has pics of ladder sight
see figure 3, see that tiny dot of light at the bottom, that is the peep sight. It would have been dead on, maybe 1-2 inches off at 100 yards. See figure 5, item e
You should have been able to figure that sight out in 20 seconds.
Aren't you ex military? Isn't that basically the same style of sight as is on the m79 grenade launcher or M60 MG? M203 very similar too.
Ahh, I see from your other comments you had a ladder sight, which makes it a 1903.
You are a shooter with zero experience in rifles and peep sights? I can't imagine how you'd not know within 20 seconds of putzing with the ladder sight that it pops up, and that it has a peep that can be raised really high. In practice it would have taken NOTHING to flip it up and shoot through the peep with the sights as low as they can go. You could have ignored all the extra stuff and just used the peep.
Third, once you realized something was very wrong, why didn't youswitch to shooting at a makeshift target (open patch of sand) at 25 yards or so away, inform your spotter, and get feedback from there as far as where you were hitting...then take that info and apply it to the 100 yard target.
On the show, did you use a 1903 or a 1903-A3? Rear sights are going to be the easiest way to tell.
second, once you realized crap was hitting the fan (you had no idea where you were hitting) did you communicate with your spotter? Like tell him you were attempting to shoot 15 feet in front of the target so he knew were to watch for impact?
If you were trying to prove something here, you didnt do it. Where is the target for proof? I still cant believe you couldnt hit that 10 inch target at 100 yards haha. Also when 'voting' you barely hit the target, everyone was like did he hit it? i cant tell. Boy did i laugh my ass off.
Unfamiliar rifle + poor spotting = a bad day at the range. My first thought was negative until I found Mr. Seeklanders site and read his credentials. No doubt that he is at least in the top 10% of his field, and he conducted himself with Honor. Anyone who is a shooter and practiced this craft knows full well what can happen at any given time.
Mike I’d love to take you up on a shooting match, not to prove a point but just to meet ya. I’m sure that I could learn from you.
Mike....watched the show....I wish it had been a pistol event and things had been the other way around.....We know you know how to shoot.......and shoot well I might add......could have been worse though.......You could have been sent home by a "sling-shot" shooting GM ;-) You'd never be able to show your face...take care
They were in what seemed to me to be decent condition. We got to shoot them in the "practice" session, but we had very little time on each gun, mainly because we were trying to rotate through all four guns. On the gun I shot, I spent about 10-15 minutes trying to get an idea of what the zero was. We never flipped up or messed with the ladder sight.
I personally LOVE the M1905 Ladder sight used on the M1903 & M1903-A1 rifles! It's absurdly accurate if you take the time to learn the leaf/ladder sight usage, and its various different range & volley capabilities!
It's capable of impressive direct-firing accuracy, and in WW1 capable of some surprisingly accurate area suppression! Still has ~4MOA windage though!
I appreciate your comments, but loath your unnecessary negativity. Why do you post that way when you hide behind your computer, but likely NEVER tell anyone these things to their face?
@Winthefight I can assure you, I would not hesitate to tell you to your ugly face. If you think I fear you, you are sadly mistaken. Fortunately, I do not live in Oklahoma. I live in Los Angeles when I am not overseas. I gaurantee you will meet me in the future at a shooting event. I will assure I come up to you and remind you who I am. If your feeling froggy, jump! You bald fat fuck!
To all, the learning curve on the Springfield M1903A1 ladder sight rifle he used on the show is steeper than the M1903A3 peep sight Mike used here. No doubt they didn't give him any instruction on it. I owned the former and prefer the latter for that reason, peep sights are great and set back like it is gives you a longer sight radius. I still miss my Springfield though I have plenty of other more modern rifles.
Good shooting Mike. I had you in the finals for sure on the show. I am sure there are lessons learned from the experience that will make you a better competitor and shooter. See you on the range.
Everybody has good and bad days at the range, extremely bad to have it while on Nat. TV.On the bright side this will make me feel better when I have these kind of days...
@MrGT27 Bad days, I know I've had them. At an Area championship years back I walked in with a new gun that had been accurailed (it was way too tight) and had a jam in the first and second stage, from then on it was for the fun of it. Had one other jam that cost me 4 shots on a standards exersize, but I still scored 126 of 150 points and did not get 4 shots off. But that wasn't on National TV, but I did insult the USPSA president at that match. Should have shot the single stack gun, not the Para!
@gmcfixer62 OK I just remembered the guys name ... Dave Stanford I think was USPSA President, he had been taking pictures for Front SIght magazine and he came up behind me asking questions about me just after I shot a course (Lefty's Revenge for those with good memories) and I was rude because it was none of his business. One of my buddies came over after he walked away and said you know who that was? ....... DUH!
