There's a man (an unbeliever !) in my country (France) who wrote a very interesting book to denounce the way fathers were treated as "second mothers" and not MEN anymore. He said something that really rang a bell to me as a Christian , that men today feminize themselves by prefering compromize rather than authority.
What precisely characterized Jesus was the total absence of compromize He made with God's Word. He was feared because He spoke with authority . I assume He had a deep voice .
19th century Russian writer Dostoievski said there was nothing manlier than Jesus-Christ.
How couldn't it be so since Jesus is called the New Adam ? If imperfect males are said to be God's glory (1 Corinthians 11) ,what about THE sinless MAN Jesus ? Isn't He the perfect image and glory of God ? Could God glorify Himself in a sissy ?
Jesus today is being feminized by women mainly and the image of christianity is defiled even among unbelievers.
@insultcomic: How would you know that? Are you a queer yourself or something? People who hate Mark Driscoll are jealous of his ministry. He stands up for truth when 70% of this nations is lost and confused. Listen to his sermons or better yet go to his church before you make outlandish sophomoric statements like this
This guy is a humongous douche bag who actually thinks that being macho is a virtue. How can anyone believe any of the garbage that comes out of his mouth? Just look up his views on how men should act "like men" and you will quickly realize how delusional and what a dumb ass he really is. I would love to see him in an actual debate about Christianity.
Let's remember, King David's biggest contribution to the Bible wasn't tales of war and violence - it was 150 beautifully wrought, emotionally invested poems. And that's feminine? Right.
I don't like that he equates loving Christ and proclaiming it in songs and praises as an unmanly thing ( 0:20 ) something only "chicks" do ". . .And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” John 14:21
I think the main point that he was getting at is that in culture these days the man's role has been broken and watered down.
For instance, with all this homosexuality, stay at home dad, mum takes charge of kids, dad is so self absorbed to care, computer game addicts young dudes disrespectful of women, perverts, immature and weak in mind...
it's kind of how the next generation of men are going.
I think that the politically correct, overemphasized sentimentality of the evangelical churches in modern day US has hurt the churches credibility with young men. I am pretty sure that Mark is using hyperbole to make the point that we need to embrace risk taking, young, brash men who can shape the church...much like Jesus did when he chose his disciples.
I think he has somewhat of a point. Somewhat. But both extremes are bad. There is a difference between godly, biblical masculinity and what our world and culture says masculinity is.
what the fuck is his problem...and for the record, historians say that Paul was actually probably a balding, stuttering wimp that nobody would have respected.
@cyborg0578 I was responding to the comment "even the christians that post on this video are content with being boys", completely within context. I stand by my assertion that it was a dangerous false dichotomy. As for what you say here, however, I agree!
@cyborg0578 This is precisely one of the damaging false dichotomies presented in this video. Who said anything about our being content with being boys? Do you know me? I serve God by running a mentoring program for underprivileged boys, volunteer weekly at a homeless shelter, and more. But I absolutely do NOT identify with this video. I am also in a committed relationship with a wonderful, active, working woman (in church ministry), and I happen to love the "feminine" music he blasts here, too.
@Memerylane You don't relate because he isn't speaking about you, he is speaking to you. You missed his point. When he says "men" it can be interpreted broad or narrow based on the context. Driscoll is speaking in generalities and, if you have served in the church long enough, you will understand the trend that he is addressing. As a worship leader I can attest that many men comment on the lack of masculinity to much of what churches are doing in their weekend services these days.
@cyborg0578 "They see us as push overs." On what basis or statistics do you make this statement? You are lacking evidence. If anything, people view the church as oppressive in many ways: homophobic violence in Africa; obstinate, intrusive views on abortion; backward, unproductive imposition of young-earth creationism; and more. It's time for us to be meek and humble, as Jesus was and COMMANDED us to be. It's time for us to care for more widows and orphans, and those marginalized by society.
wow mark you are a deceiver you dont hear what you say dude JESUS never beat no body he love every boby he was gentle and humble hard so that makes him what a real man is like jesus not like you you think you are bad boy why you are a pastor and not in jail
What he is saying is the people who could make active powerful change within the church to promote it and bring it forward into the future are all pulled away by culture, if you see more on what he says hes not being an 'ass', hes actually making a very good point. The church is full of effeminate "beta" males. Jesus didnt have to be forceful or slaughtering people because he's God, how can you be more "alpha" than the Alpha and Omega? XD
@reallycoolman2003 so what should we do with all of these "effeminate 'beta' males"? "Jesus didnt have to be forceful or slaughtering people because he's God,"- this is a concerning interpretation of the gospel of Jesus Christ
Sorry to break the news that the bible is a fiction book of ridiculous stories thought up by a cult of primitive nutcases and jesus is an imaginary character that is never going to return and save you. Not only do dead people not return from the dead but there is zero real evidence that he ever even existed in the first place. Religion, delusions, mental illness. Sad people are still so gullable and believe in such lies and fairy tales.
