  • Can't help but think of the quote from Amadeus: "You mean THESE....are ORIGINALS?"

  • super, nichts verlernt

  • Ruth made more than 3 mistakes, she made about 5. I've listened to the songs so many times that I could hear the most subtle flaws. I don't know if she counts slowing down at points a mistake, but I do.

  • @LuneyTune72 I hope you're better than her. :|

  • @CBurton Never, I could not match this woman. I just hear the wrong notes because I listen to this song a couple of times every day. Ruth is a god at her instrument. She said that she hasn't played this song in thirty years...I'm still impressed.

  • @LuneyTune72 ok

  • Ruthie had on a thin night gown

She wasn't feelin' very well, no no no no

She pushed her tray out the door

Some guy tried to come in

She kicked him in the nuts,

He said, "Oh, oh, oh, oh!"

  • She was awesome on that marimba

  • 0:49 - THE IDIOT BASTARD SON!

    Terrific!!

  • this is interesting

  • does anyone else notice kenny powers on the marimba?

  • that was Napoleon, yes?

  • FUCKING AMAZING

  • i wish i could change my name to Ruth Ruth.

  • That is great, Dweezils guitar part is equally as great. Try playing it.....

  • @G7flat5 Given Dweezil was suffering from cramp/over stretching in his fretting hand, I'd wage a bet that very few people could successfully play that part on guitar.

  • id still eat Ruth.

  • Great vid. Too bad it ends just as I was about to get on my feet and do the Funky Alfonzo.

  • Totally agree..

  • Genius at play!!!

  • Moraisito ametista - the best

  • Definitely one of the most beautiful melodies Frank came up with.

  • Genius

  • I NEED to save this, share it, remind myself to learn it and use it in my extremely primitive Apple GarageBand rock guitar (aka "guitarbage" outings). I revere Frank and I love Ruth.

  • What Mistake? Before Evelyn Glennie was Ruth Underwood!

  • Frank Zappa was, and still is the BEST !

  • THE IDIIIOTTT BAAAASTARD SOOON

  • oh I see the theory. with the 2 chords the 3rd and 5th's are implied by the listener. so it can be major, minor, or suspended.

  • Gosh.. I WISH I had the sheet music for that...

  • I love Zappa music, but after just listening to Ruth explain the music I realize that as great as I thought Zappa's compositions were/are, I still didn't properly scope the true grandeur and majesty of his writing, until now (I' like to think). I miss Frank Zappa. He was a giant among giants and no matter what anyone says good, it still is not enough and it still is an understatement. Music is the best and Zappa music is the the best music and neckties are still neck ornaments.

  • @grubbetuchus Agreed, grubby; a genius among genuii still doesn't quite do it.

  • Great video!! loved her playing so amazing!! enjoyed listening to her so much see him live!!

  • Her playing was second to none and she seems so humble. Thanks for posting.

  • Thank you Ruth, you're so kind, I've just saved a lot of time about getting the right notes for playing rollo

@PurplePlayer99: Some F. Zappa pieces are into the real books, also S. Vai has edited a guitar book, and there is a song book... I use to make my own scores for playing FZ in bands, zappa musicians are so accurate that it's relatively easy to transcribe but a knowledge of asymmetric rythms is needed

  • Anyone know where you could get his scores ;-;. Wish he had a songbook like Pat Metheny or the Real/fake book. He sure as hell deserves his own.

  • Zappa was the Man

  • why the hell is she away from music?

  • @wtret

She settled down and raised a family; Imagine having Ruth Underwood as your mother! (I just realized there is a pun in there).

  • Love Ruth ..simply the best.................

  • She is most likely one of the best marimba/xylophone/vibraphone players in America. Before Evelyn Glennie there was Ruth Underwood.

  • Ruth is so awesome!

  • Ruth is a living legend! It sucks that the youth never heard of her. she should be on 60 Minutes

  • Who's the singer? Is that Ricky Lancelotti?

  • it's Napolean Murphy Brock

  • @jimmybeam5445

Lancelotti died LONG ago. He was fired from the '73 tour because he was injured in an accident while high on drugs, and had since overdosed.

