  • Have the Pumpkins ever seen this video? It really reminds me of the Rhinoceros video.

  • Who ever just said this band sucks is an idiot the smashing pumpkins are a true band in love with music not money and no matter how sad and depressed I am iv always had Billy Corgans voice he understands me.

  • Wow - this is great. I remember seeing them in highschool during this era before they hit it big. Good times...great years.

  • My favorite Gish song, and a wonderful version. Thanks so much for uploading this.

  • wow, thank god for youtube.

  • Great job, this is awesome.

  • I miss when music actually had meaning and it wasn't just some corporate entity behind the artist telling them what to do. Now it's all just fake's who only go by image rather than music. They'll sell anything with a catchy beat now a days.

    Long Live The Pumpkins!!!

  • you recon that smashing pumpkin were into the telescopes (taste era)?

  • you recon that Billy Corgan was a fan of the telescopes (taste era)?

  • Great job putting the video together!

  • listening to this version of this song is literally like having an orgasm for me..

  • I believe the audio is from the pre-gish recording called "the ignoffo tape." I think it's great.

  • I think it would've been sweet if after the dynamics change and the 'loud' part comes in the framerate would go back to normal as it does in some shots.

It'd sync better with the music imo.

Cool video. Everything about it reminds me of growing up in that era.

  • if they weren't signed yet this is an official video in my book ^^

  • what's this song called?

  • @WwotEvarr Rhinoceros.

  • @Ducksel

    thank you! :-)

  • woot

i love old rare vintage videos

  • Billy is so beautiful

  • nos bootlegs essa versao me levou alucura varias vzSSSSS

  • I like pisces best, then melon then gish then siamese

  • This is fantastical!

  • Great video.

  • I think it was the Metro...been a long time...not 100% sure

  • the stage looks like the metro...or am i wrong?

  • Man!!!!!!! I love this song. This band inspired me to play guitar the way I do.

  • man this is like a time machine! takes me back to my teen years everytime

  • excellent

  • Nice! I love Rhinoceros.

  • Funny not hearing the tremolo in this version, I keep expecting it, having to remind myself this is an early version.

  • god, how the time flies

  • thats cool men

  • Kinda looks like one of those random videos you make fun of as you sang karaoke.. Nothing personal.. Definite props though for seeing SP before they made it big!

  • Congratulations to you all...this is just unique and amazing!!! Love

  • que belleza, smsshing pumpkins es la mejor banda del universo...... escucho su musica hace 15 años y siempre me embeleza de la misma manera

  • We shot the footage of the girl around UW Oshkosh. I haven't been back to Oshkosh since 1990, so my memory is failing as the the precise neighborhoods. The shot of walk into her face in slow motion was downtown oshkosh and the stuff with the mirrors was in one of the studios at the school.

  • where abouts were some of theses neighborhoods the girl was in? could be some of our old stomping grounds

  • Man very well done! Great footage as well. Huge SP fan and I've liked everything they've put out. I love the first three songs of Teargarden too. Hope to see them when they start touring again!!!!

  • It's the shots of Billy and James headbanging that got you the five star rating.

  • lol kinda cool if legit

    cool early footage

  • Fantastic video mate. I just adore the music video style of the 90's and this vid really ticks all the right boxes.

  • so true due early 90 video tlaks about music and people new videos talks about so many shit i dont get what the heck is the screen

  • @pingui0987

me neither.. is that supposed to be a sentence?

  • man this is so awesome i recently rediscover smashing Pumpkins.I've being obsess with RH and i wanted to add more music to my channel this the true roots of Pumpkins waow now I Have two obsessions RADIOHEAD and SMASHING PUMPKINS!

  • @Amnesiacmidnitetoker check out the B side pieces iscariot, im pretty sure this is from that album.

Its funny that some of the best pumpkins are on it considering its a B side.

its hard to believe most of the songs he writes these days compared to the songs he wrote back then, i think half the prob is he focuses too much on an acoustic and a voice these days, it makes you forget just how amazing he was at blending sound to create the back catelogue...phew..im sorry, i'll shut it now

    old SP :D

  • man i wish they all get back together the original members.lets hope one day in the near future they tour.I already put aside $800.00 away in case radiohead come around I've travel to Chicago from Miami FL. a couple times just to catch them and chill for 3 days lol yes im a fanatic fan money is no option because watching them live is fucking priceless!!im make another account for smashing pumpkins.concerts

ive seeing radiohead live 5 times.1997.2001.2003.2003.2008

  • The two greatest bands of the last thirty years, bar none. Except Zeitgeist blows donkey balls.

  • @fullonnight

You'd say the same of Machina I if it were to come out in 2007 and Zeitgeist in 2000. Just like most people who knew about Gish before everyone else; Todays Zeitgeist bashers are 1993's "Siamese Dream? Corgan's a fag and a sell out" fans.

  • @Amnesiacmidnitetoker oh i also like radiohead and SP billy corgan likes radiohead too lol

  • That's cool! That's really neat that you met them before they were big :)

  • Saw them in St. Louis, around 1990, with Pearl Jam and Red Hot Chilipeppers. I really went for the Pumkins because I was hooked on Gish at the time. Pearl Jam was not even beginning to get big at that point. I'll never forget that night. Siamese Dream is awesome, no doubt. But Gish is still the best in my humble opinion.