mark is a good pastor but he is proud of his back pround and he is a sinner like we all are!! this does not make him a bad bible teacher this is a matter of opinion. not doctrine Im a Contruction worker and i used to have manny guns, play hockey, hunt, kill and eats animals i used to ride street bikes and dirtbikes and dive big trucks but i sold of this after i met Jesus because in know that there is more important things than having things. Jesus is more fun than all of this!
He says the real men are at home watching football and making money. I could take it as he is saying the real men are at home investing in worldy things, not spiritual.
I'm over 'macho'. I'm sick of gender generalizations. I am over this macho chauvinistic bull poop. This man's philosphy is repulsive and reggressive .He is a good arguement for many men (and women) to stay away from church.
Oh and you’re a Real man; real metro sexual man. Dude who are fooling with the manicured nails and fake tribal necklaces? I’m sorry I can’t take this man seriously. Try adding some more Bass to your voice and might reconsider it, nawww Mark you are Fagassi yea I said it Fagassi. And for those who don’t know what means its slang for FAKE!
There is a difference between manliness in the sense of moral character and manliness in the sense of masculinity. Jesus was very manly in that he had the best moral character ever, but he was not necessarily the most masculine.
For example, he did not pursue any women, get married, have sex, etc. (which is not a bad thing, but it is not a masculine thing)
Men have been castered in todays world because men are God's glory and we live in an utterly ungodly world. But there is always a way out : through Christ ,men can learn to become men again and symbolically get rid of what is feminine in order to grow as men. They desperately need to go back to the FATHER.
I am a christian woman..and he has a point most of the church going men..come off as these quiet shy feminine afraid to even talk to women at church..it can be really hard for a single woman thats hoping to meet a man at church..I have heard this from many women even christian men that dont attend church..
are you a Christian because you used reason, logic, and evidence, which led you conclude its true? No, you are a Christian because of your environment growing up. If you were born in India you would be Hindu, Pakistan then Muslim, Ancient Greece you would believe in Zeus etc... so what makes your book story so much more possible than all the others humans have come up with. If you care about truth do unbiased research and you will see that all religions are BS
Marks one of those ..MetroSexuals. Not a hair out of place, he wears so much cologne, that you could smell him before you ever see him, and when he leaves a room the rooms smells for a 1/2 hr..
Whats even funnier...I just watched him in an interview on another video, and he claimed his congregation where all 20 something...single...split about 50% men...50% women. Mark is a liar and a hypocrite....has never worked a day in his life. (besides fleecing his flock) LOL
Mark really should have removed his "necklace" before schooling people on how "macho" he see's himself. Also...love those "manicured nails" there Mark!! LMFAO
Jesus refused to use coercive methods or methods of domination. He had all the power in world but he ended up vulnerable on a cross. Love means making urself vulnerable. "Counting others as more significant than urself" "not returning evil for evil" "going the second mile" "turning the other check" caring for the poor. To practice the discipline of submission. To submit to others and serve them. And most important to submit to the will of God. How does that fit within his definition of "manly"
does anyone else see how outrageous sexist this is. He equates what it means to be a man to destroying thing/people, to being in charge, to being dominate and asserting your control and dominance over others.
and he equates what it means to be feminine with being weak, being controlled, being emotional.
If being dominate = being a man, then by its implied that being controlled and subject to will of others is what it means to be a woman. This is complete crap and not the gospel I see
Yes, there should be more active men in the church. I agree with that.
I disagree with about everything else he says in this video, though. Show me the place where Jesus is punching and slaughtering people, and I will listen to this view. Show me how watching football or working on a truck are innovative activities. Show me where innovation is the point of the Gospel.
@Pauldjay85 He's coming as a wholly righteous judge in Revelation. This has nothing to do with how Christians are to model their character. Philippians 2.
@31stmp I've read Revelation. Christ is a righteous judge there. That has nothing to do with how Christians are to model their behavior. Philippians 2.
You think he wants to see men start killing people?
I don't know what exactly Mark Driscoll is thinking, but Jesus was not one of these squeaky-voiced nice-guys that you see in the churches today, made that way by women who completely resist virtually everything that scripture tells them to be--they've been deceived into putting up with it, as if Jesus was a pushover "nice-guy" out of love.
Jesus says: follow me, or you're worm-food. I tell you because I love you.
@Sephiroth1984 Men need to step up. That is a good message. Jesus was actually quite "nice", though, if that statement can be equated to kind, compassionate, and humble. What he was NOT is *apathetic*. That seems to be the problem that needs addressing, IMO.
My experience is that I know few and far between people who I think of as the Holy saints. Holy--set apart. Men who will be kicked OUT of churches for "stepping up" just as the Holy men were persecuted in Jesus' time and right afterward.
There ARE real, holy men out there. They are humble and in low places. They don't need what many are calling "The church," but the church needs THEM more badly than they can imagine--they are the true church.
Luke 19:27 is a parable concerning what will happen to those who reject Christ in this life. Its a warning but in no way justifies the view that Jesus is some kind of macho man.
Jesus describes Himself in Matt 11:29 as 'gentle and humble'. Only gentle and humble, you can take Jesus' yoke because anything other than gentle and humble won't bow the neck.
The last thing flesh wants is 'gentle and humble' because it means dying to self but macho is quite acceptable to the flesh.
