  • hello Sully, i want to fix my les paul and paint it but i dont know if i should paint it first or get it fixed first?

  • @tonyjavirod Generally, you repair, then paint. Then again, you didn't say what was wrong with it to begin with.

  • @jsullysix im gonna change my pick up( i have a junior) and i need to fix the jack necause its all bad and doesnt work

  • @tonyjavirod Doesn't sound like you'll have paint work to do.

  • @jsullysix ok. thx

  • hey sully im customizing my ESP LTD guitar and i was just woundering what kind of clear coat do u recommend i wanna make it look like brand new

  • @3adys2 If you're using spray cans, reranch or stewmac

  • Hi sully, if the body have bindings.. how to paint it & keep the binding remain?

  • @mp3sucker Mask off the binding before you paint it.

  • @jsullysix

Hi Sully, i manage to mask off the binding... and now i going to put sanding sealer for the finish.. i will upload the photo soon.. thanks .. your video inspired me...

    ;-)

  • @mp3sucker I'd seal it first, then mask off the binding, then paint, then pull the tape, and clear.

  • what happened to the "maybe i'll route for binding" idea. just wondering.

  • @twinsmm1 It was going to be way more work than I really wanted to get into. Besides, I kinda warmed up to the all black idea.

  • man to put all that work in renovating your old axe..that's cool dude I apreciate that.

    keep up the good work!!!XD

  • @EmmaThomson2 Thanks! It wasn't mine originally; I actually sought out one needing repair. Glad you're enjoying it!

  • @jsullysix just saw how you took the paint of the back of the neck. I prefere unfinished necks aswel it feels right but you probably know wat i mean. love how you did it looks very smoove.you read my mind on the toggle switch aswel, that's the reason why i never bought a THE PAUL from gibson.XD

  • @EmmaThomson2 Thanks!

  • what are you using to cover the fretboard? great series btw!!!!

  • @54DUNLOP Blue painters tape.

  • Hey sully, love the series, it's always great to see a full renovation. I'm think I'm going to be spraying in my indoor garage, but I'm worried about the finish sticking to the walls and floor since it is a shared condo garage. Is it easy to clean off of concrete or should I move my project outside?

  • @HotPocketEXE you can make yourself a little enclosure by hanging dropcloths from the ceiling, and lay some on the floor, and you'll be good to go!

  • Hey im doing something very similar right now except i just stained the wood because i wanted a more natural look. i was wondering when using the nitrocellulose lacquer spay is there any brushing at all needed, or sanding in between coats? and also what kind of gloss would you recommend, whether it be semi gloss or satin?

  • I wouldn't brush anything on it, I'd spray it on. There's a ton of great info on the reranch site. I can't post a link in comments, but google "reranch" and you'll find their site. All of the finishing info you need is in there. I'd definitely use gloss clear.

  • Nice set up. I built a walk in spray booth on the side of my house with a top fan and a down side fan and a big filter on the top side. I never get nibs. I also keep the floor wet with a running garden hose attached to the booth.

  • I found decent plan to build one, and hope to be able to do so in the near future.

  • Hey dude what kind of paint you used to paint the guitar? sorry for the bad english..

  • your english is great. i used nitrocellulose lacquer.

  • a great work Sully!

can you tip the web where you buy the spray cans?

    Thx!

  • youtube won't let you post links in comments, but if you google "reranch" it should take you there.

  • thanx so much!

I read that They can't ship out of USA, I need to look for another shop in Europe :-(

  • damn your restoration is making me want to restorate my guitar as well :p i also have a pretty old les paul studio (however its in one piece) and i thought i could give it another color (it now is wine red) and 'fill up' the scratches.. now a question :d How do you remove the paint (in my case the wine red) from the guitar to get to the natural wood ? damn so jealous of your ability of fixing things :p

  • hey man. im plan on repainting my danelectro and was wondering how would i take all of the finish off or if i even need to take all of the finish off? any tips?

  • I'd be very careful, as from what I recall, Danelectros are not made of wood. You can get by with sanding the finish flat, and shooting your color and clear over the existing factory finish.

  • would that mean i could skip the filler and primer?

  • well, if you have and dings or notches... i would fill those up with bondo, or some other filler. then just sand it down and add primer... if you don't have any dings.. then just sanding the finish down to a "rough" (flat) colour and texture.. then paint should work.

With any paint.. the reason you need primer is because the paint needs something rough to stick to that won't just soak it up.

  • What kind of tape did you use to mask the fretboard and headstock? BTW, great video, you shoul make an how to dvd!

  • Blue painter's tape.

  • hey sully, thanks for the great videos! i was wondering how many coats of black you sprayed on prior to spraying the les paul with clear coat.

  • Thanks! I believe I've got 3 coats of color on it, but I don't remember for sure. Certainly no more than that.

  • I couldn't help but laugh at the fact that your garage door is always open except for when your spray painting, lol

  • yep! there's a reason behind that. the natural light is helpful when the door is open, but if you're spraying finish, you don't want the wind to blow the guitar around or kick up dust.

  • hey conor! a great question. no, i didn't get a headache, but i think that your question really points out the importance of using the proper equipment. i think that we can all agree that i set a lousy example as far as safety goes. i have a much better mask for this stuff, and will be using it in the future.

  • dang.. did you not have a headache after spraying lacquer indoors with just that mask? i do model cars (building my first guitar after christmas) and i use lacquer paints outside with that kind of mask and still get awful headaches from the fumes...

  • really really interesting sully......can we have a 30min posting of the paint drying.....zzzzzz....only joking !

  • yeah, i know it's super exciting to watch paint being shot. that's why i sped up the clear coating in installment #7.

  • blue painters tape. :)

  • what was the blue stuff on the neck?