  • What was so genius about early pumpkins is the type of music that was popular in the late 80's was NOTHING like anything at that time nor ever. This music is timeless and will always sound good. BTW, i'm an independant music lover from an early age, and still think that siamese dream is the greatest alt rock album......................EVER!

  • @sigwart ROLLING STONE ranked it 400 something. LOL but I agree it is underappreciated

  • @i2ad10head Rollingstone is for shitheads, they rank Yoko Ono 5 stars every time, ;D deaf bastards

  • @sigwart Siamese dream would also have to be my favourite too, Soma was the first song I learnt on guitar. so awsome.

  • @danr00 im gonna sound retarded, but the first song i EVER learned fully was today. im such a cliche xD

  • @sigwart Try this band Poets Of The Fall. I am not a part of the band just a fan of theirs.

  • @nicholsjoshua15 I just check that band out and they suck

  • @dubified89 You probably don't like Stone Temple Pilot either do you. Well to each his/her own.

  • Did you ever send it to the Pumpkins? Cause this is fantastic work!!

  • the bass is ridiculous

  • because D'arcy Iz BEASTZZZZ like that

  • i like this version (the song), it's more 'shoegazing' in a way.. the album version is still best though,

  • yeah this does remind me of the unfinished symphony video i love both songs

  • Very nice! Excellent choice of music too, I think I prefer this version. Did you meet the band or discuss anything with 'em?

    Good Work!

  • the bass is awesome in this song

  • and real easy.

  • @vinsanity0150 There's actually little to obtaining that tone. Sounds like the strings on D'arcy's bass were freshly changed before recording.

  • @Politcalamity Or Billy's bass.

  • So 90's. Kicks ass my man, nice work. Thanks for sharing

  • great, thogu theres another verson n,no? with water, lvoely music

  • That's my favorite shot also. Funny part is I almost got hit by a car shooting it. :)

  • I love the slowed down shot of the girl walking down the street....it looks really similar to the 'Massive Attack - Unfinished Sympathy' video which came a full 2 years after this!

  • This is so great and reminds me of everything of my middle school years.

  • this version sounds like the moon demo version

  • I was just gonna say the same thing. it's so cool listening to it with out all the studio magic out into it

  • can someone tell me the name of this song please?

  • its called rhinocerous. its off of gish

  • this is my fav pumpkins song ever. Which version is it?

  • it does look like the concert from the psycho tape but i wasen't sure,it would be nice if the psycho tape had better quality but its still nice to see

  • i imagine it would have been hard filming with a 16mm they were first made in the 1920s, thanks for the info

  • can you remember the date of the concert?

  • I don't recall the exact date, sometime in 1989. The footage of the girl was in winter and we would have shot the concert footage around that time. Keep in mind this was 20 years ago and we had no idea how big they would become.

I do recall my film camera jamming constantly and wishing I had worn ear plugs, because I has standing next to the speaks at one point. :)

  • it would have been awesome if it had audio, oh well

  • please get the concert video footage converted soon, it would be great to hear the cassette too but personally i'm more interested in the footage. it would be cool to know what songs they played at that concert, they played some good stuff at their early concerts, i am my end is a great early song, anyway it would be great to see akerrwolf upload the footage to youtube thanks.

  • The footage I have is MOS (no audio) from the concert. This was back in the 16mm days. At some point I'll get the stuff converted to a digital format.

  • the concert seems to be from the Psycho Tape, which is a concert that was filmed in 1989 of SP live. So it's essentially be the same thing. :) so you could always look that up.

  • gorgeous video! being 26, i somewhat missed out on really being a part of the whole early 90's music movement...but i can still easily recall being young and knowing something really cool and new was in the air. this video captures that vibe perfectly. this was the last time music this genuine and transcendent actually made waves in the culture. hope it happens again soon.

  • Wow, This is kinda historic! Awesome upload, thanks for sharing!!

  • The drums sound amazing on this version. I wonder what the pumpkins music would have become if not for the poor taste in production/direction.

  • Thanks for posting - Billy with hair....smile...

20 years later the Pumpkins still RAWK...

  • Look at all that HAIR!!!

  • this is awesome! thanks!

  • Great video, thanks for posting it.

  • I can't post the extra footage because it is on 16mm film and 1" video tape. Someday I will get it all converted.

I thought the band was fine. James was the nicest. Billy was kinda jerk back then, but not to bad.

  • do you think you could somehow convert the cassette to digital? is that possible? id love to hear that first tape.

  • I have the master footage which has more "out-takes".

I really like the album of songs they gave us (even better than the final album versions). We had no idea they would be as successful as they did.

  • Can you post them? Was the band friendly?

  • did you also think they were going to be as popular as they became at the time?

  • have any other eraly day footage of them?

  • what songs did the pre-album version have on it

  • When we filmed the concert we didn't record audio it was all MOS. The footage of them is from their whole concert not just one song.

