  • tx 4 reply. dont wory about it. i dont agre tolls are vital. i think they are a hidden tax.. ust to answer ur 3 points

    1) why should we deter motorists from using a specific road - such as the back roads of lucan to blanchardstown. u cud also say that having a toll on the m50 is a deterent for people to use the m50

    2) revenu for maintenance. what about the motor tax we pay

    3) construction costs. if the state constructed them, not private companies-we wudnt owe construction costs.c point 2also

  • @trevorgilligan ; my first point is relevant to the m50 in particular. the theory is that "if a road is free to use, then everyone will use it". if there was no toll on the m50 there wud b no deterant for anyone to use it and the m50 wud become a useless road due to traffic congestion.

    (2) if we take the motor tax we pay, that might sort out the potholes in the whole country.... thats it! bridge inspections, geotechnic reports etc... they all add up and motor tax simply doesnt cover the costs.

  • @trevorgilligan; it is justifiable to say that the people who use the road, should pay for its maintenance.... if your talking about using taxpayer money as opposed to private monies to build and maintain roads, then there'll be people up in donegal paying for a road that they never use.

    (3) if the state were to foot all construction costs, then the taxpayer would be paying for the entire road and people who never use that road wud be paying for its maintenance. that isn't justifiable

  • i would like to no if you have a background in transportation planning?

Apologies; i tried to fit a lot in here but theres not enough space so a quick summary will have to suffice.

Roads are tolled for a variety of reasons

    (1) to deter motorists from using the road

    (2) to obtain revenue for maintenance

    (3) Recoup construction costs

    (to name a few)

i will expand on these points if needed but my main point is to say that tolls are actually vital (for the most part) for efficient road network.

  • yes - u can exit the motor way to dodge a toll. however , it is made very difficult for motorists to do so. an example wud be going from lucan to blanchardstown to dodge the toll between the n4/n3