  • @5jerry1 P.S. I don't think he ever worked with him after that.

  • The Idiot Bastard Son! 0:59

    genius, I Love Ruth!

  • Frank demanded perfection and only hired perfectionists...what would you expect?

  • what 3 mistakes? i heard 1 hesitation!! fz had an eye for talent-that's fo sho!!

  • i used to earn this istrument....it sounds so amazing!

  • which she plays with amazing ease, forgot to say...

  • What I love most about Ruth is her shy smile after playing an incredibly difficult lick, like Rollo Interior... just check out all the vids available where she plays.

  • No body makes the Beatles look stupid.

Posters that make stupid posts look stupid.

However, Ruth is wonderful as always and she plays the required parts so wonderfully that no body has ever replaced her.

Even Z plays Z has to go to the tapes of her and call it sampling.

And after 30 yrs she knows her 3 mistakes on Rollo Interior

That is Ruth of the Conservatory.

  • The Beatles have been my favorite band my entire life. Frank Zappa makes their stuff look like chlld's play

  • Don't just look at the technical side.

    Zappa couldn't be a Beatle.

The Beatles produced sincere cool stuff.

Like the Beatles, Zappa is real and not like the fake crap of today.

Back then the artist really had most of the control and not M FUCKING TV.

  • Ruth is amazing. It´s also fantastic how Dweezil has mastered his dad´s compositions. Such talent and dedication.

  • doesnt this make the beetles look stupid

  • The Beatles?? FZ and the Beatles, the comparison is very similar to David & Goliath! :0)

  • Yes exactly... everyone "thinks" goliath is better. Frank is a scientist in musical terms.

  • It's true . . . but the Beatles are still a fun pop group even if they can't compete with Frank . . . George Martin is somewhat of an unsung genius though, gotta admit at the least.

  • unsung genius? must have missed beetlemania then?

  • He's totally eclipsed by the songwriting team though when their success is equally do to his touch. I guess unsung isn't the word but "less-sung" maybe, lol . . . but yeah of course I fucking missed Beatlemania, I'm fucking 18 years old, it ended like 21 years before I was even born.

  • no.

  • You can say..Real Oblique Music

  • wow holy shit is that chick the lady wh played the xylophone part on saint alfonzs pancake breakfast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The one and only.

  • On Ruth On Ruth

    That's Ruth!

  • @tomtiddler CHESTER'S THING!

  • @tomtiddler LOL. Inca Road ending breath.

  • is this from some kind of wonderful documentary?

  • I have the DVD. It's a docu on Apostrophe and Overnight Sensation, with lots of interviews with band members and some really cool rare footage of the early days.

  • In the "Classic Albums" dvd collection

  • (sniff)....live music is dead.

    Zappa lives!

  • to anybody wondering, i just transcribed this today! if anybody wants a copy, feel free to contact me

  • does anyone have any idea how difficult that section is on guitar?!?!

  • It´s hard. I´m torturung a couple of my guitar students with this. Great piece of music :-)

  • Have to say, Dweezil is doing a good job there.

  • @IncaRoad01 Yea the whole band is

  • anyone know where i can get sheet music for rollo?

  • The whole Apostrophy album is available as sheet music. It also has guitar tabs under the standard notation. I personally prefer to ignore the tabs & work out the fingerings for myself.

    Cheers :-)

  • This is such an insane piece of music. That fact that Ruthy can still even approach it after all these years is a testament to how good she is. The version on the ZPZ DVD is ridiculous, especially Dweezil.

  • ruthy ruthy!

  • I love you Ruth. Thank you for showing the manuscript and letting people know just how brilliant FZ was. I hope to hear you play more soon!

  • I guess I should have taken the Goldenberg book more seriously! Ruth, you stll rock!!

  • Oh my God!

I weep for where the music once was, and even more for where it is today.

Thank you, Ruth. You are a genius.

  • in cre ible

  • Holy shyt!

  • I love Ruth for having played this.

I want to be able to cover this before I croak.

    ~sigh~.

    (('L')) o

  • I gave it a crack on guitar a while. It was insanely hard but i got a fair bit into it before i ran out of steam