I do have the entire pre-album album on tape. I liked the pre-album version better than the what on the final album.

  • do you have the whole concert or video with audio

  • I met them a few times. Once or twice in Chicago and then again in Madison. This was just before their first album, so they were just a popular local band at the time. The friend I did the video with went to high school with James. Years later we saw them backstage in Los Angeles. I won't say I knew them or they were friends or anything.

  • you knew them?

  • Amazing! I like this version of the song much better than the album version. ^^

  • Cheers for every early pumpking fan..Im having a very good time listening to this classic, Corgan, D'arcy, Iha, Chamberlain... I was not satisfied in 1990 when they got 9th place on best rock song, on the new years best alternative countdown (120minutes). Anyway, Ned's Atomic, Primus, Nirvana, Pearl, Soundgarden, Alice... etc, best time of my life !

  • akerrwolf could you please tell me what date this concert is from, great video

  • That's a nice video. Well made.

I like the bass playing in this song.

  • is there any way you could upload the unreleased version of the album?

  • what?

  • Luv this song and video SP are fuckin awesome. thanks for putting this on here Wicked Kool Cnt wait to see them 11/14 and 11/15 in Boston...

  • i'd really like to hear this tape you've been talking about.

any chance you can upload it to spfc or something?

    let us all enjoy it!

  • Amazing Amazing just brilliant video. Your amazing at directing

  • It's the Gish Demos that I believe HAVE been bootlegged and released. There's another great version of Rhinoceros with this crazy organ solo

  • where?

  • This is a really neat video. After watching it again, I realized how much I like the black and white effects, as well as the slow motion captures. There's a lot of cool footage here! Would you be willing to share this tape? Perhaps it's the Reel Time Sessions?

  • i think that is the one from reel time sessions. i've heard it before. i actually like the lead part at the end better on this one than the album version.

  • This is amazing! Love this song! Great story! Thanks a lot!:D

  • Only true Smashing Pumpkins fans will really appreciate the infrequency of this song, and understand the time frame in modern music history that it represents, I can't thank you enough for sharing this, long live rock and roll ........and she knows and ..she ..knows....she knows!!!!

  • Glad you liked it. I just recently found the "album" that the band gave us to use for the music bed. They let us pick whatever song we wanted to make a video. The "album" is very different sounding than the final release of the real album.

  • thanks for sharing it, this is gold.

  • You should upload this on their official website. i'm sure billy would be amused.

  • So do you have this cassette still?

  • Ok, no one is getting this. It's not the video thats unreleased it's the song! which I find amazing. How did you get this? Is there anyway you can send me a copy?

  • The band gave us a cassette of their album before it was released. When the album was released it sounded different. I never liked the album version as much as the songs on the cassette.

  • Thats awesome

Smashing Pumpkins fans would love to hear those songs. Thats a pretty rare cassette you have.

  • Who is that mysterious girl, say?

  • We saw her walking around campus and asked her if she would be interested in being in the video. At first she was kinda nervous about it, not know us, but in the end she had fun.

  • Okey. So this was as a school project for you guys? Was it ever showed like on a local channel or something? Where did this video eventually end up? Besides here on youtube, I mean. I like the early Pumpkins with songs such as "Snap", "My Eternity", "Spiteface", and oh, "Glynis" of course! So you must have seen them when they played at the Metro a couple of times, early on. I've got a version of "Rhinocerose" with an organ solo instead of the regular guitar solo. Think it's on "Reel Time Studios

  • Yes it was a school project for a college lighting class.

It was never shown anywhere, not even sure if the band saw it. It's been a long time, I can't remember. :)

  • This is truly amazing! Do you think you could upload this to, say, MySpace, or any other video service that has higher quality? That would me astounding.

Thank you for posting this! Just out of curiosity, are you still in touch with any of the band members?

  • thank you akerrwolf! for the video and the story behind it^^

  • this is incredible, thanks for posting it!

  • Wow, thank you for finally sharing this!

  • whoa! i love it when stuff like this turns up.

why did you make this video akkerwolf, was it for a personal project or did the band commission you to make it with the intent of promotional use?

i like the billy/james slo-mo headbanging shots, haha.

  • I made this video with a college friend for a class in film lighting. My friend went to High School with James. The band was about to release there first album.

We shot it in Oshkosh Wisconsin and Chicago. We got the blurred motion look by shooting 16mm at like 2 or 4 frames per second and the slowing down the playback.

My favorite shot is the one when I walked from across the street into the girls eyes. Almost got hit by a car, but it looks cool.

  • cool!

  • Super Cool! I've never heard Darcy's bass so clearly on that song. The different little fills on guitar and drums are awesome, too!

    Thanks!

  • It's really him singing and them in concert in Chicago, but we shot it on 16mm with no sound. We edited it later to a copy of the song the band gave us on cassette.

  • Boy, someone isn't familiar with Pre-Gish Pumpkins.

  • if you've listened to any pre gish recordings, you would know it's definitely billy singing.

  • hi shannon

  • wow!!!

  • cool vid you get there...must bring back a lot of memories to you