I don't know how you're defining "macho." I'm not interested in promoting "machismo," perhaps I'd say a "man's man." But the estrogen-pumped portrayal of Jesus in churches today is fabricated.
Are you uncomfortable with a Jesus who is full of love and compassion towards people? Perhaps you think love and compassion are feminine and weak and somehow unmanly (I used to)?
There was nothing unmanly about Jesus yet he is full of love and compassion.
He is a man's man, a woman's man, a child's man and an old person's man. Thank God that He is!
Your taking the argument out of context. My statement regarding scripture is factual. Portrayals of Jesus in churches today are very weak. The Bible is a different story, he is indeed humble and gentle at heart and he is also firm and powerful. The fuzzy Mr. Nice Guy bears very little resemblance to the Jesus of the Bible.
Jesus obviously, and intentionally never killed or even struck another man, but the Bible is full of stories, pictures, and examples that are violent by nature. It seems odd that you place no value on those for the purpose of learning or doctrine. Why tear out single pages when you can throw away the book? I also find it rather... silly that you preach innovation as the point of the Gospel. Or maybe you don't, it's not easy to tell via your phrasing.
@tomatoandrew I was saying that it's *not* the point. Driscoll says here that the "innovative dudes" are at home watching football and that we need them for their businesses and babies and women. I disagree with most of the implications behind those statements. I certainly value the authority of Scripture, but I see a skewed interpretation behind this video. Driscoll is certainly doing some great things, but he doesn't get it right here.
the problem is that we all want to think of Him ONLY in that way; but, God is also righteous and Holy and He has and will pour out His righteous wrath on those who reject Him. When He does I assure you there will be some punching and slaughtering taking place.
@Memerylane Read Matthew 21:12-13, Revelation 19:11-21 if you want to see where Jesus does some punching and slaughtering. Please don't forget that Jesus is the very same God that told Joshua to kill every man, woman, child and beast in Jericho. God is love and forgiving and full of grace...
@chastjones The Matthew verses give no account of punching or slaughtering. The Revelation passage (and the book generally) do not give us much information on how we are to live as followers of Christ. We also tread dangerous ground if we use God's fully righteous judgment as a model for our behavior. Blessed are the meek. Blessed are the peacemakers. Clothe yourselves with compassion. These are our commandments. In Christ, any man can do these, and he can but doesn't need to be a macho dude.
@Memerylane With all due respect, you ask to be shown where Jesus in “punching and slaughtering” you did not ask from a scriptural position how what Jesus does relates to how we should behave. In the Mat verses is does not elaborate on how or what Hedid but it certainly infers that He did not just ask nicely. I am not saying that we as followers of Christ should be violent, not at all. Nor do I believe that is what Mark Driscoll is implying. I was simply replying to your request.
@Memerylane the images are over the top. a guys gotta identify with his masculinity. There are times a guy has got to be a guy, and in christianity, for certain circumstances, turning the other cheek is likened to being a wuss. it has to be clearly defined what turning the other cheek is because as men, we are designed to defend against attacks. if we can't do that that is emasculating. i speak from experience.got called names and I "turned the other cheek,It didn't help - it made it worse.
@bandcreator28 I want to clarify this is not to say its ok to swear at others or to punch others in the face, (usually) but a guys got to stand strong in plenty of situations, or women won't respect him, and will think hes spineless, as well as the other men that witness his inability to stand up for something that is an attack either verbally or even physically. Women might see this a little differently. They are different hence the difference.
Macho man also produces pride and confidence in something other than Jesus. Jesus taught all to follow his commandments- not just women. I like Mark Driscolls teachings but stuff like this makes me reflect upon what bile he spews
Wait a second, the innovative people are at home watching football, working on their truck? What is innovative about sitting on your ass, or fixing a truck, something that thousands of people do every day across the world?
@marcohorowitz8 Yes Jesus was the manliest man to ever walk the earth. He was a carpenter fisherman healer provider councilor and enjoyed having a drink in moderation. He was horribly beaten humiliated and crucified to save others. I doubt you could walk a step in his sandals.
@marcohorowitz8 Jesus did not have long hair. It was a shame for male jews to have long hair, only the nazarites who took the nazarite vow had long hair and Jesus was not a nazarite. It is sad that the only thing you know about Jesus is false images of the fake yuppie-hippie Jesus and not the real Yeshua (Joshua) of Scripture. THE LORD IS A MAN OF WAR (exodus 15:3).
"Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?" - 1st Corinthians 11:14
I wish we had a time-machine, this man should step in, select '15th century' and never return! He represents all that is evil about organized religion: stubborness, sexism, homophobia.... all the bad stuff, he is the orst ambassador in the world for Christianity!
Ick. This man spews this filth half a mile from my home. Talk about a vile view of women, and men as well. He epitomizes why I left the "organized church" years ago to pursue a path of spiritual growth and wholeness that is more healthy and civil.
Is there reference in the Word for anything distinguishing between more or less masculinity in believers?
Here's what the Word says.. Galatians 5:22-23 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
Driscoll, by putting created personality traits (his masculinity fetish) above faith (describing saved Christians as"church boys", "sissified") is showing his true colors, worshiping the Creation over the Creator.