@Winthefight After reading your reply to my earlier post I was typing another. Don't misunderstand Dude, I'm not harping on you, I'm asking questions. I have a great deal of respect for anyone who has achived a Master's card in USPSA. I also realize a TV show is cuts and clips. If you want to get upset over the questions asked fine, its not going to have me sweating. So I'll ask again, what was said back and forth during the event with your spotter?
I love it when you ask like that. Well, the spotter and I were communicating, but honestly I wasn't getting too much feedback that I could use. They showed that pretty well on the show. He was indicating that I was high right I believe, but I think he was having as tough of time as I was. Neither of us knew where the heck I was hitting. It was a tough day, and partially because of my mistakes, as well as the fact I NEVER knew where I was hitting, so could not really adjust.
Ran out of characters. The background was green brush, and VERY hard to tell where the hits were going. (I could not see any impact). The spotting scopes we had were tough to use, but adequate if we could see a hole in the target. Since I was off target, it was tough the whole time.
@Winthefight OK thats a fair reply, I was just curious if your spotter was less than bright. Like I said I have a shooting background covering a lot of areas (but I stink bad with a shotgun!) and as a retired Platoon Sergeant I've given and recieved quite a bit of training. But life tends to be cruel so I have not competed in anything to speak of in over a decade. Thanks for the answer.
@Winthefight Don't be, I had fun. I was working up through the ranks while working two jobs (in other words I didn't devote enough time to it.) and all of a sudden I had two teenagers in the house to take care of and I have no regrets. I did shoot a bowling pin match a couple years ago for charity and I get to the range now and then.
@Winthefight I've given thought to it, but too many other priorities at the moment, besides I also have three grandkids to spoil! I do shoot some, just not weekly anymore. I may get out there again in the future thou!
@Winthefight, Mike first off since you have asked others, my name is Dave and I'm in Lubbock, Texas. My background varies quite a lot but I did shoot USPSA open and did not hold a Masters card. I haven't shot a lot over the past decade for reasons I won't go into but I will say past experience tells me there was a problem. Earlier in this thread I asked about what was said between you and the spotter during the event. I'm curious.
Hey clandestine AR15 (don't know your name either). I believe I took the lose like a man, but appreciate your comments. The gun is a different variant with different sights, but it was borrowed on short notice. In your other rude comments, once again, post away if it you prefer to do it behind a keyboard.
What am I missing in this video? I hear Mike yelling hit, but I don't see anything falling down range. It may just be the crappy resolution, but I don't think this video proves anything. He CHOKED when it mattered the most!! Sorry Mike! You are still just a cocky A-hole!
Hey __________ (you don't share your name), I was hitting an 8 inch freestanding metal plate. It was unpainted, and hard to see. I appreciate your comments, but at least you know my name. Maybe you should man up if you are going to call me a cock A-hole online and give me yours.
@Winthefight The name is Joe. I called you a cocky a-hole because I have met you and it is a true statement. I will introduce myself(again) at the Pro-Am in July. As for you hitting the plates in the video....... I will have to take your word for it. The video is bad and with all of the noise from the wind you cannot hear the steel being hit. While I have your attention, are you blaming the equipment for your poor performance?
Hi Joe. I look forward to meeting you at the Pro-Am. I would love to know when/where we met before, and what I did that was so cocky. Now that I know your name, I would be happy to answer. Hell no I am not blaming my equipment. If you had seen the statement that led to the link, you would see I videoed me shooting a borrowed 1903 as more of a sanity test. And as you can see, I hit just fine with a 1903. I don't think (but dont know) anything was wrong with the gun.
This fellow Mike got EXACTLY what he deserved on Top Shot. If he had not been so mouthy, then performed like he did (Poorly) then it wouldnt have been a big deal. Problem is he talked the talk and couldnt deliver and alot of people have problems with that.
@yootoober49 I thought he should have taken on his spotter, it was one of the two of them that failed. This guy is supposed to be a USPSA GrandMaster but failed to hit a 8" plate at 100 yards? Either his spotter threw him off the target completely or he didn't have a clue what he was doing. Either way he didn't measure up and lost, can't blame anyone but himself.
I take it this was to prove that the misses you had during Top Shots where not your fault? Well I won't be the judge there, but as you well know, when the buzzer goes off its your job to hit the target. I'm curious because the TV show doesn't tell all, how much did you and your spotter talk back and forth during that event? As far as the kid beating you in the elimination, well shooting distance against a distance shooter gave him the advantage, should have been you against the spotter.
Actually, the video was simply posted to show me shooting a 03 variant, not as any source of deflection of fault. How could missing not be my fault? Not thinking before we post, are we. If you had read my comments in relation to the video, you would have seen this. Thanks for your comments though.
