  • great player, great piece, but i wish there was a good recording of him with a professional orchestra! i need a solid role model for solo & ensemble...

  • watch?v=eQqOPDoSbqU clarinet Slap teknique

  • I want that awesome clarinet! Say... How much d'ya reckon custom made replicas cost? (probably not in my $200 budget)

  • I WANNA SCREW THAT GUY HES SOOOOOO SEXY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I am gonna do the calrinet next year XD i am so excited!

  • I am gonna do the calrinet next year XD i am so excited! this reminds me of sqwidward

  • Not only he plays it too slow and without energy, but also he eludes the toughest part of it at 0:08 ...

  • It is a clarinet! It's a Basset clarinet in the key of A. The clarinet concerto is written in A.

  • He took some artistic license at the very end. Not the way Mozart wrote it.

  • I am in awe.... He is my musical god.

  • talented kids too dang!

  • AMAZING CLARINET, not so sure about the orchestra...

  • That doesn't look like a clarinet, what key is it in?

  • @cowgirl14zz it is a basset clarinet

  • Intonation!!! Please!

  • 0:54 sound like a little vibrato on that "B"

  • @RyaZila24 right and I kinda dislike it !

  • that cant be a b flat clarinet.. it looks so long.

  • It's actually called a basset clarinet! It is much longer and goes much lower than the regular Bb or A clarinet.

  • @ihatetilatequila it an "A" clarinet. The concerto is written in "A" Major.

  • this is not a replica just a modern basset clarinet

fine player but nothing with historicaL performance practice

    clarinet has chaged a lot!!!!!

  • where's the rest?

  • ele toca muito bem....

  • this was pretty cute, and for as young as the kids look the orchestra part wasnt too bad.

  • This is not a replica of a 1700 clarinet. This is only a modern clarinet extended as Stadler basset-clarinet. Is only a modern versión of the basset-clarinet.

  • esta muy bien pero mucho mejor martin frost que el pero continua estando bien

  • haha. Brendinha2509....

    thank you. :D

  • umm... Synh6416....

your are kind of rude towards him...

    since your sooo confident...

go put a video on here with you playing your clarinet and ill compare you two!

  • i totally agree with u volleyballroxx25 ^^

  • I'm in that!

    i'm the first trombone player.

    yay

  • i wish that girl playing violin would sit up straight

  • oh i love basset clarinet :) i wish i could get my hands on one lol.

  • Pity that he does not play the most powerfull part of 1:03-the end

  • He did, the sound is off.

  • @AlgebraicClarinet Well they had to find some orchestra to play with such an amazing clarinetist so it had to be this group. LOL but on the other hand, you can only say it's horrible if you were like 10 times better than him. That I doubt, haha.

  • My lord- he sounds great, but Synh is right... man, what a ass hat...

  • I've been in band for many years as well, and the few times that my band has invited someone to play with us (like here) it's usually because they're good friends with my band director and the band director asks them months in advance. Do you even know who this is? He's the clarinet professor at Yale AND he's incredibly famous. I'm fairly certain he doesn't NEED to play with young ensembles to "be recruited" or "gain fame." he's pretty much guaranteed amazing jobs for the rest of his career.

  • I think it's dumb that his orchestra are a bunch of kids. How lame does that make him look? He comes off more as a show off rather than a professional. 'Oooo, look at me, I play better than a bunch of 7th graders'. Big friggin' whoop. Go get a real gig

  • well, my orchestra is playing with the City Ballet Association! i consider what you said an insult to me and my orchestra i would to see you play!

  • How can it possibly be an insult when you are playing with a bunch of kids? That's not an insult, that's just a fact. And if you really want to showcase this orchestra's talent, why didn't you have one of the kids play the concerto or a different one instead of yourself? Get a life or, better yet, a real job. It's not about you, it's about the kids. Learn to take criticism. If you can't, you have no right to call yourself a musician.

  • Usually when a professional plays with a younger ensemble it's because the band/orchestra director INVITED him to play with them. And it's not like he plays the whole concert, he might do one piece at the end/in the middle of their concert. It's not like he can't get better gigs so he succumbs to playing with them.

  • David Shifrin does not need help.

  • He\w salso solo clarintwith cleveland

  • I've heard Shifrin perform live on several occasions at Yale and elsewhere and his sound is stunning. His rendition of the copland almost brought me to tears.

And you're half right, Yale's -undergrad- music program is very weak. Their graduate program is excellent. Shifrin doesn't teach undergrads.

  • Wow, do YOU need to get out more! Shifrin on a bad day still makes nearly everyone else sound 2nd tier. Your freshmen have those chops? I seriously doubt it, but I'm sure they appreciate your boosterism.

  • rofl synh ur an idiot usually when a pro comes to play for a high school band or state bands its because they truly want people to love their instruments and to inspire them to get better. Rofl pro's dont need to come, they do it for younger kids to show how great a person can become and they do it out of the kindness of their hearts.

  • you're a fool.

  • David Shifrin is a soloist constantly in demand- he has concerto gigs with professional orchestras practically every week, I'm sure this was some kind of youth outreach. How wonderful for these kids to be able to see a true professional at work.