What's interesting is he is elevates his personal view of masculinity above spirituality and theology. One would think Driscoll's primary concern would be with a persons "relationship with God", but instead he tries to appeal to masculinity over being a "church boy", something he disdains. He knows that if he can get strong men, it will help "grow" his church...

Is this just an instance of his niche marketing?
@BeauJames59 Proper theology and practice results in a masculine man. That is why true Christian men will expose and correct theological, philosophical and societal errors which result in the emasculinization of men. We are in an era of darkess, the Kirk and the women of the Kirk do not need sissy boys who are too scared to stand up for their beliefs and are worried about offending the world because they seek the praise of men and not God.
@WorshipInTruth Therefore, by elevating his view of masculinity, which seems pretty suspicious, what he is doing is raising his view of culture above a person's spirituality. How could this NOT be heresy? You can clearly see him worship masculinity in other videos as he judges his brothers in Christ as "sissies", "church boys" as he exalts the creation, masculine men.
@WorshipInTruth Exorting is one thing. He continually demonstrates his preference for masculinity above spirituality, that is clearly heresy. Not to mention strange....
@BeauJame Nope, never did that. Masculinity is merely a trait of Christian "spirituality". What you are saying is about the equivalent of saying that Paul demonstrated a preference of grace over "sprituality" or that Iesus himself demonstrated a preference of mercy or salvation or any other concept above "spirituality". It just doesn't make any sense. You are literally babbling nonsense. Why don't you try actually reading Scripture instead of getting caught up in your own idea of "spirituality".
@BeauJames59 Laugh, once again you have no idea what you are talking about. The problem here seems to be that in your own head there is a conflict between masculinity and "spirituality". Probably because most of the "spiritual" people you come across are arch-sissies and all the macho-men are unsaved sports obsesse heathens. The whole point that Driscoll is making here is that it shouldn't be that way and that is not how it was in the first century Church as demonstrated by Scripture.
@BeauJames59 I enjoy watching masculinity [and femininity among females] in practice BECAUSE I love the Gospel truth. Like I said, it is only in your shallow mind that it has to be one or the other.
@WorshipInTruth Thanks for personally insulting me based on your misunderstanding of what I said. That's God's love in action! Spirituality- does the person accept Jesus as their personal savior? Yes or no? Mark Driscoll finds it more important that a man is masculine, whether or not he believes in Jesus. He EXPLICITLY makes fun of believers, by using "chick-i-fied" or terms like that.
@BeauJames59 What did Driscoll say that made you think he believes being manly is more important than faith in the risen Christ?? Manliness, fortitude and a whole plethora of virtues are merely some of the attributes of a born again believer.
@BeauJames59 Is he "making fun" of these sissified "male" Christians?? Certainly, but they do need correction, it has gotten to the point of ridiculousness, the Kirk needs real men, the effemininity of modern "Christians" is the reason Christianity is now in the gutter. Just because terms like "chick-i-fied" offend your modern heavily indoctrinated politcally correct sensibilities doesn't mean that the message is wrong. You are offended because it is ppl like you who he is talking about.
I'm tired of Mark Driscoll implying women are weak or wussies because of our femininity. Women are strong, courageous, warriors of valor. In fact, in Proverbs 31:10 the word commonly translated as 'virtuous' in "a virtuous woman who can find?" really means valiant, valour, strength, might--The same word used in Judges 6:12 where it is translated "mighty warrior."
a good example of authentic manliness can be found in the book of Ruth. Boaz is exemplary of biblical masculinity: He protects and esteems women, he does not exploit poor women, he is committed to holiness and lives in humility with a reverence for God. Nowhere can you find him being aggressive to prove his masculinity.
"if you don't get the young men, you get nothing" - ?? wow. as a single young woman, i can't help but find that offensive. i like some of what Driscoll says, and even parts of this video made some sense, but what is he talking about here?
and what's up with those intermingled bizarro photographs? does loving Jesus = being a testosterone-pumping body builder? weird.
He doesn't like anything feminine. Lots of Christian guys are hyper masculine or in that they don't have a balance between masculine and feminine. They believe having emotions is cowardly. What irks me is they equate feminine with cowardly.Atleast this happened at our church.
His comments are way out of line. A talented communicator, but a bit on the arrogant side and just a tad judgemental of others. I would expect this attitude from some twenty year old in the gym, not a man of God.
mark driscoll is such a bro...and mars hill a bro fest...
is there anyone in seattle that does not like driscoll...they are hard to find- it's difficult to even find solid churches out here that aren't so conservative- they are either crazy liberal or crazy conservative...
Everyone (men and women) had a good deal of "toughness" in the bible. Women have slaughtered men (here and there in the Bible). Everyone was kind of rough and dirty, because of that time period and culture. The heart is what really matter and the actions will follow.
How amusing. Religion is problematic because the men do the Christlike "meek" thing.
