depends on the environment you're in. If you're around water, as our article states on the Web site, the paracord could swell and it's better to remove the inner strands. Even without the inner strands, 550 is still stronger than regular boot laces.

I have some 550 cord on my boots, I figure it would be nice to have them always on me just in case.

I did this when I was in the Army too only problem was they kept coming untied because the surface of 550 cord is so slippery