  • @Synh6416 Dave Shifrin can definitely get a "real" gig... being that he was principal in Cleveland, has appeared as a soloist with many great orchestras, recorded the Brahms and Mozart Quintets with the Emerson String Quartet, was music director of Chamber Music Society at Lincoln, to name a few... did it ever occur to you that he was probably invited to play with this group and that he was probably invited for the benefit of the kids? I think it's admirable he would accept such a gig.

  • this is off

  • His performance is fabulous..who really cares about video technicalities. And, clarinet vibrato is as natural as voice vibrato.

  • It isn't in sync with the video!!!! Quite a delay.

  • That orchestra is so lucky to have a world-class clarinetist play.

  • The accompaniment is pretty bad, but yeah David Shifrin is amazing!! You can barely see his fingers move at those quick parts!

  • c'est un peu plus rapide normalement, non ?

    Bien poser les graves.

  • Oh oui, mais il faut bien que les "petiots" suivent...

  • His tone is the most perfect tone i have ever heard on a clarinet. Wow.

  • great recording!!! I'm doin this solo for contest... shit, I feel really bad about my skills right now....

    Im gonna go practice...

  • WOW im jeolous

  • I don't think it's right to play on period instruments. The composer only wrote for these instruments because there wasn't anything better. Mozart would have loved the better sound of a modern clarinet. (the only problem is the range)

  • As much as i wouldn't classify the basset clarinet as a "period" instrument, the only difference of range between that and the "modern" clarinet is that it goes to a low C.. its exactly the same otherwise.

Thats why you can still play this concerto on a regular clarinet, just raising the few low C's that are written.

and, i wouldn't necessarily say that mozart only wrote because there wasnt anything better, he loved the clarinet. and.. its pretty much the same, it hasnt changed much....

  • That is an erroneous statement. I suggest a better familiarization with Classical clarinets and basset clarinets, if not their contemporary counterparts as well.

  • Wow, I wish I had that instrument, it would be much better than my current clarinet.

  • I actually heard that a Selmer Signet clarinet is an intermediate clarinet, which means that compared to a buffet A paris like the one I just got, its "not a very good" clarinet! But Shifrin's horn personalized so there is no doubt. I just got an A clarinet by Buffet, and it sounds amazing! Even if you are a beginner, I would recommend a Buffet. Just don't play it with a B45 mouthpiece by Vandoren!

  • What's wrong with the B45 mouthpiece on a Buffet A clarinet?

  • Well, the B45 "dot"(the mouthpiece that has B45 label with a crossed circle) by Vandoren is the mouthpiece most frequently used by advanced clarinetists due to its rich tone. The regular Vandoren B45 has stopped being used many years ago due to sound problems. Nobody even uses it nowadays. My clarinet teacher, who owns a woodwind repair shop hasn't sold a B45 in a long time.

  • eww, i dont like that mouthpiece. its kinda for begginers. i like my M13, i get the best sound out of it.

  • Im not a fan of b45 or b45 dot either i had an M13 and i love it but my little sister broke it one day by dropping it so I got a Selmer C** (double star) and i LOVE it

  • I love playing this piece!!

  • You definitely want to use vibrato on French music like Saint-Saens or Poulenc on appropriate places.

  • Bravo for the slight vibrato. Mozart alive and well.

  • ONCE AGAIN... sorry that the sound is off. not quite sure how to fix that. :( sorry.

  • yes, it's a basset clarinet. it's the clarinet that mozart intended the k 622 concerto to be played on lol. cool huh?

  • I've seen David in concert a few times, and he is truly amazing

  • I've listened to a couple of amateur and professional clarinet players on YouTube, and this gentleman has the best tone. I like his vibrato. He plays a million times better than I do. Has anyone ever heard a clarinet solo called Clarinet Royale by David Bennet?

  • Vibrato on clarinet sucks!!

  • I disagree, I heard a Cheque(Prag) orchestra, and every now and then, there was a beautiful vibrato on the clarinet, every instrument is allowed to do so, but the clarinet was supposed to be a trumpet clarino substitute. If it sucks then your pseudonym sucks too.

  • Don't mind that Shif looks like he's about to take a dump in this video - had to chuckle just watching. The interpretation (most likely more to do with the conducting & orch than anything else) is a bit slow for my taste. At this tempo, it lacks the joyous feeling characteristic of Mozartean Rondos. Anyone know what the CC stands for?

  • corpus christi

  • i'm not too sure what kind it is. he mentioned it, but i was too much in awe of the instrument to remember. :D i just know that it is a replica made by Selmer Signet from a 1700's clarinet.

  • I can say, with certainty, that it indeed is a Basset Clarinet. Between marker 10-20, he is playing a motive towards a low C (below the lowest E), and trilling with ornamentation including a D. This would not be possible on a standard A clarinet. You can also see it in the key extensions towards the bell.

  • is that a Basset Clarinet?

  • yas

  • yes it is a basset clarinet with a backun barrel.

  • ok, so sorry but for some reason the sound and movement is off. don't know why. but, that is him really playing. it was an awesome song and he is an amazing player. thanks for listening.

  • I don't know what's up with that video. Obviously a sound track was dubbed over the musician, because the clarinet music was still playing when he breathed and put down his horn.

  • great player