I guess I was just raised to think that once you, you know, grew up, you set aside your childish "dude" activities and started taking care of a family, and being sensitive and caring. Kind of the way Jesus was.
I regret that people seem to take this guy seriously. I hope people figure him out soon.
@Perykvaal This is his second strike in my book and Mark Driscoll is about to be out. I don't even know if I want to listen to another one of his sermons.
@Perykvaal He poorly answered a question during a question and answer session. The question was something like this, "Is it OK for a man to stay home and take care of the children while the wife worked and is it OK for both parents to work." Men can't handle kids and women can't handle work was the jist of it. The second part of the question went unanswered.
I think he has a point here. I mean, clearly he's not saying to go out and pick a fight if you're a Christian man, but I think that a certain level of toughness is definitely a Godly characteristic for men. Especially when it comes to your speech and honesty. It's also a good thing to not be fearful of what might happen to you because of your proclamation of truth. That's one thing I really respect about Driscoll, his blunt, unpolished honesty and guts.
Personally, I think that macho is overrated, and that "Pastor" Driscoll and others like him should reevaluate manhood, and stop trying to turn back the clock and have men be steroid-filled, alcohol fueled, knuckle dragging sexist morons. Yes, man should be the "head" of the family, but he should also help out with the housework and parenting.
if you want to know what a real man is study the book of John and see how Jesus acted and what he did....a real man isn't just about conquering...but also about using His strength for the good of those who are weaker....Jesus showed this with the woman caught in adultery. Jesus cried with Lazarus' sisters....He humbled himself and obeyed his mom when he turned the water into wine...so I'm not buying this guys hyper macho nonsense...
@osocali1, where di Mr Driscoll say that men shouldnt use their strength for the good of the weaker? Matter a fact, i think that was exactly his point, strong men should be working hard and fighting for whats right and to protect the innocent etc. I don't understand why ppl think in order to do right you have to be a pansy? When I'm in need, I want someoen strong standing with me, all the good intentions of a weak-minded little sweety-pie dont compare to the actions of a strong Christian man!
@Conail23 This guys isn't representing the heart of God...God doesn't put people down like this guy does...God covers weakness He encourages He lovingly corrects...can you honestly see the Father talking about His children like this guy does...if you do you need to get closer to the Father and see things from His perspective. and whats this mockng of singing love song to Jesus...this is so off the wall...I have a friend who is an ex-hells angel and heroin addict
@osocali777 True. Father Heart of God needs to be revealed to this fatherless world. He ain't showing it. It shows a scaring father you don't want to be around and never feel good enough.
@osocali777 Thanks for speaking up like a true Christian. Mark definitely has some issues. I couldn't ever imagine God being the way he describes him. That's not how God is at all. I think Mark is projecting his own ego and insecurities onto God.
@Conail23 I apologize to any of you that don't know the Father because this guy isn't representing His heart of character this isn't what the Father is like at all or any of the Christians I know or grew up around...Jesus is a total man but he doesn't flaunt it He said "I am gentle and humble in heart"...He also said "If you have seen me you have seen the Father" my friend if this is how you see the Father read the book of John and ask the the Holy Spirit to show you what the Father is like
mark driscoll - you have no cock. all you have is a shriveled up ballsack. i hope while ur so busy watching your own youtube videos while ur not banging your preacher wife, u stumble upon this comment and your ego goes down a couple notches. cause u suck and are so dumb.
My take away from this... Jesus doesn't want men to stop doing guy stuff when they get saved. Stop the sin but continue with the crowd...being salt n light and a city on hill, lest you become ingrown in the church and preach to the choir the rest of your life. The was tongue in cheek with a very valid point.
No "buddy Jesus" for me thank you! I want the Jesus of the of Matthew 23, John and Revelation. Seriously, have you ever tried to have a discussion with any married man in the Church today? I tried but their wives' leash keeps choking them and keeps them from speaking! Moses would have never made it today.
Mark you missed the boat on this one. A man takes care of his responsibilities. I don't care if he is Mr. Rogers or Rambo. If he is not Loving God and providing for his family there is a problem. I ca think of several men who are tough as hell and make lots of money, who do not have the strengh of character to remain faithful to there spouse.
Mark has a point. But it's because men handed the Church over to the women. The husbands discuss the Bible alot differently than when their wives are around as well. It's funny, the women in the clubs want Conan and the women in the Chuches want Mr. Rogers and they both better come with a thick wallet. Of course, if you aren't fighting or having sex, it's not a relationship anymore.
theirs fags that look like this dude, in case you didn't know it Arnold shwartzinagor use to pose for a fag magazine, man! this drisco dude is nothing but a macho mama,
discredit the message?? what message?? thiers nothing biblicle about this,
and measure up to what?? this mama's personal opinions, I wouldn't waste my time and money to meet his qualifications. you DIGG??

