Others have disputed it was Aussie ground forces but that has never been proven. for the case of the song or actually the series/story of 5 songs to go with it, Snoopy is really anybody who fought the Red Baron and earned his respect. Who felled the Red Baron has never been conclusively determined.

the P51 Mustang was not around till late in the 2nd world war. Snoopy is actually being depicted as flying a Sopwith Camel, which is American built. Richtoffen was not shot down by a plane anyway. He was shot down by a ground based gunner.
