For the people who dont understand what Stern is doing with his solos...all of you fuck off, I've seen live: Henderson, al dimeola, Mclaughlin, Morse, Vai, Petrucci, Satriani, Robert Fripp(Crimson), Howe (Yes), A. Lifeson (Rush) etc... and Mike Stern is the guy that actually is one of my favorite guitar players i`ve ever seen ...his music and his concerts are amazing...the man enjoy and transmits so much energy and hapiness
I love Stern's music but like him better as a writer than an improviser - he just doesn't have the vocabulary the players listed by stringskippa. I don't think I've heard a single Stern solo that doesn't include variations on the lick at 1:07 (and 1:55, and 2:19). To my ear Metheney and Henderson simply have more tools - they repeat themselves far less often. Holdworth is in a league of his own. More modern masters include Guthrie Govan and Greg Howe.
Does anyone here the drummer? Mike is killin but Dennis Chambers makes it all work at the end and he holds the groove. Double bass? Cymbal swells? Never loss the groove.
stringskippa, each one of those guys is so different from the next that they aren't even remotely comparable. Your statement is highly questionable on all musical levels.
What I'm just trying to point out is that Mike Stern's not the best. There are lots of other guitarists who are just on another level. Mike's good, but he's definitely not the best. It may be just a matter of taste. I'd prefer to listen to Robben Ford or Pat Metheny. Maybe, it's just that I don't understand what Mike's doing.
@stringskippa its matter of taste with players on level of methenyand stern. in my opinion, holdsworth and henderson are NOT on same level as stern and metheny.. sorry just not, but, again.. taste?
@augfive - You're entitled to your opinion and so am I. I think Stern's licks would sound better if there was no one accompanying him. It really doesn't make sense to me. I can appreciate Becker, Metheny, Holdsworth. But Stern sounds too random for me. Stern is never on the same level as Metheny. Holdsworth is way ahead of Stern. Taste?
@augfive Hey Augfive. Not much of a Holdsworth fan, but I gotta say Henderson is in some ways beyond Mike. I love Mike Stern, def one of my fave players, but Henderson on a raw conceptual level, combined with his absurd technique, is alone. I know it's a matter of taste in regards to what we each like to hear, but watch Henderson vids objectively, and it becomes apparent; he is doing things, crazy things that would be impossible to duplicate. Up there with Lagrene in terms of mastery, IMHO.

usually mike sterns playin gets on my nerve because of the useless rock hardcore bending or shredding he puts in it. which still can be cool mbut he uses them too often i think. but in this tune the essence of his playing find all its meaning and its great.

Oh, and at 0:10, 0:18 and 0:24. All variations on what I think of as "the Mike Stern Lick".

@beverdrae Dennis has a killer right foot; he plays single bass drum, but whit so many notes that seems double bass drum.