Let's remember, King David's biggest contribution to the Bible wasn't tales of war and violence - it was 150 beautifully wrought, emotionally invested poems. And that's feminine? Right.

I don't like that he equates loving Christ and proclaiming it in songs and praises as an unmanly thing ( 0:20 ) something only "chicks" do ". . .And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” John 14:21
magicmanofsteel2000 4 months ago
Remember this is an excerpt.
His point is GROW UP, READ UP AND BE A REAL MAN.
The way God created man.

@cyborg0578 I was responding to the comment "even the christians that post on this video are content with being boys", completely within context. I stand by my assertion that it was a dangerous false dichotomy. As for what you say here, however, I agree!
Memerylane 6 months ago
@cyborg0578 This is precisely one of the damaging false dichotomies presented in this video. Who said anything about our being content with being boys? Do you know me? I serve God by running a mentoring program for underprivileged boys, volunteer weekly at a homeless shelter, and more. But I absolutely do NOT identify with this video. I am also in a committed relationship with a wonderful, active, working woman (in church ministry), and I happen to love the "feminine" music he blasts here, too.
Memerylane 6 months ago
@Memerylane You don't relate because he isn't speaking about you, he is speaking to you. You missed his point. When he says "men" it can be interpreted broad or narrow based on the context. Driscoll is speaking in generalities and, if you have served in the church long enough, you will understand the trend that he is addressing. As a worship leader I can attest that many men comment on the lack of masculinity to much of what churches are doing in their weekend services these days.
graceofannarbor 3 months ago
@graceofannarbor His point then, if it's what you describe, is inherently subjective. Your response also does not address my concern with the video.
Memerylane 3 months ago
@cyborg0578 I've read and watched enough by Mark Driscoll to know exactly what he means when he makes statements like the ones in this video.
Memerylane 6 months ago
@cyborg0578 "They see us as push overs." On what basis or statistics do you make this statement? You are lacking evidence. If anything, people view the church as oppressive in many ways: homophobic violence in Africa; obstinate, intrusive views on abortion; backward, unproductive imposition of young-earth creationism; and more. It's time for us to be meek and humble, as Jesus was and COMMANDED us to be. It's time for us to care for more widows and orphans, and those marginalized by society.

How does that fit within his definition of "manly"
thickhead11 11 months ago
does anyone else see how outrageous sexist this is.

How about this: Luke 19:27 But bring those enemies of mine who didn't want me to reign over them here, and kill them before me.'"
Yup. Jesus is going to kill like you've never seen or heard of.
Sephiroth1984 10 months ago
@Sephiroth1984 Yeah... that has very little to do with what Mark Driscoll is advocating here.
Memerylane 10 months ago
@Memerylane
Sephiroth1984 10 months ago
@Sephiroth1984 Men need to step up. That is a good message. Jesus was actually quite "nice", though, if that statement can be equated to kind, compassionate, and humble. What he was NOT is *apathetic*. That seems to be the problem that needs addressing, IMO.
Memerylane 10 months ago
@Memerylane
Sephiroth1984 10 months ago
@Sephiroth1984
The last thing flesh wants is 'gentle and humble' because it means dying to self but macho is quite acceptable to the flesh.
tommymech 9 months ago
@tommymech
I don't know how you're defining "macho." I'm not interested in promoting "machismo," perhaps I'd say a "man's man." But the estrogen-pumped portrayal of Jesus in churches today is fabricated.
Sephiroth1984 9 months ago
@Sephiroth1984
So a man's man is someone who is going ".....to kill like you've never seen or heard of."?
Haven't you ever read Luke 9:55-56?
Are you uncomfortable with a Jesus who is full of love and compassion towards people? Perhaps you think love and compassion are feminine and weak and somehow unmanly (I used to)?
There was nothing unmanly about Jesus yet he is full of love and compassion.
He is a man's man, a woman's man, a child's man and an old person's man. Thank God that He is!
tommymech 9 months ago
@tommymech
Sephiroth1984 9 months ago
@Memerylane
Or maybe you don't, it's not easy to tell via your phrasing.
tomatoandrew 8 months ago
@tomatoandrew I was saying that it's *not* the point. Driscoll says here that the "innovative dudes" are at home watching football and that we need them for their businesses and babies and women. I disagree with most of the implications behind those statements. I certainly value the authority of Scripture, but I see a skewed interpretation behind this video. Driscoll is certainly doing some great things, but he doesn't get it right here.
Memerylane 7 months ago
the problem is that we all want to think of Him ONLY in that way; but, God is also righteous and Holy and He has and will pour out His righteous wrath on those who reject Him. When He does I assure you there will be some punching and slaughtering taking place.
chastjones 7 months ago
@Memerylane Read Matthew 21:12-13, Revelation 19:11-21 if you want to see where Jesus does some punching and slaughtering. Please don't forget that Jesus is the very same God that told Joshua to kill every man, woman, child and beast in Jericho. God is love and forgiving and full of grace...
chastjones 7 months ago
@chastjones The Matthew verses give no account of punching or slaughtering. The Revelation passage (and the book generally) do not give us much information on how we are to live as followers of Christ. We also tread dangerous ground if we use God's fully righteous judgment as a model for our behavior. Blessed are the meek. Blessed are the peacemakers. Clothe yourselves with compassion. These are our commandments. In Christ, any man can do these, and he can but doesn't need to be a macho dude.
Memerylane 7 months ago 2
@Memerylane With all due respect, you ask to be shown where Jesus in “punching and slaughtering” you did not ask from a scriptural position how what Jesus does relates to how we should behave. In the Mat verses is does not elaborate on how or what Hedid but it certainly infers that He did not just ask nicely. I am not saying that we as followers of Christ should be violent, not at all. Nor do I believe that is what Mark Driscoll is implying. I was simply replying to your request.
chastjones 7 months ago
@chastjones Understood. And either way, aside from that point, there is still much to be concerned about with this video.
Memerylane 7 months ago
@Memerylane the images are over the top. a guys gotta identify with his masculinity. There are times a guy has got to be a guy, and in christianity, for certain circumstances, turning the other cheek is likened to being a wuss. it has to be clearly defined what turning the other cheek is because as men, we are designed to defend against attacks. if we can't do that that is emasculating. i speak from experience.got called names and I "turned the other cheek,It didn't help - it made it worse.
bandcreator28 7 months ago
@bandcreator28 I want to clarify this is not to say its ok to swear at others or to punch others in the face, (usually) but a guys got to stand strong in plenty of situations, or women won't respect him, and will think hes spineless, as well as the other men that witness his inability to stand up for something that is an attack either verbally or even physically. Women might see this a little differently. They are different hence the difference.

