If this is a scene from a movie shoot then that explains what and why the helicopter pilot was attempting such a stupid stunt plus the movie producer's insurance most likely covered the cost of the helicopter. Next time someone needs to do the math on the weight redistribution for the load a helicopter needs to pull with a boat in the water.

I am in the Army and fly a version of this helicopter. will tell you that it did not have the power to pull that boat. A helicopter hovering over water is not really in ground effect and was probably using most of the available power just to hover. Then attaching a huge weight to one skid and taking off made the rollover unavoidable. The helicopters that the coast gaurd uses are MUCH more powerful but even a seaknight or blackhawk could roll just as easy in this scenario.

If you ever watch more experienced helicopter pilots (these clearly were not!) they will lift heavy objects first before they smoothly transition to forward flight. This stunt, and that what it was a reckless stunt might have been able to be "pulled off" *lol* if a much much longer tow rope was used allowing the chopper to rise to a safer altitude before bearing the full brunt of the drag the boat provided. The longer tow rope would also provide a shallower towing angle to the aircraft.

@NromulousZ This type of operation is illegal. CPL and PPL students are required to learn airlaw, and this type of operation with this type of helicopter is prohibited by authorities and the Operating Manual of the helicopter in question.

The pilot is required to know this. If he didn't, that would make him even more of an inadequate airman than he already is by blatantly ignoring manufacturers restrictions. The only argument i can think of that would justify this is an emergency situation.

@unitedheavy The pilot can eliminate an inbalance by moving the rotor disc with his cyclic. This pilot had to give right cyclic to compensate for the man standing on the side. However, a sudden inbalance in your TRT (Total Rotor Thrust) is hard to adquately respond to.

Too hard for this particular aviator, obviously.

@fancythathat Yeah, but the pilot probably had to compensate for your mates weight with cyclic input which tilts the rotor disc. jck7111 is absolutely right, the helicopters lift distribution is extremely sensitive. At low speeds, constant cyclic inputs are needed to balance all of the forces.

@MaxKetteler because those pilots have in some cases several thousand hours in that paticular airframe and know all the little quirks that come with it. The SAR pilots are also usually military trained which in some ways can help in that situation. During 'winching' ops the helo is at a stable hover (within respect to the weather) and it is a fairly straight up pull when bringing up a basket/or penetrator to rescue someone, in addition they observe all risks involved and make a decision.