@marcohorowitz8 Jesus did not have long hair. It was a shame for male jews to have long hair, only the nazarites who took the nazarite vow had long hair and Jesus was not a nazarite. What's interesting is he is elevates his personal view of masculinity above spirituality and theology. BeauJames59 1 year ago
WorshipInTruth 1 year ago
@WorshipInTruth Therefore, by elevating his view of masculinity, which seems pretty suspicious, what he is doing is raising his view of culture above a person's spirituality. How could this NOT be heresy? You can clearly see him worship masculinity in other videos as he judges his brothers in Christ as "sissies", "church boys" as he exalts the creation, masculine men.
BeauJames59 1 year ago
@BeauJames59
Laugh, so because he exorts his brothers in Christ to be masculine he is "worshipping masculinity". You are off your rocker friend.
WorshipInTruth 1 year ago
@WorshipInTruth Exorting is one thing. He continually demonstrates his preference for masculinity above spirituality, that is clearly heresy. Not to mention strange....
BeauJames59 1 year ago
@BeauJame Nope, never did that. Masculinity is merely a trait of Christian "spirituality". What you are saying is about the equivalent of saying that Paul demonstrated a preference of grace over "sprituality" or that Iesus himself demonstrated a preference of mercy or salvation or any other concept above "spirituality". It just doesn't make any sense. You are literally babbling nonsense. Why don't you try actually reading Scripture instead of getting caught up in your own idea of "spirituality".
WorshipInTruth 1 year ago
@BeauJames59 Laugh, once again you have no idea what you are talking about. The problem here seems to be that in your own head there is a conflict between masculinity and "spirituality". Probably because most of the "spiritual" people you come across are arch-sissies and all the macho-men are unsaved sports obsesse heathens. The whole point that Driscoll is making here is that it shouldn't be that way and that is not how it was in the first century Church as demonstrated by Scripture.
WorshipInTruth 1 year ago
@WorshipInTruth Apparently you share his attraction to masculine men over the Gospel Truth.....

WorshipInTruth 1 year ago
@WorshipInTruth Thanks for personally insulting me based on your misunderstanding of what I said. That's God's love in action! Spirituality- does the person accept Jesus as their personal savior? Yes or no? Mark Driscoll finds it more important that a man is masculine, whether or not he believes in Jesus. He EXPLICITLY makes fun of believers, by using "chick-i-fied" or terms like that.
BeauJames59 1 year ago
@BeauJames59 What did Driscoll say that made you think he believes being manly is more important than faith in the risen Christ?? Manliness, fortitude and a whole plethora of virtues are merely some of the attributes of a born again believer.
WorshipInTruth 1 year ago
@BeauJames59 Is he "making fun" of these sissified "male" Christians?? Certainly, but they do need correction, it has gotten to the point of ridiculousness, the Kirk needs real men, the effemininity of modern "Christians" is the reason Christianity is now in the gutter. Just because terms like "chick-i-fied" offend your modern heavily indoctrinated politcally correct sensibilities doesn't mean that the message is wrong.

Nowhere can you find him being aggressive to prove his masculinity.

a real man has the balls to stand up for what he believes in
Mrjayceedee 1 year ago
He doesn't like anything feminine. Lots of Christian guys are hyper masculine or in that they don't have a balance between masculine and feminine. They believe having emotions is cowardly. What irks me is they equate feminine with cowardly.Atleast this happened at our church.
rad7610884 1 year ago
@rad7610884 I think it's because they're insecure in their own masculinity. The problem is, what they think is real masculinity really isn't.

Killing people is masculine? Talk about insecure.
I can't wait until a gay encounter scandal comes out involving this guy...

His comments are way out of line. A talented communicator, but a bit on the arrogant side and just a tad judgemental of others. I would expect this attitude from some twenty year old in the gym, not a man of God.

mark driscoll is such a bro...and mars hill a bro fest...
is there anyone in seattle that does not like driscoll...they are hard to find- it's difficult to even find solid churches out here that aren't so conservative- they are either crazy liberal or crazy conservative...
i could/would date a guy from mars hill

Everyone (men and women) had a good deal of "toughness" in the bible. Women have slaughtered men (here and there in the Bible). Everyone was kind of rough and dirty, because of that time period and culture. The heart is what really matter and the actions will follow.

I really can't begin to decide: if he's a bigger lunatic, or a bigger asshole. There's a blending of both I guess.
abbeyism 1 year ago
How amusing. Religion is problematic because the men do the Christlike "meek" thing.
I guess I was just raised to think that once you, you know, grew up, you set aside your childish "dude" activities and started taking care of a family, and being sensitive and caring. Kind of the way Jesus was.
I regret that people seem to take this guy seriously. I hope people figure him out soon.

@Perykvaal This is his second strike in my book and Mark Driscoll is about to be out. I don't even know if I want to listen to another one of his sermons.

@sequyas can I ask what "Strike One" was?

@Perykvaal He poorly answered a question during a question and answer session. The question was something like this, "Is it OK for a man to stay home and take care of the children while the wife worked and is it OK for both parents to work." Men can't handle kids and women can't handle work was the jist of it. The second part of the question went unanswered.
sequyas 1 year ago
I think he has a point here. I mean, clearly he's not saying to go out and pick a fight if you're a Christian man, but I think that a certain level of toughness is definitely a Godly characteristic for men. Especially when it comes to your speech and honesty. It's also a good thing to not be fearful of what might happen to you because of your proclamation of truth. That's one thing I really respect about Driscoll, his blunt, unpolished honesty and guts.
TheRecluse26 1 year ago
Personally, I think that macho is overrated, and that "Pastor" Driscoll and others like him should reevaluate manhood, and stop trying to turn back the clock and have men be steroid-filled, alcohol fueled, knuckle dragging sexist morons. Yes, man should be the "head" of the family, but he should also help out with the housework and parenting.

if you want to know what a real man is study the book of John and see how Jesus acted and what he did....a real man isn't just about conquering...but also about using His strength for the good of those who are weaker....Jesus showed this with the woman caught in adultery. Jesus cried with Lazarus' sisters....He humbled himself and obeyed his mom when he turned the water into wine...so I'm not buying this guys hyper macho nonsense...
osocali1 1 year ago
@osocali1, where di Mr Driscoll say that men shouldnt use their strength for the good of the weaker? Matter a fact, i think that was exactly his point, strong men should be working hard and fighting for whats right and to protect the innocent etc. I don't understand why ppl think in order to do right you have to be a pansy? When I'm in need, I want someoen strong standing with me, all the good intentions of a weak-minded little sweety-pie dont compare to the actions of a strong Christian man!

@Conail23 This guys isn't representing the heart of God...God doesn't put people down like this guy does...God covers weakness He encourages He lovingly corrects...can you honestly see the Father talking about His children like this guy does...if you do you need to get closer to the Father and see things from His perspective. and whats this mockng of singing love song to Jesus...this is so off the wall...I have a friend who is an ex-hells angel and heroin addict
osocali777 1 year ago 2
@osocali777 True. Father Heart of God needs to be revealed to this fatherless world. He ain't showing it. It shows a scaring father you don't want to be around and never feel good enough.
neary1982 1 year ago
@osocali777 Thanks for speaking up like a true Christian. Mark definitely has some issues. I couldn't ever imagine God being the way he describes him. That's not how God is at all. I think Mark is projecting his own ego and insecurities onto God.
auntstacey123 5 months ago
@Conail23 I apologize to any of you that don't know the Father because this guy isn't representing His heart of character this isn't what the Father is like at all or any of the Christians I know or grew up around...Jesus is a total man but he doesn't flaunt it He said "I am gentle and humble in heart"...He also said "If you have seen me you have seen the Father" my friend if this is how you see the Father read the book of John and ask the the Holy Spirit to show you what the Father is like

mark driscoll - you have no cock. all you have is a shriveled up ballsack. i hope while ur so busy watching your own youtube videos while ur not banging your preacher wife, u stumble upon this comment and your ego goes down a couple notches. cause u suck and are so dumb.
luckytwentyseven 1 year ago
My take away from this... Jesus doesn't want men to stop doing guy stuff when they get saved. Stop the sin but continue with the crowd...being salt n light and a city on hill, lest you become ingrown in the church and preach to the choir the rest of your life. The was tongue in cheek with a very valid point.

He is literally insane. I don't even want to produce and argument against Mark. He is quite literally laughable.

MrNickKane 1 year ago
Mark you missed the boat on this one. A man takes care of his responsibilities. I don't care if he is Mr. Rogers or Rambo. If he is not Loving God and providing for his family there is a problem. I ca think of several men who are tough as hell and make lots of money, who do not have the strengh of character to remain faithful to there spouse.
JEBMAMA 1 year ago
Mark has a point. But it's because men handed the Church over to the women. The husbands discuss the Bible alot differently than when their wives are around as well. It's funny, the women in the clubs want Conan and the women in the Chuches want Mr. Rogers and they both better come with a thick wallet. Of course, if you aren't fighting or having sex, it's not a relationship anymore.
